GMA Kapuso Foundation brought free medical services to the fisherfolk and divers in Sariaya, Quezon in recognition of Hypertension Awareness Month.
According to '24 Oras' Friday, among those whose livelihood depends on fishing is Marvin Rubia, who helps his mother-in-law who suffered a stroke in 2022.
'Doktor daw pong magpapagaling sa kaniya. Wala naman pong pera eh. 'Yung kinikita ko lang po, sapat lang sa pamilya namin,' Marvin said.
Marvin's father also constantly feels dizzy and gets abdominal pain.
In partnership with New World Diagnostics, GMA Kapuso Foundation offered free electrocardiogram (ECG) tests, hemoglobin A1C blood tests, and urinalysis to check for conditions like hypertension, kidney disease, or heart problems.
Consultations and a health lecture were also part of the activity.
''Yung iba baka walang mararamdaman kasi siya po ay silent killer or minsan tahimik lang pero nagko-cause na ng damage,' said Dr. Kevin Francis Uy Ang, an internal medicine specialist.
'Important kasi po stroke, 'no? May mga medications na need to be continued para hindi po maulit 'yung kaniyang stroke. Si tatay naman, we gave 'yung mga requests po para malaman kung ano 'yung cause ng abdominal pain niya,' he said.
A total of 100 beneficiaries also received medicine, giveaways, and food
"Nabigyan sila ng first na gamot. 'Pag natapos na, pumunta sila sa aming center. Kailangan pong ma-maintain nila,' said Sariaya Municipal Health Officer Irma Cadiz.

DOH monitoring mild variant of monkeypox in PH
The Department of Health (DOH) allayed the fears of the public as the monkeypox cases being monitored in the country are of Clade II variant, the mild variant of the said disease. According to Chino Gaston's report in '24 Oras' on Friday, the DOH, however, assured that it is on guard to prevent the entry of the more transmissible Clade 1b variant to the country. 'All of them are mpox Clade II. Yung [Clade] II, very mild, self-limiting, at tsaka ang transmission niya ay skin-to-skin contact,' said Health Secretary Ted Herbosa. (All of them are mpox Clade II. We have yet to monitor any mpox Clade 1b in the Philippines. The Clade II variant is very mild, self-limiting, and the transmission is only through skin-to-skin contact.) The DOH chief added that some of the fatalities it recorded did not die of mpox, but due to complications brought about by advanced human immunodeficiency virus or HIV. The latest mpox case logged was a resident from Maco, Davao de Oro. The patient has already recovered, but there were two other suspected cases in Maco and in Nabunturan. Another case was also reported in Iloilo Province but was also declared recovered by the provincial health office. In Iloilo City, on the other hand, four individuals are under isolation and monitoring due to suspected infection. Meanwhile, the local authorities in Bacolod City will strictly monitor hotels, spas, wet markets, and terminals to prevent any outbreaks. Among the symptoms to watch out for include a skin rash or mucosal lesions, which can last two to four weeks. The rashes are accompanied by fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy, and swollen lymph nodes. There is no cure to mpox for now, but isolation, proper care, and rest for up to four weeks would suffice for recovery. — Vince Angelo Ferreras/BAP, GMA Integrated News

Slipper makers from Liliw, Laguna get free medical services from GMA Kapuso Foundation
Slipper makers from Liliw, Laguna received free medical services from GMA Kapuso Foundation just in time for Hypertension Awareness Month this May. According to '24 Oras' Friday, among the slipper makers from the municipality is Alma Dadis, who takes maintenance medicines for high blood pressure. 'Lagi pong nahihilo, nasakit ang ulo ko tsaka sa may batok,' Alma said. Her coworker, Ruel Opeña, also shared his struggles with high blood pressure but mentioned prioritizing his child's needs as a single parent over getting checked by a doctor. ''Pag ako nagpapa-BP, mataas ang BP ko, 180 over 120,' Ruel said. GMA Kapuso Foundation offered free ECG (electrocardiogram) tests to check for heart problems and hemoglobin A1C blood tests to determine their blood sugar levels over the past three months. Consultations and health lectures were also part of the program. 'Ang normal po na blood pressure, according po sa American Heart Association 2024, hindi po hihigit sa 120 na systolic at hindi po hihigit sa 80 na diastolic pressure. Kapag po more than 130, hypertensive na po ang isang pasyente. Puwede pong magresulta po sa pagkakaroon ng sakit sa puso, sakit sa bato, at stroke kapag hindi po naagapan,' said Dra. Cristina Tabucan-Mendoza, an adult cardiologist and internal medicine specialist. During the event, Ruel was indeed confirmed to have high blood pressure. He was prescribed and given medication. 'Advice po ay ituloy po natin 'yung monthly follow-up sa ating mga health center at sa main health center,' said Liliw Municipal Health Officer Dr. John Calvin Lagutin. In addition to the medical services, the beneficiaries also received medicines, giveaways, food, and protective gloves, which they can use for work. Meanwhile, the GMA Kapuso Foundation with the help of the Office of Civil Defense have sent relief goods to Maguinanao del Sur via a Philippine Air Force C-130 aircraft for those who have been affected by flooding due to the relentless rain. The relief goods will be distributed to residents of Datu Abdullah Sangki this weekend.
