Search for leopard intensified after boy killed in Barwani
Barwani: Amidst the silence prevailing after the incident of the killing of an 8-year-old boy by a leopard in the Rajpur subdivision of Barwani district, officials are going all out in their search to prevent any more incidents. Barwani divisional forest officer Ashish Bansod told TOI that various teams from the forest department have been deployed to search for the big cat around the clock. He said that old and new pugmarks of the leopards have been found in the high maize fields connected to the spot, which shows that big cats were roaming here for a few days. He mentioned that four cages and five camera traps have been installed at various locations, and if required, the search will also be conducted with drone cameras. A rescue team has also been sent for necessary action. After the leopard is traced, another rescue team will be called from Indore. Apart from this, instructions have been given to children not to go out and villagers not to go alone at night. On Monday, the villagers created a ruckus outside the post-mortem room of the Community Health Centre of Rajpur. They described the compensation of Rs 8 lakh as insufficient for the loss and demanded it be increased to Rs 1 crore. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Top 3 casino games in Weston-super-mare - No download needed Lounge 777 Play Game Undo Citing the six deaths in wildlife attacks in Limbai village, 5 km from here, in May and June, they demanded more security due to the fear among the villagers. Internet users at risk: Watch your click as crooks eye trends
Kochi: Putting internet users in the city at high risk, cybercriminals are using new tricks to spread APK files and hidden links through messaging apps. This revelation comes after city police busted a major racket that used fake m-Parivahan apps to commit fraud. Investigators said they recovered several similar applications from those arrested, indicating they were conducting multiple such scams. The cyber wing of city police was the first to make an arrest in the m-Parivahan fraud, despite hundreds of complaints being registered in various states where APK files disguised as the official app were being circulated through messaging platforms like WhatsApp. Phones of those who installed the apps were hacked, leading to severe monetary loss. "When we arrested them, we found an array of such APK files. One of them was for installing an app to engage in sex chats, which could then be used for extortion through honey-trapping. Very few victims would file complaints in such cases fearing shame. Another APK file was for bogus KYC updation," said an officer with the cyber wing. City police commissioner Putta Vimaladitya said scamsters were changing tactics depending on what was trending at the time and users must be extremely careful. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "For instance, as time for filing income tax returns approaches, they create an APK file for an app to file I-T returns or to calculate your income tax amount. The moment someone downloads, data gets stolen. Sometimes they take control of the screen, while sometimes only messages. Many aim to take control of applications on the phone," he said. Fresh complaints in m-Parivahan style are becoming fewer while they are coming up with newer things, he added. Another city police officer said there was a surge in bogus links last week over Independence Day. "Since many e-commerce platforms provide offers during this period, scamsters took advantage. Links were sent with similar offers, luring people into sharing their personal details. Such links can be expected during Onam season. Another trend is sending links warning of private photos being online so that users are tempted to check it by clicking the attached link," said an officer. Vimaladitya said verifying such links remains the most effective safeguard against such scams. "It is very unlikely that an official body would send you important official communication through WhatsApp. Even if that happens, everything must be cross-checked — either by directly contacting the office concerned or by visiting authentic websites and writing to them for clarity. For example, If you search for a bank like Federal Bank on Google, fake website links might appear. Instead, search for the original Federal Bank URL, confirm its authenticity and then proceed. This kind of due diligence is essential before making any online transaction," he said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Ahmedabad Rural police seize ambergris worth ₹2.97 crore, two arrested
The Ahmedabad Rural Special Operations Group (SOG) seized 2.97 kg of ambergris, commonly known as sperm whale vomit, worth nearly ₹2.97 crore in the international market and arrested two people during a raid near the Sarkhej–Sanand Highway. Acting on a tip-off, the SOG intercepted two suspects near Gibpura village under Sanand police station limits and recovered 2.976 kg of ambergris, said Om Prakash Jat, Superintendent of Police, Ahmedabad Rural. The seized material, confirmed by forest officials and forensic experts, is estimated to be worth ₹2.97 crore in the international market, he said. Along with the ambergris, two mobile phones and ₹700 in cash were also confiscated from the accused. The arrested men were identified as Yogeshbhai Tulshibhai Makwana (30), a resident of Bhavnagar, and Pantukumaar Bharatbhai Patel (37), a resident of Ahmedabad. During interrogation, they revealed that the ambergris had been supplied by one Bharatbhai Vallabhbhai Sarvaiya of Bhavnagar and they were looking for buyers due to its high market demand, Mr. Jat said. 'Ambergris trade is banned in India as the sperm whale is a Schedule I species under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). This seizure reflects our commitment to curbing illegal wildlife trade,' Mr. Jat said. The accused have been handed over to the Forest Department, Sanand, which has initiated legal proceedings under the Wildlife Protection Act. Ambergris, a rare substance produced in the digestive system of sperm whales, is highly sought after in the international market for its use in perfumes and traditional medicine, despite the global ban on its trade.
