Glad about response over concerns on draft norms on lending against gold, says TN CM
Chennai, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Friday said he was glad that the Union government has responded to concerns over RBI's draft directions on lending against gold collateral and batted for prior consultation with states on such matters.
In a social media post, Stalin said: "Glad to note that @FinMinIndia has responded to the concerns raised by me in my letter to the Hon'ble Union Finance Minister regarding @RBI's draft guidelines on gold loans.
Protecting the interests of small borrowers, especially those seeking loans below Rs.2 lakh such as farmers and daily earners and ensuring timely and accessible credit has been my consistent demand.
While appreciating the positive consideration given to this issue, we emphasize that such policies having significant impact on poor should be arrived after due, prior consultation with States."
On May 28, CM Stalin wrote to the Centre, flagging concerns and sought easing of norms related to gold loan.
He had said: "Our people are simple, dignified, and resilient. Even when all they have is half a rupee, they save it carefully, adding to it bit by bit, until they can buy a single gold bead. Not for show. Not for luxury. But for emergencies—moments when there is no one else to turn to. This is not ornamental gold. It is their shield against life's uncertainties.
Today, the RBI has proposed needless restrictions on gold loans, making it harder for poor and middle-class families to access credit with self-respect. This is not merely a regulation. It is a blow to their dignity and survival.
At a time when many are already caught in the cruel grip of #LoanSharks and forced into #LoanApps during times of desperation, is it fair to push them further into those traps instead of protecting them? I respectfully urge Hon'ble @nsitharaman and the @RBI Governor to ease the rules on #GoldLoan. Let our people pledge their hard-earned gold with dignity."

Indias GST Collections In May Surge Over 16% To Rs 2.01 Lakh Crore
New Delhi: India's gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection for May 2025 reached Rs 2.01 lakh crore, marking a 16.4 per cent rise compared to the Rs 1.72 lakh crore collected in May 2024, according to data released by the Ministry of Finance on Sunday. This marks the second month in a row that GST revenues have stayed above the Rs 2 lakh crore mark, indicating healthy economic activity and steady consumption growth. In April, GST collections had touched an all-time high of Rs 2.37 lakh crore, which was a 13 per cent jump from March. That spike was largely due to year-end financial filings and reconciliations. However, the strong numbers in May suggest that the momentum is continuing beyond seasonal factors. Net GST revenue -- which includes refunds -- also grew significantly, rising by over 20 per cent to Rs 1.73 lakh crore. Domestic GST collections increased by 13 per cent, while revenue from imports rose sharply by 25.7 per cent. Meanwhile, India's overall economy is also showing signs of stable growth. Data released on May 30 showed that the country achieved its growth target of 6.5 per cent for the financial year 2024. The economy expanded by 7.4 per cent in the January to March quarter, bouncing back strongly from earlier slowdowns. Consumption, a key driver of growth, also improved over the year. After growing by 5.6 per cent in the previous financial year, consumption has picked up again. In April, consumer durable goods, such as appliances and electronics, grew by 6.4 per cent, slightly lower than the 6.9 per cent growth in March. Meanwhile, in April, the GST collections had surged to a record high of Rs 2.37 lakh crore, which was a 12.6 per cent increase from Rs 2.10 lakh crore in the same month the previous year. The increase in GST collections in the previous month (April) had been driven by a higher level of economic activity and improved compliance, a senior official had said.

