SRH out of contention after washout vs DC
Agencies
Sunrisers Hyderabad hopes of reaching the Indian Premier League play-offs are over after rain washed out their match against Delhi Capitals, reports BBC.com.
Needing to win their last four matches to have any chance of qualifying, Sunrisers' bowlers did their job by restricting the Capitals to 133 for7.
It could have been worse for the visitors who were 29-5 but Tristan Stubbs hit 41 not out and Ashutosh Sharma 41. Sunrisers captain Pat Cummins took 3-19.
Sunrisers' bid was ruined, however, when the drizzle that arrived late in Delhi's innings turned into torrential rain during the interval.
The players were unable to return to the field.
The point moves Sunrisers - beaten finalists last year - up to eighth but with three matches left they are seven points outside of the top four.
Delhi remain fifth, having missed the chance to move into the top four, but the point is more than looked likely during their batting effort.

Labuschagne to open for Australia, South Africa retain Mulder
Agencies London Marnus Labuschagne will open the batting for Australia in the World Test Championship final against South Africa at Lord's, starting on Wednesday, reports Labuschagne has never opened in Test cricket and moves up from number three, which will be occupied by the returning Cameron Green. In moving to the top of the order, Labuschagne becomes Usman Khawaja's fifth different opening partner since David Warner retired at the beginning of 2024. All-rounder Beau Webster keeps his place at number six and Josh Hazlewood gets the nod over fellow pace bowler Scott Boland. South Africa have preferred Lungi Ngidi to Dane Paterson in their pace attack, while Kagiso Rabada plays his first Test after serving a one-month ban for cocaine use earlier this year. Australia are looking to defend the title the won by beating India in the final at The Oval two years ago. The rotating cast of openers used since Warner called time on his Test career has included Steve Smith, Nathan McSweeney, Travis Head and Sam Konstas. While Smith and Head are back in their usual middle-order slots, 19-year-old Konstas has been overlooked, as has Leeds-born Josh Inglis, who made a century on debut against Sri Lanka in February. All-rounder Green has been out with a back injury and returns as a specialist batter. His presence creates a logjam in the middle-order, meaning Labuschagne is asked to move up. The 31-year-old has been in indifferent form, having not made a Test hundred since the fourth Ashes Test of 2023. With competition for places high, he is fighting to retain his spot for the Ashes series in Australia later this year. After the final, Australia head to the Caribbean for three Tests against West Indies. Labuschagne has previously opened on 15 occasions in first-class cricket, but not since 2016. 'With Marnus moving, we thought it's one spot up really. It's not too different to batting three,' said Australia captain Pat Cummins. 'Marnus has experience, he has done well here at Lord's and in England in general.' The bowling picture was made clear once Hazlewood, who has struggled with injuries in the recent past, proved his fitness. The 34-year-old missed the final two years ago, but arrives in London after being part of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru team that won the Indian Premier League. He joins a familiar-looking attack including fellow seamer Cummins, left-armer Mitchell Starc and off-spinner Nathan Lyon. Webster can provide support with either seam or off-spin. Proteas aim for glory at last South Africa are aiming to finally to get their hands on a senior global title after a string of near-misses. Most recently the Proteas were beaten in the final of the men's T20 World Cup in 2024, when the game against India was in their grasp. Their route to the final, and therefore the format of the Championship itself, has been questioned. South Africa finished top of the table having played 12 Tests, compared to the 19 of Australia and India, and 22 of England. Nevertheless, Temba Bavuma's men have the opportunity to become only the third team crowned Test champions, after Australia and inaugural winners New Zealand. They have retained all-rounder Wiann Mulder at number three, with his option to bowl seam influencing the decision to select Ngidi over Paterson. 'It's probably one of the tougher decisions that has been made,' said captain Bavuma. 'But it was more from a tactical point of view. There's probably a little bit more pace from Lungi, he's a bit taller as well. 'He will complement that bowling attack a little more. We have a guy like Mulder, who can give us something similar like Patto.' Teams Australia XI: Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Beau Webster, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon. South Africa XI: Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, Wiaan Mulder, Temba Bavuma (c), Tristan Stubbs, David Bedingham, Kyle Verreynne (wk), Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi.

Test cricket still the pinnacle in eyes of Kohli
Agencies India great Virat Kohli has reflected on his Test career for the first time since announcing his retirement from the format, calling it 'five levels' above other formats in the midst of Indian Premier League (IPL) glory, reports Interviewed in the moments after Royal Challengers Bengaluru finally lifted the trophy after 18 years of trying, a jubilant Kohli was given an opportunity to reminisce on his career in whites, providing perspective even as confetti fell on him in Ahmedabad. 'This moment (the IPL win) is right up there with the best moments I've had in my career, but it's still marks five levels under Test cricket. 'That's how much I value Test cricket. That's how much I love Test cricket.' On top of his 9230 runs at 46.85 in a revered career in whites, Kohli also featured in two World Test Championship Finals across the first two cycles of the competition. He then played a key role in India's third WTC campaign, finishing third behind South Africa and Australia, who meet at Lord's for the 2025 World Test Championship Final. The right-hand batter went on to push the next generation to pursue success in the red-ball format, even in a new era where white-ball cricket has claimed a bigger foothold in the game. 'I would just urge youngsters coming through to treat that format with respect. 'If you perform in Test cricket, you walk around anywhere in the world, people look you in the eye, shake your hand and say 'Well done, you played the game really well.' 'If you want to earn respect in world cricket all over, take up Test cricket, give your heart and soul to it and earn the respect from legends.' Kohli bowed out of Test cricket with 30 centuries, and India won 40 times in the 68 matches he captained, making him the most successful skipper for his country in the format.

At least 11 killed in stampede outside cricket stadium in southern India
agencies Bengaluru At least 11 people have been killed and many more injured in a stampede outside a cricket stadium in the southern Indian state of Karnataka to celebrate the home team's victory in the Indian Premier League (IPL), the world's most popular Twenty20 cricket tournament. 'No one expected such a huge crowd,' India's chief minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah, said on Wednesday.'The stadium has a capacity of only 35,000 people, but 200,000-300,000 people came.' 'Eleven people have died and 33 others are injured,' he said. The incident took place earlier on Wednesday as thousands of fans gathered outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in the state capital, Bengaluru. India's NDTV broadcaster also reported that at least 11 people died. Local TV news channels showed footage of police shifting the injured and those who fell unconscious to ambulances. DK Shivakumar, the deputy chief minister of Karnataka, told reporters that 'the crowd was very uncontrollable'. The event was being held to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru's first IPL title win on Tuesday. Stampedes often happen in India when large crowds gather. In January, at least 30 people were killed as tens of thousands of Hindu devotees rushed to bathe in a sacred river during the Maha Kumbh festival, the world's largest religious gathering.
