Man Utd told Arsenal's winning goal should not have stood after officials 'failed'

Manchester United felt aggrieved that Riccardo Calafiori's header for Arsenal was allowed to stand because goalkeeper Altay Bayindir was impeded by William Saliba Manchester United were unfortunate to lose to Arsenal because the winning goal should have been disallowed, according to Mark Clattenburg. United began their Premier League season with a 1-0 defeat by the Gunners at Old Trafford on Sunday. ‌ Arsenal 's goal came from their first corner of the game as Riccardo Calafiori headed Declan Rice 's cross over the line after Altay Bayindir failed to punch the ball clear. Bayindir felt he had been impeded by William Saliba, but the goal was allowed to stand. ‌ The goal has seen a continuation of the debate over United's goalkeepers, with Bayindir standing in for Andre Onana, who missed the game following an injury. Gary Neville felt Bayindir was at fault and needed to be stronger, but ex-Premier League referee Clattenburg had sympathy for the Turkey international. ‌ 'In real time, I did not see any problem with Arsenal's goal,' he told United In Focus. 'But when you watch it in slow motion, you can see Mason Mount was having his shirt pulled and Bayindir was being impeded while challenging for the ball. PGMOL said they would punish this type of challenge more, but again they failed.' His words echoed those of Ruben Amorim, who felt aggrieved that the goal was allowed to stand. He said: 'I understand we want goals, but when you touch the goalkeeper that way, I think it's hard. Especially to lose with a goal like this, I think it's hard. It was a strange goal. 'When you touch the goalkeeper, he needs to use his hands to catch the ball, not push players. He chooses to push players and let the ball pass. But again, it's the rules. If it's allowed, we need to do the same thing.' Arsenal have become the masters of scoring from set pieces over the past few seasons and appeared to have identified United's weakness. Saliba occupied Bayindir, who got a hand to Rice's cross, but could only divert it into the head of an unmarked Calafiori at the back post. 'The goalkeeper has got to be stronger,' Neville said on co-commentary for Sky Sports. 'I think he will complain that he was fouled. He's got a player in front of him, there's a lot of pushing and shoving going on. I just think your goalkeeper has to be stronger.' ‌ Neville has urged United to pursue Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez or Gianluigi Donnarumma, who is poised to leave Paris Saint-Germain. The ex-United defender believes the big personalities of the two keepers and their ability to cope with pressure would help his old club and Wayne Rooney agrees. Rooney said on his podcast: "Donnarumma, I think he's 26, he's one of the best goalkeepers in the world, it would be crazy if Man United don't go for him." However, Amorim insists he is "happy with the three goalkeepers" and added: "I think we prove today that we can win any game in the Premier League, especially against a great team like Arsenal and we were the better team. So I'm happy with the players."

Fan arrested over alleged Semenyo abuse banned from every UK football stadium

A man arrested after Bournemouth player Antoine Semenyo reported being racially abused during their match against Liverpool has been banned from every football ground in the country. Friday's Premier League opener at Anfield was briefly halted in the 29th minute after Semenyo reported being abused by someone in the crowd. The 47-year-old suspect from Liverpool has been released on bail after he was arrested the following day on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence. As part of his bail conditions, he cannot attend any regulated football match in the UK, and is not allowed within a mile of any football stadium, Merseyside Police said. The force's investigation into the incident is ongoing. Match referee Anthony Taylor stopped play in the 29th minute and a fan was ejected from Anfield. Semenyo scored twice in the second half to help bring Bournemouth back from two goals down before Liverpool went on to eventually win 4-2. More Trending The following day, the 25-year-old Ghanaian international said on social media: 'Last night at Anfield will stay with me forever – not because of one person's words, but because of how the entire football family stood together.' He thanked his teammates, Liverpool players and fans 'who showed their true character', and the Premier League officials 'who handled it professionally'. Football organisation Team Grassroots led a wave of support towards Skye after she was subjected to abuse from 'pathetic' trolls. 'Please send your love and support to 16-year-old Skye Stout from Scotland, and don't let the ignorant bullies win,' they posted on X. 'Yesterday, the official page of the Scottish club Kilmarnock women's team announced that the club had signed a contract with 16-year-old midfielder Skye Stout. 'A grassroots player signing her first pro contract, should have been a moment to cherish for her, however, Skye was forced to endure ridicule from ignorant and disrespectful fans who began to humiliate her over her facial acne. 'Things escalated to the point where the club decided to delete all posts mentioning Skye Stout in an effort to stop the bullying from haters.' Former Scottish First Minister Hamza Yusef also voiced his support, describing the trolls as 'sad' and 'pathetic'. 'Skye Stout has just signed for Kilmarnock. At 16 she has already achieved more than her trolls ever will,' he said. Good luck Skye ❤️ — Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) August 15, 2025 'Imagine being a grown man abusing a 16-year-old? What a sad, pathetic, unhappy life these trolls have.' In his video message to Skye, popular football pundit McCoist said: 'I've just heard you've just signed for Kilmarnock which is absolutely fantastic news. 'I played down there for three years and it was three of the best years of my footballing life and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. It's a fantastic club with great people. More Trending 'You do well Skye, enjoy your football and hopefully one of these days I'll get a chance to come and see you play. Good luck.' Kilmarnock Women manager Jim Chapman was full of praise for his team after they thumped St Johnstone. 'I'm delighted for the girls, the work-rate was excellent on a very warm day,' he said. 'The girls continued on from the work we've been doing in pre-season. 'My only criticised at half-time was that it could've been even more. We had a little blip after half-time so that's something to work on. But overall it was a comfortable win – credit to all the girls.' For more stories like this, check our sport page.