RBI likely to cut repo rate by 25 bps on June 6 amid low inflation, say experts
NEW DELHI: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is likely to announce a third consecutive 25 basis points (bps) rate cut on June 6, amid easing inflation and global economic uncertainty driven by US tariff actions. With consumer price inflation remaining below the 4 per cent median target, experts believe the move would support growth during a period of external volatility, according to a PTI report. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), the RBI's rate-setting panel, will begin deliberations on the next bi-monthly policy on June 4. The decision is scheduled to be announced on Friday, June 6. Following 25 bps repo rate cuts in both February and April, which brought the key policy rate down to 6 per cent, the six-member MPC, led by RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra, also changed its policy stance from 'neutral' to 'accommodative' in April. The central bank has now reduced the policy repo rate by a cumulative 50 bps in 2025 so far, prompting multiple banks to lower their External Benchmark Lending Rates (EBLRs) and Marginal Cost of Funds-Based Lending Rates (MCLR). "We do believe that given the rather benign inflation conditions and the liquidity situation which has been made very comfortable through various measures of the RBI, the MPC would go in for a 25 bps cut in the repo rate on the (June) 6th. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The commentary on both growth and inflation will be important as there are expectations of revisions in their forecasts for both the parameters," said Madan Sabnavis, chief economist, Bank of Baroda. He also expects the RBI to provide detailed insight into global factors affecting the Indian economy, especially in light of the expiration of US tariff relief in July. ICRA's chief economist, Aditi Nayar, also projects continued monetary easing through the year, as CPI inflation is forecast to remain below 4 per cent for most of the fiscal. "A 25 bps rate cut is expected next week, followed by two more cuts over the subsequent two policy reviews, taking the repo rate to 5.25 per cent by the end of the cycle," she said. The RBI's annual report, released on Thursday reiterated the central bank's plan to manage liquidity operations in line with the prevailing monetary policy stance, ensuring sufficient liquidity for the productive sectors of the economy. The government has mandated the RBI to maintain CPI-based retail inflation at 4 per cent, with a flexibility band of plus or minus 2 per cent. Assocham Secretary General Manish Singhal also supported the case for easing, citing multi-year low inflation and overall positive macroeconomic indicators. "Though the INR is likely to come under depreciation pressure in the short term, especially if global interest rates (e.g. in the US) remain elevated, its impact will depend on the changes in global risk appetite, crude oil prices and the Fed's own monetary stance. We emphasize the importance of strategic patience over aggressive easing, given the current environment of steady growth and manageable inflation," said Singhal. Echoing similar sentiments, Signature Global founder and chairman Pradeep Aggarwal expressed hope that the RBI would offer relief to homebuyers with a rate cut. "Given that several scheduled commercial banks have been reducing their lending rates following the previous two RBI MPC outcomes, another rate cut at this juncture would act as a catalyst for increased housing demand across segments. As a result, both first-time homebuyers and investors are likely to be encouraged to enter the real estate market, further strengthening demand across the sector," Aggarwal said. Also read: RBI slaps Rs 54.78 crore in penalties on banks and NBFCs for compliance lapses in FY25 An article in the RBI's May Bulletin highlighted that domestic bond yields have declined to multi-year lows, aided by back-to-back policy rate cuts and liquidity-enhancing measures. The report noted that monetary and credit conditions are evolving in line with the RBI's accommodative policy approach, aiming to bring inflation in line with targets while bolstering growth. India's GDP growth is estimated to have dipped to a four-year low of 6.5 per cent in FY 2024–25. Meanwhile, retail inflation in April 2025 eased to 3.16 per cent- the lowest year-on-year print since July 2019. Odisha aims to double milk production in next 5 years: CM Majhi
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday said the state government is making all efforts to double the production of milk in Odisha in the next five years. While addressing the gathering during a programme held here on the occasion of the state-wide celebration of World Milk Day-2025, CM Majhi stated that milk production is a significant part of the rural economy. "It not only serves as a source of income but also plays a vital role in supplying nutritious food to our society. Our state produced 26.4 lakh metric tonnes of milk in 2023-24, and our government is trying to double it in the next five years. Therefore, our government has launched the 'Mukhyamantri Kamadhenu Yojana' to develop cow husbandry and increase milk production in the state," said CM Majhi. He noted that in the last financial year of 2024-25, 3 lakh beneficiaries have received financial assistance worth Rs. 71 crore. CM Majhi further added that the state government wants to establish Odisha as a major milk-producing state in the country. The Chief Minister urged everyone to contribute towards realising the slogan of 'Milk-rich Odisha, healthy Odisha'. CM Majhi stated that his government is always committed towards animal welfare. He said that the state government is providing financial assistance to registered 'goshalas' (cowsheds) under the Mukhyamantri Prani Kalyan Yojana launched by the state government with a budgetary outlay of Rs 186 crore for food, maintenance and upkeep of stray and helpless cattle in the cowsheds. Making a significant announcement, CM Majhi said that the state government will henceforth give Rs 3 more per litre to the milk producers associated with the state-owned Odisha State Cooperative Milk Producers' Federation Limited (OMFED), which will benefit 2.5 lakh milk farmers across the state. CM Majhi further announced that the state government will bear Rs 2 of the Rs 4 per litre increase in milk prices for consumers. He also announced that accidental death assistance of Rs 1 lakh will be provided to milk producers. It is worth noting that World Milk Day has been celebrated every year on June 1 since 2001 with the aim of spreading widespread awareness about the contribution of livestock keepers in nutritional development and economic growth, and the benefits of milk in a balanced diet.
