No plans to contest in any by-election after leaving Umno: Tengku Zafrul

Published on: Monday, June 09, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 09, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: KUALA LUMPUR: Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz ( pic ) today clarified that he has never considered contesting in any by-election, either at the parliament or state level, following his exit from Umno and his announcement of intent to join Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) on May 30. In a statement posted on his social media today, Tengku Zafrul stressed that the possibility of running in a by-election was never part of his decision-making process when he chose to leave Umno. Advertisement 'I would like to make it clear that no discussion related to this matter ever took place, and it was not part of my consideration in making that decision. 'I strongly disagree with triggering by-elections without urgent necessity, as they consume both time and public funds,' he said. Addressing his resignation from Umno, Tengku Zafrul reiterated that it was a personal decision, made without external pressure. 'I acknowledge it was not an easy decision, but I carefully considered all views and opinions before arriving at it. Advertisement 'In a democratic society, every individual has the right to make personal choices. I deeply appreciate the feedback and reception to my decision,' he said. Tengku Zafrul also expressed his gratitude to Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, the Umno Supreme Council, and especially the grassroots members in the Kota Raja division for their support during his time with the party. As for his Cabinet position, Tengku Zafrul said he would leave the matter entirely to the discretion of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. 'I am always ready to serve the country in any capacity. I left the corporate world with the intention to contribute, and as long as my service is needed, I will continue to give without necessarily holding any position,' he said. Tengku Zafrul also confirmed that he will continue serving as a Senator until the end of his term this December. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? RM600k gone: Research officer falls for WhatsApp investment scam

KUANTAN: A 57-year-old research officer from Rompin lost over half a million ringgit of her life savings to a non-existent investment scheme — in less than two months. Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the woman was lured in after receiving an initial RM1,000 profit from her first online investment, only to be defrauded of RM600,500 in total. He said the victim was added to a WhatsApp group named "K81 Lombard Stock Investment Academy" on March 21 this year. "She was instructed to download an application via a link shared in the group. Her first investment of RM14,000 generated a RM1,000 return, which was credited into her account along with her capital. "Encouraged by the initial profit, she proceeded to make 28 transactions totalling RM600,500 into three different bank accounts between April 23 and June 4. The app claimed her investment had grown to over RM300,000 in profit," he said in a statement today. However, when the woman tried to withdraw RM50,000, she was told to pay RM200,000 as a "service charge". Realising she had been scammed, she lodged a police report yesterday.

Ex-KL Tower operator loses bid to cite minister for contempt

Published on: Monday, June 09, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 09, 2025 By: Ho Kit Yen, FMT Text Size: The Kuala Lumpur High Court dismissed Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd's bid to bring contempt proceedings and secure an injunction against the government and LSH Service Master Sdn Bhd with costs of RM65,000. (Envato Elements pic) Kuala Lumpur: The High Court here has dismissed an attempt by the former operator of KL Tower to initiate contempt proceedings against communications minister Fahmi Fadzil and seven others, including federal territories land and mines director general Azmi Mohd Zain. Justice Roz Mawar Rozain ruled that the plaintiffs – Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd and Menara KL Sdn Bhd – failed to establish the commission of acts by the defendants that disrupted the administration of justice or court proceedings. Advertisement 'The plaintiffs' lease expired on May 31 and (the government, named as a defendant in the proceedings) is entitled to retake possession,' the judge said when handing down her decision. Ros Mawar added that LSH Service Master Sdn Bhd, LSH Best Builders Sdn Bhd, and Service Master (M) Sdn Bhd, also named as defendants, came in subsequently under a new concession agreement. She ordered Hydroshoppe and Menara KL to pay a total of RM25,000 in costs to the government and LSH Service Master. The court also dismissed an injunction application filed by Hydroshoppe against the government and LSH Service Master, holding that it had been rendered academic. Advertisement The judge ordered Hydroshoppe to pay the government and LSH Service Master an additional sum of RM40,000 as costs over the dismissal of the injunction. The court will hear the bids by the government and LSH Service Master to strike out Hydroshoppe's lawsuit on July 14. Hydroshoppe and Menara KL filed the suit claiming that the LSH group had induced the commission by the government of a breach of contract. They asked the court to declare the award of the KL Tower concession to LSH Service Master void and unlawful. They also sought an estimated RM1 billion in damages, and for the concession to be transferred back to them. Lawyer Vinayak Sri Ram appeared for Hydroshoppe while senior federal counsel appeared for Fahmi and lawyer Malik Imtiaz Sarwar represented LSH Service Master. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
