Jamie Lee Curtis anchors another toxic, co-dependent family in Ella McCay trailer

Yahoo13 hours ago
To borrow a phrase from its star Jamie Lee Curtis, Ella McCay is about trauwma. Specifically, the trauma that comes with trying to rise above toxic family dynamics that keep trying to drag you back down. (This subject matter is also quite familiar to Curtis from her time on The Bear.) Emma Mackey stars as the titular young politician who—despite her very successful career—is stifled by a lot of pent-up hurt and rage that she can't let out because if she did, 'I might not be able to stop,' she says in the new trailer for the film.
The logline for the film is an incredibly basic one: 'An idealistic young woman juggles her family and work life in a comedy about the people you love and how to survive them.' It may be that simple only because if you asked director James L. Brooks, 'My logline would take about 45 minutes,' Brooks told The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year. 'I came from a family that wasn't roses and warm bread, and so I wanted it to be about one errant parent and getting over the loss of a parent. I never want to do anything that's not a comedy, and I always want to represent life.'
Ella McCay marks Brooks' first film as a director in 15 years (since 2010's How Do You Know), though he's remained plenty busy as a producer in the interim. Returning to the director's chair, he told THR, 'My favorite thing is making the shoot all about the actors as much as possible, so for me it felt good to be able to try and do that.' For his latest feature he's assembled another all-star cast, including Woody Harrelson as Ella's deadbeat dad, Jack Lowden as her irate husband, Rebecca Hall as her late mother, Kumail Nanjiani as her security guard, Spike Fearn as her brother, and Ayo Edebiri as her brother's love interest, as well as Albert Brooks and Becky Ann Baker. 'There are several people I have worked with before, so for continuity, that feels really good. Then there's Jamie Lee Curtis, whose spirit permeates and is infectious in a great way,' he shared. 'She brings a humanity, moment to moment. When the making of a picture can become snarky, Jamie is just a wall against that. Also, it helps that she has the best hug in town.' You can experience the warm embrace of Ella McCay when the film premieres December 12.

Meghan toasts to ‘beautiful day' as she launches new rose wine

The Duchess of Sussex has toasted to a 'beautiful day' to mark the launch of her latest rose wine. Meghan released her As Ever Napa Valley Rose 2024 – described as evoking the same 'soft notes of stone fruit, gentle minerality, and a lasting finish' as the 2023 rose – on Tuesday. It comes after the previous rose, launched last month, sold out within an hour. In a video posted on her Instagram, Meghan can be seen uncorking a bottle marked 'Bottle #1' in front of bouquets of pink and cream flowers – followed by close-up of the cork bearing the As Ever logo. Alongside the clip, she wrote: 'Here we go! First bottle off the line! 'Toasting to a beautiful day: Our Napa rose is live @aseverofficial.' As with the previous wine, the beverage is priced at more than £67 for a minimum three-bottle order – and only appeared to be available for US customers to buy, with shipping addresses limited to America. As Ever is Meghan's lifestyle brand which also sells cookie mix, herb tea, flower sprinkles and jams. A post on the company's Instagram show the corks branded with the As Ever logo, with a caption reading: 'C'est l'heure. 'Enjoy your last sips of summer with the newest vintage of our beloved Napa Valley rose.' The website describes the drink as 'thoughtfully curated by Meghan, Duchess of Sussex' and that it has been 'made to be enjoyed with the ones you love'. The pale pink wine, which comes in a clear bottle with a white, gold-rimmed label, has an ABV (alcohol by volume) of 13.5% – one percent lower than its predecessor. As with the 2023 rose, the newest wine is not available to buy in orders of less than three bottles. Three bottles cost 90 US dollars (around £67), six bottles cost 159 dollars (around £119) including a 12% discount, and 12 bottles are priced at 300 dollars (around £225) including a 17% discount. Meghan and the Duke of Sussex left the UK and moved to California five years ago for a new life after stepping down from the working monarchy. Napa Valley wine country is in northern California, around 50 miles from San Francisco.

Liam Neeson Hilariously Mocked Paramount Execs Into Greenlighting THE NAKED GUN Reboot — GeekTyrant

The Naked Gun reboot may be winning over fans now, but it almost didn't happen. According to director Akiva Schaffer, Paramount wasn't immediately sold on the idea, even with Liam Neeson attached as the lead. So, how did it get the greenlight? Simple. Neeson roasted the Paramount execs in a hilarious test scene that left no room for doubt. Schaffer told Filmmaker Magazine: '[Liam Neeson's casting] was not quite enough for the studio for whatever reason, and they asked us to do a proof of concept.' To prove their vision, Schaffer and his team went scrappy. They threw together a five-minute mock sequence on the Paramount lot in an old warehouse filled with lighting equipment, turning it into a gritty noir-style set reminiscent of Beverly Hills Cop II . The scene mashed up parts from different bits in the script, including an interrogation with Kevin Durand and comedy pulled from the sequence with Busta Rhymes. But the mic-drop moment came at the end, when Neeson locked eyes with the camera and delivered a fourth-wall-breaking takedown that sealed the deal. 'There's that noir lighting on his face, and he says, 'That goes for you, too. Yes, you, the Paramount greenlight committee. I see you there. What the f*ck are you waiting for? Why don't you get your pencil pushers to sign [on] the line? 'I'll tell you what. Make sure they have a line item for adult diapers and cocaine in case one of you ever wants to visit set,' or something like that. He basically talks shit to them and leaves. And it worked!' Apparently, that ballsy scene was exactly the kind of chaos the studio needed to see. I would love to see that video, so hopefully it gets released one day! The final film delivers exactly what that proof-of-concept promised… a wild, ridiculous ride that pays loving tribute to the 1988 classic. Neeson steps into the spotlight as the son of Leslie Nielsen's iconic Frank Drebin. The new Naked Gun lineup includes Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, Busta Rhymes, and Cody Rhodes, bringing a mix of comedy, action, and hilarious absurdity. The Naked Gun is in theaters now and is absolutely worth seeing if you're into this franchise!
