Mohamed Usuf steps up as Kuala Lumpur's acting police chief, pledges safer city
He replaces Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa, who was appointed director of the Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) on June 25.
The handover-of-duties ceremony was held at the Kuala Lumpur contingent police headquarters (IPK) and witnessed by Datuk Hamzah Ahmad, director of Bukit Aman's Integrity and Standards Compliance Department.
Hamzah, in his speech, said the handover-of-duties ceremony was not merely symbolic or an administrative process, but reflected trust, responsibility, and the determination to uphold that trust for the benefit of the people and the nation.
He also congratulated Mohamed Usuf on his appointment as acting Kuala Lumpur police chief until a new chief is named.
'I am confident that with his extensive experience, credibility, and leadership, this contingent will continue to achieve success, maintain stability, and earn the respect of the community,' he said.
Meanwhile, Rusdi, in his speech, expressed his appreciation to the Kuala Lumpur contingent police personnel for their commitment to ensuring the success of various initiatives throughout his more than a year of service.
'I urge them to continue carrying this responsibility with an unwavering spirit. We are not only safeguarding security but also upholding the trust of the community and the future of the nation,' he said.
Earlier, speaking at the Kuala Lumpur police chief's monthly assembly, Rusdi said index crime statistics in Kuala Lumpur for the first six months of this year recorded a 28 per cent drop compared with the same period last year.
'Violent crime decreased by 29 per cent, from 790 cases in 2024 to 563 cases in 2025 for the same period. Property crime also recorded a 27 per cent drop, from 3,377 cases in 2024 to 2,453 cases this year,' he added. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: No arrests were made during the rally here today, a sign of the protest's peaceful nature and the police's professional handling of the event, said Malaysia's top cop. Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail confirmed that the rally, which drew an estimated 18,000 participants, concluded without incident across several key areas in the city. "These areas included Masjid Negara, Kompleks Sogo, Masjid Jamek, Pasar Seni, and Dataran Merdeka. "Despite the large turnout, the entire assembly remained calm and orderly. "No arrests were made throughout the event," he said in a statement today. He said police deployed 3,000 personnel from the Kuala Lumpur police contingent and federal police to monitor security, manage traffic, and facilitate the rally without disrupting public order. "Participants began gathering as early as 10.30am before marching towards Dataran Merdeka by 2pm, where speeches were delivered by several political leaders and non-governmental organisation representatives." Khalid said all enforcement efforts were carried out professionally and ethically, reflecting the police's commitment to a balanced approach in safeguarding both security and democratic freedoms. "Our responsibility is to ensure public safety while allowing space for democratic expression. "Today's peaceful outcome shows that this can be achieved with mutual respect and discipline," he said. KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 (Bernama) -- The rally at Dataran Merdeka today concluded peacefully without any untoward incident with about 18,000 individuals attending. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said they were grateful for the good cooperation shown by participants, who did not create any problems throughout the rally. 'Everything went smoothly, even though there were one or two things that might not have been agreed upon initially, but were resolved well,' he told reporters after the rally ended this evening. He also advised the organisers to be more transparent in sharing information with the authorities in the future to ease security and logistic controls. 'Malaysians have the right to gather, and to gather peacefully. In terms of safety, that's the most important. Sometimes if we don't allow an event, it usually is due to a safety issue, as that is a responsibility of the police,' he said, adding that 3,000 police officers and personnel were mobilised to ensure safety throughout the duration of the rally. Mohamed Usof also said the police would study the speeches delivered by several leaders at the rally, especially if there were elements touching on 3R (religion, race, royalty) or seditious in nature. 'The right to gather peacefully is there, but we are still bound by existing laws. If there are violations, action will be taken according to legal provisions,' he said, adding that there were over 60 reports lodged regarding the rally, mostly by those who disagreed with it being organised. Football federation duped by fake emails claiming Xavi and Guardiola applied for India coaching job
NEW DELHI, July 26 — The All India Football Federation (AIFF) confirmed today that a job application attributed to former Barcelona manager and Spain midfielder Xavi Hernandez for the India head coaching role was a hoax. The AIFF's national team director told The Times of India on Thursday that Xavi's name was on the list of applicants. The report also quoted an AIFF technical committee member saying the his candidacy was deemed too expensive to pursue. 'The AIFF received an email furnishing the applications from Spanish coaches Pep Guardiola and Xavi Hernandez. The authenticity of their applications could not be confirmed, and it has since emerged that the email applications were not genuine,' the AIFF said in a statement. It had not been previously reported that the AIFF had also received an application purporting to be from Manchester City manager Guardiola. The AIFF Technical Committee said it had reviewed 170 applications for the Indian men's head coach role, narrowing the list to 10 before short-listing three candidates. The AIFF sacked former India manger Igor Stimac in June last year before appointing Spaniard Manolo Marquez, who left the job this month and returned to his role as coach of Indian Super League team FC Goa. — Reuters
