Gabrielle Union Breaks Silence On Husband Dwyane Wade's Low Key Health Scare: 'He's Cancer-Free'
The star actress finally spoke up in the aftermath of her former NBA star husband's health scare, which initially left her in a very shaken state.
Gabrielle Union also confirmed that Dwyane Wade kept his medical struggles safely tucked away from the attention of most of his family and the public.
The 52-year-old popped in for an interview during the New York premiere of her new film "Riff Raff" to speak on a few things, including Wade's current situation.
In her words: "He's cancer-free now. He was smart to delay talking about his diagnosis and the surgery for over a year to give us all a little time to make peace with it and let all of our very intense fears kind of dissipate a little bit, but he's brave."
Union stressed that the former basketballer is doing well, and there is a sense of pride in his bravery. According to her, Wade took the necessary steps to address his health and publicly chose to share his journey.
The actress expressed in the interview with Access Hollywood that they hoped that by him doing so and being vulnerable, he could inspire and possibly save others facing similar challenges.
The actress also appeared on "The View" as part of the promo for her new project. She touched on Wade's health scare, sharing that he is now cancer-free. "He's had the surgery, and he's cancer-free, but it was a challenge," she noted.
Union also revealed that the former NBA player kept his diagnosis largely private, sharing the information with only a small circle of family members. She described her reaction upon receiving distressing news from Wade as one of profound shock and paralysis due to fear.
Instead of focusing on the potential for survival, she immediately succumbed to the thought of the worst-case scenario, which was the loss of Wade.
While she had many friends who had overcome cancer, her mind went straight to the idea of him being gone, and it took time for everyone involved to process the situation.
The father-of-five also voiced out his thoughts upon receiving the diagnosis of a cancerous tumor on his right kidney in 2023. He hopped on his "The Why With Dwyane Wade" podcast in the January 39 episode to discuss the development.
"I think it was the first time that my family, my dad, my kids, they saw me weak," he acknowledged. The NBA champ added that he often felt isolated but ultimately found strength in his family's support.
He expressed gratitude for their presence, acknowledging that, despite differences in communication and opinions, they always showed up for him during difficult times.
The athlete candidly shared the pressure he felt as a man to appear strong, admitting it was challenging to let his family witness his vulnerable moments. However, he recognized the importance of embracing those weaknesses and accepting their support.
Speaking of surgery, the actress is not ignorant of the overwhelming reports of her allegedly fixing her face. Union explained that her near-constant public presence prevented her from getting an actual facelift.
"As much as what happens or doesn't happen with my face is speculated, [you're usually] missing for six months [after getting] a facelift," she added. The Hollywood icon finally declared, "I've never been missing for six months. Get it right!
She made this statement while promoting the new SimStyled salon experience with JCPenney Salons in Los Angeles. Union and her close friend Larry Sims, also a celebrity hairstylist, launched the partnership with the famous retailing company.
In October 2024, The Blast reported that the actress celebrated her 52nd birthday by sharing a powerful message on Instagram, accompanied by a slightly daring selfie. She looked flawless in a series of fashionable looks, including a video of her in a shimmery see through, halter-neck dress.
In her caption, she embraced the realities of being 52, highlighting accountability, grace, and self-confidence. She emphasized the importance of owning up to mistakes and being open to growth while expressing pride in her achievements.
Union concluded her message with a firm declaration of love for herself and a commitment to advocating for her community. "This is fighting for my people and yours. This is me at 52. Loving ALL of me," she wrote.
From the discovery to the surgery, Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade exhibited impressive decorum, which makes this victory worth it!

Bill Maher says ‘The View' co-hosts are not ‘the best advertisement for women' in blunt criticism
HBO host Bill Maher had some harsh words for the co-hosts of 'The View' on Monday. While interviewing actress and talk show host Drew Barrymore on his 'Club Random' podcast, Maher admitted he doesn't think that the five women who host the ABC show are the best spokespeople for the female perspective. 'And I like everyone, but I don't know if they're really at this moment the best advertisement for women,' he told the actress. The topic came up when 'The Drew Barrymore Show' host told Maher to visit New York City and be a guest on her show, which prompted Maher to talk about his friendship with several of the women on 'The View.' He acknowledged his fondness for them as his friends but admitted their show is 'a lot.' 'I'm friendly with some of the ladies on 'The View' and I love them but, like, that show's a lot.' 3 Maher said to Barrymore that the hosts on 'The View' are not the best representation of women at this moment. YouTube/Club Random Podcast Barrymore brought up that 'View' co-host Joy Behar appeared on her show recently and Maher remarked, 'I love Joy.' He went on to say that though he likes everybody on the ABC talk show, he's not such a fan of their talking points on the program. 'They say some things that are just like, not helpful, say to elections.' Maher appeared as a guest on 'The View' in May 2024, where he clashed with co-host Sunny Hostin about Israel's conduct in its war with Hamas. 3 Maher insisted that he just is not a fan of the talking points on the program. Instagram/@thedrewbarrymoreshow Hostin argued that Israel was murdering innocent Palestinian civilians and children in the conflict, and Maher pushed back. He stated that he was concerned about innocent lives being lost but insisted that Israel has the right to fight its war with Hamas and that if Hamas was concerned about innocent lives, they'd stop their attacks. 'That's what happens in a war. Here's a way to stop that, stop attacking Israel,' he said. 3 Maher clashed with 'The View' co-host Sunny Hostin when he was a guest on the show in May 2024. ABC The HBO host also called out 'The View' co-host Whoopi Goldberg in recent weeks, after she claimed in July that Black people are oppressed in America the same way that women are oppressed in Iran. 'That is something that, again, is infuriating about the far left, I would say. Call them whatever they wanted. 'Not the woke, the stupid woke, like Whoopi Goldberg, love her, but when she said a couple weeks ago that being Black was the same as being a woman in Iran, it's like, yeah, in 1920, but not today,' Maher said during an episode of his podcast with his guest, progressive commentator Brian Tyler Cohen.
