Kulim Hi-Tech Park expansion to boost semiconductor sector

KULIM: The expansion of the Kulim Hi-Tech Park (KHTP) remains on track despite global uncertainties, including the reciprocal tariffs recently announced by United States President Donald Trump.
Kulim Technology Park Corporation Sdn Bhd (KTPC) group chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Sahil Zabidi said the developer of KHTP confirmed that the development of Industrial Zone Phase 5 of Malaysia's first and largest fully integrated science and technology park is progressing as planned.
"We wish to express our deepest appreciation to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, for approving the location and federal loan to fund this expansion. It is a tremendous boost in ensuring the sustainability of KHTP as a national initiative driving Malaysia's high-tech industry," he told the New Straits Times during an interview.
Sahil said that the continued development of KHTP is critical in supporting the government's National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS).
The NSS was launched in May 2024 to reinforce Malaysia's role in the global semiconductor supply chain.
It aims to enhance the value-added contribution of the manufacturing sector to the national gross domestic product (GDP), while also increasing the number of skilled workers and raising median wages in the sector, in line with the New Industrial Master Plan 2030.
"KHTP currently hosts four wafer fabrication manufacturers — Infineon, Osram, SilTerra and Fuji Electric — the highest number in any single industrial park in the country.
"The RM8.5 billion investment by Austrian chipboard manufacturer AT&S to produce high-end integrated circuit (IC) substrates represents a significant milestone for KHTP and completes our high-tech ecosystem.
"We are grateful for AT&S's commitment to contributing to the NSS by helping to develop a robust supporting industry. KTPC remains dedicated to building the necessary infrastructure to facilitate the growth of local vendors and suppliers in line with national goals," Sahil said.
He added that the ongoing development of 11 industrial lots under Phase 4A is expected to be completed by October this year.
"We have already secured one tenant and construction of their plant is underway. Negotiations with two additional potential investors are ongoing, and we anticipate finalising those deals by the end of this month. We are confident that all 11 lots will be fully taken up by next year," he said.
Regarding the next phase of expansion, Sahil said KTPC has signed an agreement with the landowner to acquire 190ha of adjacent oil palm plantation land for Phase 5, with physical works scheduled to commence next year.
"If all goes according to plan, we expect to begin marketing the Phase 5 lots by 2027. This expansion is vital to sustain KHTP's momentum for the next seven to ten years," he said.
Since its establishment 30 years ago, KHTP has attracted a total of RM181.5 billion in investments and is currently home to 56 manufacturers, including more than 20 multinational corporations from 12 countries, supported by 90 ancillary companies.
At present, KHTP employs approximately 45,000 workers, 95 per cent of whom are skilled local talents.
"Alhamdulillah, we have successfully met the mandates and objectives of this national project.
We are humbled to have received the Best Employer Award (Big company /GLC), presented by the prime minister during the national-level Labour Day celebration earlier this month.

US cuts Chinese medicine purchases threefold in April, according to customs data

MOSCOW, June 8 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- The United States drastically cut down the purchase of Chinese medicines in April, with imports in monetary terms showing a threefold drop to US$173.6 million compared to March, RIA Novosti calculations based on US customs data revealed on Sunday. The shipments of Iodine drugs made up the largest share of supplies in April, accounting for 75 per cent of Chinese medicine exports to the US. Additionally, antibiotics (9.5 per cent) and hormonal products (4.4 per cent ) also accounted for significant volumes of shipments in money. The major sellers of drugs to the US in April were India (19 per cent of US imports), Ireland (14 per cent) and Switzerland (13 per cent). China, with a 12 per cent share, ranked 12th, along with Hungary, Denmark and Japan. China and the US are now essentially in a state of trade war, which erupted after US President Donald Trump imposed a 10 per cent tariffs on imports of all Chinese goods in February, raising it to 20 per cent in March. After several reciprocal measures, the US tariff against Chinese goods reached 145 per cent, and the rate for US suppliers to China hit 125 per cent. However, already in mid-May, China and the US mutually reduced trade tariffs to 10 per cent, from May 14 for 90 days. Consequently, China started imposing a 10 per cent tariff on US imports, while the US levied a 30 per cent tariff on Chinese products as the 20 per cent "fentanyl" tariff remained in effect. In late spring, the sides accused each other of violating preliminary agreements. - Bernama-Sputnik-RIA Novosti

Trump bans use of masks at LA protests over immigration raids

A protester in Los Angeles is highlighted against tear gas and flash-bang fumes when clashes broke out with immigration and customs officials conducting a raid. (AP pic) MOSCOW : The US authorities will prohibit wearing masks at protests against the background of unrest in Los Angeles, US president Donald Trump said on Sunday, the Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported. The decision comes a day after White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that 2,000 National Guard troops would be deployed to Los Angeles following clashes between protestors and immigration and customs (ICE) agents conducting raids to identify undocumented migrants in downtown Los Angeles In a posting on Truth Social today, Trump thanked the National Guard for their work amid the unrest, and said: 'Also, from now on, MASKS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED to be worn at protests. What do these people have to hide, and why? 'Great job by the National Guard in Los Angeles after two days of violence, clashes and unrest … These Radical Left protests, by instigators and often paid troublemakers, will NOT BE TOLERATED … Again thank you to the National Guard for a job well done,' Trump said. California is traditionally considered a Democratic stronghold, and Trump has repeatedly criticised the state. Last month, he threatened to cut state funding over the participation of a transgender athlete in competitions. The administration has previously cancelled US$126.4 million in flood prevention projects and criticised California's handling of wildfires. On Saturday, California governor Gavin Newsom threatened that the state could forego paying federal taxes in response to possible massive federal funding cuts from the Trump administration.
