KUCHING (June 11): Former Kanowit MP Tan Sri Leo Moggie Irok said residents of a few longhouses located along the Nibong-Tada road in Kanowit had their Gawai Dayak celebration marred by water supply disruptions.
Moggie, who is former Tenaga Nasional Berhad chairman and former federal Minister of Energy, Communications and Multimedia, said he could empathise with the frustration of those in Lawas over their unresolved water woes.
'I refer to your ( The Borneo Post ) article titled 'Frustration mounts in Lawas over unresolved water woes' published online on June 11. Similarly, residents of a number of longhouses along the Nibong-Tada road in Kanowit had their Gawai celebration marred by disruption of water supply.
'The issue of unsatisfactory water supply along the Nibong-Tada road was thought to have been resolved, as I had personal exchanges of correspondence with the relevant agencies—including the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development in Putrajaya and the Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department—in 2017 and 2018 over the matter,' he told The Borneo Post .
He said upgrading works were supposed to have been carried out.
'Yes, I can empathise with the frustration of those in Lawas. As for the residents of the various longhouses along the Nibong-Tada road, they are looking forward to celebrating Gawai next year without any issues of basic facilities,' he said.
He said that while Sarawak prepares for a visionary future, its current basic needs must also be properly addressed.
The Borneo Post is reaching out to the relevant agencies and ministry for comment over the issue. Gawai Kanowit lead Leo Moggie water woes

Over 10,000 show solidarity to Zara in KK

Thousands turned for the Himpunan Mega Solidariti #JusticeForZara at Padang Merdeka in Kota Kinabalu tonight. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 15): More than 10,000 people thronged Padang Merdeka here tonight to show solidarity to the late Zara Qairina Mahathir. Members of the public started gathering at the field as early as 7pm, carrying placards and banners depicting their support for the Form One student. The venue was visibly packed after 8pm, with several government and opposition leaders and members also spotted at the scene. It was understood that the event was organised by a coalition of non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Irwan Idrus, who came with five friends and family members from Tanjung Aru, attended the gathering to show his support to the late Zara and family. He expressed frustration that the case has been going on for some time but there is still no conclusion, as he lamented slow action by the relevant authorities. Irwan (second right) with family and friends attending the gathering to show support to the late Zara and family. 'So we hope that with the power of the rakyat, we can pressure the authorities to provide a swift conclusion to the case so that we can find out what really happened to Zara,' he told The Borneo Post when met. Among the political leaders present was Sepanggar Member of Parliament Datuk Ts Mustapha Sakmud, who went on stage and joined the public in demanding justice for Zara. Mustapha told the crowd that he forgives all those who tried to implicate his wife in the case, a rumour that had previously spread on social media. Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) legal advisor Chin Tek Ming also went on stage and addressed the crowd in a show of solidarity. Other Warisan members spotted were vice president Datuk Junz Wong, Putatan chief Datuk Uda Sulai as well as Darau assemblyman Datuk Azhar Matussin. State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew also spoke to reporters at the location. Liew said they gathered there as concerned citizens to reaffirm the ''No' to School Bullying' message, and to advocate for institutional reforms in residential schools. She proposed the pressing need to do away with any 'reactive approach' whereby the relevant authorities may only respond when a tragedy occurs, causing the loss of lives. 'We demand justice for 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir in unison. 'A promising life was cut short under mysterious circumstances. 'Her tragic death must not be in vain,' she said. Two more rallies are expected to he held on Saturday at Taman Chong Thien Vun and Lintasan Deasoka.

Melaka resolves 30-year railway land issue with 47 approval letters

ALOR GAJAH: The Melaka government has resolved a 30-year-old issue concerning railway reserve land in Pengkalan by distributing 47 approval letters for state land applications. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh stated that the handover reflects the state's commitment to addressing community needs and ensuring policies positively impact lives. He confirmed that 45 applications involved the long-delayed Pengkalan railway reserve land, while two were allocated for temple use. Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) also received approval to build a substation in Mukim Kelemak, Alor Gajah, benefiting over 3,050 users in residential, commercial, and government areas. The approvals were announced during the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) programme for the Rembia constituency, attended by coordinator Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan. This year, 96 state land applications in Alor Gajah district have been approved, with Notice 5A issued to inform applicants of payable fees for land titles. Ab Rauf emphasised that the land will enable new homes, community spaces, and family gatherings, valuing it beyond monetary terms. The state government offers land premiums below market rates, ranging from RM9,000 to RM25,000, based on plot size. A 5% discount is available for Notice 5A recipients who settle payments within three months without requesting extensions or premium reductions. - Bernama

Decades-Long Wait Ends As Melaka Hands Over 47 Approval Letters For Railway Reserve Land

ALOR GAJAH, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- After more than 30 years, the issue involving railway reserve land in Pengkalan here has been resolved, with the Melaka government handing over 47 approval letters for state land application, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh. He said the handover ceremony reflected the state government's concern in understanding the community's needs and ensuring that every policy and development project delivers a positive impact on the people's lives. 'A total of 45 applications involved the Pengkalan railway reserve land that had been delayed for three decades, and two plots for temples. 'Also approved was Tenaga Nasional Berhad's (TNB) application to place a substation on Plot 1, Mukim Kelemak, Alor Gajah district, which will provide electricity to residential, commercial, hospital, and government office areas, benefiting more than 3,050 users,' he said today. He said this at the handover of the approval letters in conjunction with the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) programme for the Rembia state constituency, which was also attended by the coordinator for the constituency, Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan. He said this year, 96 state land applications have been approved in the district, followed by the issuance of Notice 5A by the land administrator. Notice 5A is an official document informing applicants of the fees due, including document preparation and registration costs, that they must pay to obtain the land titles. 'It is on this land that new homes will be built, gardens will be filled with flowers, children will run and play, and families will gather every weekend. 'Its value is not merely measured in square feet, but in the space to build a life and pass down a legacy of peace to future generations,' he said. He said the state government imposes land premiums below market rates, ranging between RM9,000 and RM25,000, depending on the land size, compared to hundreds of thousands of ringgit.
