Gauteng's climbing star Luke Westman is ready to wow on world stage
A proud alumnus of Crawford International Lonehill, Westman has qualified for two prestigious International Federation of Sport Climbing World Cups in Bern, Switzerland, and Innsbruck, Austria, representing South Africa and IFSC Africa.
'It is a dream come true,' he said. 'It's an opportunity to showcase not only my dedication and training but also the growing talent and passion for sport climbing within our country. Ultimately, my goal is to perform to the best of my abilities, push my limits, and demonstrate the potential of South African sport climbing on the global stage. Knowing that I am representing my country will be a powerful motivator to strive for excellence in Bern and Innsbruck.'

Westman will take to the walls in Bern, Switzerland, from June 13 to 15, followed by Innsbruck, Austria, from June 25 to 29, an event widely regarded as a highlight on the international climbing calendar.
'I'm ready to embrace the challenge, push my limits, and grow as an athlete among the best in the world.'
In August 2024, Westman earned his Protea Youth Climbing Colours as part of the Youth World Championship Team that competed in China. Now stepping into the senior competitive scene, he's both excited and humbled by the opportunity.

'While there's some pressure, I feel incredibly privileged to represent my country on the world stage.'
Westman, who began climbing at the age of nine, trains up to six days a week at CityROCK in Randburg and shares his expertise by coaching younger climbers at the climbing gym and Crawford International Lonehill Preparatory.
Balancing training, coaching, and competitions, as a young athlete, Westman said he had to juggle his time.

'I've learned some strategies to keep things in sync. I manage my time by mapping out my training sessions, coaching commitments, competitions, and sufficient time for both mental and physical recovery. I also rely on my coaches, family, and friends for support and communicating my schedule and commitments helps them understand my priorities and to provide assistance when needed.
'My message to all the aspiring young climbers in South Africa who might see me as a role model would be to set yourself goals, whether it's sending a specific grade, learning a new technique, or competing at a certain level.'

Springboks' depth on display amid injury concerns to key players
Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus has confirmed changes to his backline for the upcoming Rugby Championship match, with Damian de Allende sidelined and Cheslin Kolbe not yet selected, both due to minor injuries. Erasmus has turned to Andre Esterhuizen and Edwill van der Merwe to step into key roles, citing recent form and squad depth as reasons for the adjustments. De Allende will not feature in this weekend's Springbok lineup due to a back niggle picked up during training. Erasmus confirmed that the experienced midfielder has been managing discomfort for the past two weeks and will continue to train under medical supervision. 'Andre has been strong for us in the last few seasons,' Erasmus said. 'It was an easy decision to name him alongside Jesse in the midfield.' Esterhuizen's physicality and recent consistency make him a reliable choice as South Africa look to build momentum early in the Rugby Championship. On the wing, Cheslin Kolbe has recovered from his own niggle and returned to training. However, the Bok coaches have chosen to give the speedster additional time to build full match readiness. 'Cheslin trained with us last week,' said Erasmus. 'But we decided to exercise caution and give him extra time at training before selecting him.' With Kolbe unavailable, Edwill van der Merwe earns a start after a strong domestic season. His pace and sharp finishing have impressed the coaching staff, and Erasmus is eager to see how he performs at international level. 'Edwill has been in good form this season,' Erasmus said. 'It will be good to see what he brings in this match.' The changes reflect a measured approach from Erasmus, balancing player welfare with the demands of high-intensity competition. Both De Allende and Kolbe are expected to return to selection contention soon, while Esterhuizen and Van der Merwe have the opportunity to make their mark. The Springboks open their campaign with a home fixture against Australia, who arrive on the back of encouraging performances against the British & Irish Lions. Dream start for Betway Premiership newcomers
The first weekend of action in the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season is done and dusted – and what a weekend it was for two of the newcomers to the top-flight! All 16 teams were in action, and there were six matches which produced winners and two drawn fixtures. A total of 15 goals were scored at just under two per match. It was a great weekend for two of the three newcomers to the top-flight with Siwelele FC beating Golden Arrows 3-1, while Gavin Hunt's Durban City beat TS Galaxy 2-0. Siwelele FC bought SuperSport United during the off-season. Coincidentally, former SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt is now in charge at Durban City. Meanwhile, the third new team, Orbit College, went down narrowly 1-0 to AmaZulu. You would have paid good money to have seen Siwelele at the top of the standings at any point in the season! Somewhat surprisingly, defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns were held to a 1-1 draw by Chippa United while Orlando Pirates went down 1-0 at home against Sekhukhune United. On Sunday, Kaizer Chiefs made the perfect start to their campaign, winning 2-0 on the road against Stellenbosch FC. The next matches are scheduled for Tuesday, 12 August. AmaZulu 1-0 Orbit College Chippa United 1-1 Mamelodi Sundowns Polokwane City 0-0 Magesi FC Richards Bay 1-2 Marumo Gallants Orlando Pirates 0-1 Sekhukhune United Siwelele FC 3-1 Golden Arrows TS Galaxy 0-2 Durban City Stellenbosch FC 0-2 Kaizer Chiefs Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 Subscribe to The South African website's newsletters and follow us on WhatsApp, Facebook, X and Bluesky for the latest news.
