Chaangur Baba Conversions: Why Constitution Must Rethink Religious Proselytisation
If the 1981 mass conversions of Dalit Hindus in Meenakshipuram, Tamil Nadu—where as many as 300 people converted to Islam in a single day—shocked the Hindu conscience and catalysed the Ayodhya movement, the recent conversions of indigent Hindu girls to Islam by Chhangur Baba aka Jalaludin, with the ultimate aim of marrying them off to Pakistani ISI agents in return for monetary allurements, have revived the debate on proselytisation. He reportedly has a rate card offering the highest inducement of Rs 16 lakh for Brahmins, and investigation agencies have uncovered evidence of his active links with banks in Islamic nations, chiefly Saudi Arabia.

SC upholds order declaring wife owner of deceaseds land
Last Updated: New Delhi, Jul 17 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld an order declaring a deceased man's wife the rightful owner of his land and said the non disclosure of her status or the reason of her disinheritance in the will ought not be examined in isolation but in light of the case's facts. A bench of Justices Sanjay Karol and Joymalya Bagchi therefore dismissed the challenge to a Punjab and Haryana High Court order passed in November 2009, declaring the wife as the owner. The bench noted after the man died in November 1991, his nephew filed a suit by propounding a will executed by his uncle in May 1991 bequeathing the land to him. The trial court declared the May 1991 will as genuine and by its virtue, the nephew of the deceased was the lawful owner of the land. The high court subsequently overruled the decisions of trial court and the first appellate court, declaring the wife was the rightful owner of the land. Both claimants, the wife and the nephew of the deceased, died during the pendency of the case with legal representatives substituting them in the top court. Unlike other documents, the bench said, when a will is propounded, its maker is 'no longer in the land of living". The court, therefore, pointed out, 'This casts a solemn duty on the court to ascertain whether the Will propounded had been duly proved." The onus lay on the propounder not only to prove due execution but dispel from the court's mind all suspicious circumstances that cast a doubt on the free disposing mind of the testator, it added. 'What boils down from this discussion is that suspicious circumstance, i.e., non-mention of the status of wife or the reason for her disinheritance in the Will ought not to be examined in insolation but in the light of all attending circumstances of the case," the bench said. It said the nephew's case was not only to propound the will in his favour, but also to deny the status of the respondent as the deceased's wife. Calling the will 'cryptic" the bench noted that the deceased bequeathed his properties to his nephew for taking his care. 'However, the will is completely silent with regard to the existence of his own wife and natural heir, i.e., the first respondent, or the reason for her disinheritance," it added. The bench further said the trial court 'erroneously" observed that the non-performance of last rites of the deceased by his wife hinted at 'sour relations" between the couple. 'Ordinarily, in a Hindu/Sikh family, last rites are performed by male Sapinda relations. Given this practice, first respondent (wife) not performing last rites could not be treated as a contra indicator of indifferent relationship with her husband during the latter's lifetime," it held. Caught On Camera: UK Man Releases Rats Outside Sheffield Mosque, Shouts Racist Remarks
Last Updated: Edmund Fowler, 66, released rats outside Sheffield Grand Mosque in a series of hate crimes, causing shock and distress among worshippers. A UK man was seen releasing caged rats outside a mosque in a premeditated series of hate crimes described by magistrates as 'disgusting" and 'highly dehumanising" in CCTV footage played in court. In the video, Edmund Fowler, 66, was seen lifting a cage from the boot of his car and freeing the animals onto the pavement outside Sheffield Grand Mosque on four separate occasions between May and June. The video also captured Edmund Fowler shouting racist insults at worshippers entering the mosque on Grimesthorpe Road. In additional mobile phone footage recorded by Edmund Fowler himself, he is heard saying to the rats, 'Guess where you're going," 'Say bye bye," and 'I'll point you in the right direction." Edmund Fowler pleaded guilty at Sheffield Magistrates' court to four counts of racially aggravated harassment. Despite the shocking footage, he was not sent to prison but received an 18-week prison sentence and was banned from going near any mosque or certain areas of Sheffield for the same duration. The court heard that Edmund Fowler's actions had caused widespread 'upset and shock" as the manager of Sheffield Grand Mosque said in a statement, 'It is evident people using the mosque are Muslim. They are scared of further harassment and are now too scared to come to the mosque." Chair of the bench, Suzanne Irish-Deverill, said she was 'disgusted" by the footage, adding, 'Your crimes were pre-planned on multiple occasions. You also had the audacity to record it yourself. It has had significant impact and caused shock and distress. People are entitled to travel to a place of worship without being racially or religiously harassed- it is a hate crime." The court was told that Edmund Fowler may have suffered a mental breakdown linked to the stress of caring for his wife, who has breast cancer. However, no motive was provided by Edmund Fowler, who acknowledged that his behaviour was 'appalling." Iman Atta, director of the anti-hate crime charity Tell Mama, called the acts 'highly dehumanising", saying, 'This specific targeting of a mosque and the release of rats in itself is highly dehumanizing. It's not just a targeting of an institution- it's the impact it has on the congregation… a congregation feeling that this is intentional harassment that they're going through on an ongoing basis."
