ACB probe into construction of Barapullah Phase-3 ordered
CM Rekha Gupta headed an expenditure finance committee meeting along with Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Verma, where the decision was taken for an Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) probe into the matter.
Gupta further alleged 'corruption' by the previous Aam Aadmi Party government in the matter of delayed completion of the flyover.
According to the government, the elevated road was scheduled for completion in October 2017 but was repeatedly delayed, and eventually the matter went into arbitration.
'The ruling government favoured the contractor with an award of Rs 120 crore. When the payment was withheld, the company approached the high court, which in May 2023 ordered the PWD to pay Rs 175 crore, including interest and GST. The sum was subsequently paid during the tenure of then-PWD minister Atishi,' the government said.

Duo held in 2024 pharma drugs seizure discharged due to lack of evidence
MUMBAI: The sessions court on Monday discharged two men who were named as accused in a 2024 pharmaceutical drug seizure case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, observing that the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case against them and had not produced any corroborative evidence to show their involvement in the alleged crime. (Shutterstock) On June 12, 2024, the Azad Maidan Unit of the Anti-Barcotics Cell seized 2,160 tablets and 74 strips containing pheniramine maleate from a parked handcart close to a rickshaw stand in front of the Kismat Hostel near Masjid Station. Three men were booked in the case, out of which accused No. 3, in his statement to the ANC, had admitted that the contraband material belonged to him. While hearing the plea of Saddam Sheikh and Imran Khan, the owners of the handcart seeking to be discharged from the case, additional sessions judge RB Rote said, 'I find that the evidence as collected during the investigation, and as relied on by the prosecution, is not sufficient to frame charges against accused No. 1 and 2.' While the seizure itself was not disputed, the court noted that the prosecution failed to prove that Sheikh and Khan were the owners of the recovered contraband material. Moreover, the prosecution primarily relied on witness statements recorded under Section 161 (process of examination of witnesses by police during an investigation) of the CrPC and the seizure panchnama. Even there, the court noted that the witnesses who spoke about the accused were not present at the scene and their information was based on hearsay. 'Such type of statements cannot be the basis for framing charges against the accused persons,' said additional Sessions Judge R B Rote while discharging the two. The court further highlighted the absence of forensic evidence or any chemical analysis linking the seized drugs to the accused. Regarding the nature of the substance, the court noted that the recovered pheniramine maleate did not qualify as a commercial quantity under the NDPS Act, which further weakened the case. 'The seized contraband in the present matter is of non-commercial quantity and there is no material on record to show that the accused persons were found in possession of the said contraband or they were the owners of the said contraband.' The judge concluded that mere recovery of drugs was insufficient to frame charges under the NDPS Act without establishing conscious possession or ownership. 'The only material on record is that some contraband was recovered from a place, but the link of the accused persons with the said contraband is not established. Therefore, I find that the evidence, as collected during the investigation and as relied on by the prosecution, is not sufficient to frame charges against the accused persons,' the court stated.

Centre keen on building Amaravati: Madhav
Narasaraopet: BJP state president PVN Madhav said the Central government is extending all kinds of support and cooperation for the development of state capital Amaravati. He said on the occasion of Independence Day, Tiranga rallies will be organised in every constituency and every house will be encouraged to hoist the national flag. Earlier, he consoled the workers who were injured in a quarry accident at Ballikurava and undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Narasaraopet. He expressed confidence that the coalition government will extend the support and cooperation to the families of six workers who died and also to those who were injured in the accident.

Union Minister urges CM to raise wages of mid-day meal cooks
New Delhi/Hyderabad: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has formally urged Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to increase the wages of mid-day meal cooks working in government schools across the state. In a letter written on Monday, Pradhan emphasized the importance of implementing the guidelines laid out under the Prime Minister Poshan Abhiyan. According to UMoSHA, the request follows a recent meeting between union leaders representing Telangana's mid-day meal cooks and senior central ministers, including Pradhan and Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar, in New Delhi. During the meeting, union representatives submitted a petition calling for a hike in their honorarium and greater social security. Responding to concerns over pending Central funds, Pradhan clarified that all dues from the Centre had been cleared. He assured the delegation that he would take up the matter with the state government and push for the sanctioning of any outstanding bills. Pradhan further recommended an increase in the monthly honorarium to Rs 17,000, along with the provision of ESI and PF benefits under applicable labor laws. 'It is vital that the dignity and rights of these essential workers be upheld,' he noted in the communication. The letter comes at a time when midday meal workers across the state have voiced growing concerns over low wages and lack of formal protections, despite playing a crucial role in the welfare of school children.
