India's success formula endures: Let's not falter at this stage

Minta day ago
When the world awoke on 15 August 1947, it found a new independent nation that held out hope for all colonially exploited countries, became an enduring inspiration for the democratic ideal and succeeded remarkably in uniting a diverse population—divided by religion, caste and language—into a coherent political union.
Impoverished by colonial surplus extraction, the Indian landmass had been reduced from one of the richest places on earth to one of the poorest. India's political leadership had to craft an economic policy informed by the nation's capital scarcity, an abundance of untrained labour and widespread incidence of crushing poverty.

Leading members of the private sector also advocated—through the Bombay Plan—that the state bear the primary task of building the nation's core economic structure, which could then become a durable platform for private sector entrepreneurship.
The march of time has shown how the broad idea of India has held firm through famines, droughts, pandemics, global economic crises, wars waged by bitter neighbours and provocations by imperious superpowers, not to mention rifts within the country.

As India celebrates 78 years of independence, new challenges again cast a shadow on our doorstep. Democracy-deficient neighbours have drawn their scimitar to put 'a thousand cuts' of terror back in oblique play to weaken the Indian republic.
Our neighbour across the Himalayas, a rising force to reckon with, shows little patience for democratic methods and might try to dominate the Indo-Pacific. A reliable partner of the past, Russia, is a weakened power and our painstakingly forged friendship with the US is under threat from a reckless White House bent on wrecking global trade and old alliances.
Suspicion of US motives has a long history. It hardened in the 1960s after the Lyndon Johnson administration reneged on its promise of aid after India devalued the rupee on its demand. It grew acute after Richard Nixon sent warships to the Bay of Bengal in 1971 to support a Pakistani general's unjust war. And now, President Donald Trump is not only feting Pakistan's military leaders again, but also trying to browbeat India on trade with punitive tariffs.

We have been in tight spots before and emerged unscathed every time. New Delhi's policy of strategic autonomy, a logical successor of non-alignment during the Cold War, has served the nation well. It is perhaps time to recalibrate this stance to consolidate the time-tested formula of even-handed relations and Panchsheel—or five principles.
In the 35 years since our economy was opened up, India has been a global exemplar of economic growth and poverty reduction. One of the reasons was the visible growth of a middle-class that spent and saved. External trade headwinds should push us to become more competitive, even as we reinforce our policy framework to fortify domestic growth.
Two factors call for special attention. First, multitudes still need access to meaningful education, reliable healthcare and robust sources of income. Second, India Inc must be convinced to invest at home, not overseas, for which corporate investors need to be assured of their investments paying back. We must not allow all-round upward mobility to falter as a generator of growth. As India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru said in his Tryst with Destiny speech, the 'future is not one of ease or resting but of incessant striving…"

Kerala CM Vijayan criticises PM Modi for 'glorifying RSS' in I-Day speech

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of using the country's 79th Independence Day address to glorify the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and V.D. Savarkar. 'It's not acceptable at all as the attempt to project the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and V.D. Savarkar as central figures in India's independence movement. Choosing Independence Day itself to glorify those who compromised with colonial powers is being seen as an insult to the freedom struggle,' Vijayan wrote on social media. He went on to point out that the RSS was banned in the aftermath of Mahatma Gandhi's assassination, while Savarkar himself faced trial in the conspiracy linked to Mahatma Gandhi's murder. 'Associating them with the 'fatherhood of freedom' is a denial of history. PM Modi's Independence Day address, which indirectly valorised the RSS, was a misuse of the solemn occasion. Moreover, the decision of the Union Petroleum Ministry's Independence Day greeting card placing Savarkar's image above Gandhi's is nothing but a part of a larger conspiracy to rewrite history,' added Vijayan. 'India's independence movement was a collective battle, cutting across caste, creed, language, and religion. In contrast, the RSS distanced itself from the movement and openly opposed its ideological foundations. Instead of inclusive Indian nationalism, it promoted a majoritarian Hindutva vision,' added Vijayan. Citing history, Vijayan further pointed out that when the Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution on November 26, 1949, the RSS mouthpiece Organizer editorialised that the Manusmriti should have been the guiding text instead of the Constitution. Similarly, the Hindu Mahasabha under Savarkar had even boycotted the celebrations of August 15, 1947. 'Those who turned their backs on the freedom struggle are now attempting to insert themselves into its history, while sidelining real martyrs, such as those of the Punnapra-Vayalar uprising or the victims of the Wagon Tragedy. Those who call for commemorating Partition horrors on August 14 have little moral standing to lecture the nation on Independence Day,' wrote Vijayan. Vijayan ends his piece by stating that any attempt to replace the legacy of humanism and unity with sectarian hatred must be resisted collectively.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to visit India on Monday

Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister Wang Yi is set to visit India on August 18 (Monday) for the 24th Round of Talks Between the Special Representatives of China and India on the Boundary Question, Beijing confirmed on Saturday. "From August 18 to 20, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Minister of Foreign Affairs and China's Special Representative on the China-India boundary question Wang Yi will visit India and hold the 24th Round of Talks Between the Special Representatives of China and India on the Boundary Question at the invitation of the Indian side," the Chinese Ministry for Foreign Affairs said in a statement. The visit is scheduled to take place shortly before Prime Minister Narendra Modi travels to China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit scheduled to take place at Tianjin, from August 31 to September 1. The Chinese side also welcomed PM Modi's participation in the SCO Summit. At a briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said, "China welcomes Prime Minister Modi to China for the SCO Tianjin Summit. We believe that with the concerted effort of all parties, the Tianjin summit will be a gathering of solidarity, friendship and fruitful results, and the SCO will enter a new stage of high-quality development featuring greater solidarity, coordination, dynamism and productiveness." According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, leaders of over 20 countries, including all member states of the SCO and heads of 10 international organisations, will attend relevant events of the summit, which, Jiakun said, will be the "largest summit in scale since the establishment of the SCO." This will be PM Modi's first visit to China since the Galwan clash in 2020, which severely strained bilateral ties. The breakthrough in bilateral talks, first after the Galwan Valley face-off between the soldiers of the two countries at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in June 2020, was made possible after India and China reached an agreement on patrolling along the nearly 3500-km LAC to end the four-year-long border confrontation. In July, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar visited China to attend the Meeting of the Council of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs in Tianjin. He also held discussions with his Chinese counterpart on the sidelines of the meeting. He also called on Chinese President Xi Jinping, along with his fellow SCO Foreign Ministers. Earlier in June, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited China to attend the SCO Defence Ministers Meeting. India had refused to endorse the joint declaration at the SCO Defence Ministers' meeting, citing the exclusion of concerns around terrorism as a key reason. India stated that it wanted concerns about terrorism reflected in the document, which was not acceptable to one particular country; therefore, the statement was not adopted. During his visit, Singh met his Chinese counterpart, Admiral Don Jun, and the two leaders had a "constructive and forward-looking exchange of views" on issues related to bilateral ties. In June, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval also visited China to attend the 20th Meeting of the SCO Security Council Secretaries. In his intervention at the meeting, he highlighted the need to shun double standards in the fight against terrorism and take decisive actions against UN-proscribed terrorists and entities like LeT, JeM and their proxies and dismantle their terror eco-systems.

Volkswagen dealers offer benefits of up to ₹2.10 Lakh for Ganesh Chaturthi

Select Volkswagen dealerships in India are celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi with special benefits on their popular models. Customers can avail savings of up to ₹ 2.10 lakh on the Taigun SUV, while the Virtus sedan is being offered with benefits of up to ₹ 1.75 lakh. The Virtus is available with two petrol powertrain choices. The 1.0-litre TSI engine produces 113 bhp and 178 Nm, paired with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed torque converter automatic. The larger 1.5-litre TSI motor delivers 148 bhp and 250 Nm, and comes with a six-speed manual or a seven-speed DSG automatic. Rivals: The sedan goes up against the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, and its sibling, the Skoda Slavia. Like the Virtus, the Taigun also offers TSI petrol engines with manual and automatic gearbox choices. Positioned in the compact SUV space, it competes with the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq, and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. Volkswagen is preparing to expand its lineup with the upcoming Tayron SUV, which will take the place of the Tiguan AllSpace in the brand's Indian portfolio. The three-row SUV has already been spotted testing on Indian roads and is expected to arrive by late 2025. Styling cues on the Tayron draw inspiration from the Tiguan R-Line, but the SUV is notably longer by 231 mm, offering more cabin space. The front fascia features sleek LED headlamps, a blacked-out grille, and a mesh-patterned air dam. Globally, it is offered with HD Matrix headlamps equipped with Dynamic Light Assist, boasting 19,000 individually controlled LEDs per unit. A full-width LED strip connects the headlamps and integrates an illuminated VW badge, although feature details for the Indian model will be confirmed closer to launch. Under the hood, the Tayron will house the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine shared with the new Skoda Kodiaq and Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line. This motor generates 200 bhp and 320 Nm, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
