PM Modi talks to Putin, reiterates partnership as Trump tariffs loom
Both leaders discussed developments in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and India-Russia bilateral ties, Modi said in a post on X.
'We also reviewed the progress in our bilateral agenda and reaffirmed our commitment to further deepen the India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. I look forward to hosting President Putin in India later this year,' PM Modi said.
The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) later said Modi invited President Putin to India this year for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit.
Putin, Doval meet in Moscow, reiterate cooperation
The call came a day after National Security Adviser Ajit Doval met President Putin in Moscow. Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu and other senior officials were also present.
Following the meeting, both sides reiterated their commitment to strengthening the strategic partnership and enhancing cooperation 'to form a new, more just and sustainable world order'.
'We have now established very good relations, which we value very much — a strategic partnership between our countries,' Doval said after the meeting.
Shoigu added that Russia and India were committed to upholding the supremacy of international law and working together to address contemporary challenges and threats.
Trump's 'dead economies' jibe
US President Donald Trump has criticised the India-Russia relationship, particularly India's purchase of Russian military equipment and crude oil. On July 30, he posted: 'I don't care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care!'
Later that day, he imposed a 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods headed to the US. Hours later, an additional 25 per cent penalty was announced over India's Russian oil imports, taking the total tariff rate to 50 per cent — the highest of any country except Brazil, which faces the same rate.
Brazil's Lula opens a third front
On Thursday, Modi also spoke to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Both leaders agreed to strengthen collaboration in areas including trade, technology, energy, defence, agriculture, health, and cultural exchanges.
PM Modi wrote on X: 'Had a good conversation with President Lula. Thanked him for making my visit to Brazil memorable and meaningful. We are committed to deepening our Strategic Partnership, including in trade, energy, tech, defence, health and more. A strong, people-centric partnership between Global South nations benefits everyone.'
The talks come amid rising global trade tensions, with Trump imposing a 50 per cent tariff on both India and Brazil. Lula has rejected Trump's offer to discuss the tariffs, saying: 'I will call Xi Jinping, I will call Prime Minister Modi. I won't call Putin, because he can't travel now. But I will call many Presidents.'
Visit to China
PM Modi is also scheduled to visit China later this month for the Tianjin summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). During the summit, he is expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss Indo-China ties. Notably, both China and India are among the largest importers of Russian oil.
All these countries—India, China, Russia, and Brazil—are also members of the BRICS organisation, which President Trump has previously described as 'anti-American", accusing it of trying to undermine the dollar's role as the world's key currency.

Modi inaugurates long-delayed Yellow Line, taking Bengaluru's Namma Metro network to 96 km
: Bengaluru's long wait for the Yellow Line of Namma Metro finally ended on Sunday, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 19.15-km corridor linking R.V. Road to Bommasandra. With this, the metro network in the city went up to 96 km. Bengaluru Metro is currently the second-largest metro network in the country after the Delhi Metro, which covers 353.3 km. The Prime Minister also flagged off the Vande Bharat Express between Bengaluru and Belagavi, along with two other Vande Bharat services launched virtually. The Yellow Line, a key metro link connecting the city's IT hub in Electronics City and expected to significantly ease traffic congestion at bottlenecks, such as the Silk Board junction, has been plagued by delays since construction began in 2017. Originally envisioned in the 2011 Detailed Project Report prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), the project was initially scheduled for completion by December 2021. However, setbacks, including protracted land acquisition, disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and delays in rolling stock supply from Chinese manufacturer CRRC Nanjing, pushed the timeline by nearly four years. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) officials expect the Yellow Line to carry over 2.5 lakh passengers daily once the full fleet of trains is delivered and operational. The corridor integrates with major metro lines at key junctions: R.V. Road (Green Line), Jayadeva Hospital (Pink Line), and Central Silk Board (Blue Line, Phases 2A & 2B). According to officials, the maximum fare on the Yellow Line, which will start revenue services from Monday, will be ₹60. Packed schedule of PM Mr. Modi arrived in Bengaluru on Sunday morning at HAL Airport and then travelled by helicopter to the Indian Air Force Training Command in the city, where he was received by Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Covering 611 km in just 8 hours and 30 minutes, the new train reduces travel time by about 1 hour and 20 minutes from KSR Bengaluru to Belagavi, and by around 1 hour and 40 minutes on the return trip, making it a faster and more convenient option compared to existing trains, according to railway officials. Following the event, the Prime Minister proceeded to Ragigudda Metro Station to inaugurate the Yellow Line. There, he flagged off the inaugural service, tried out the QR code-enabled ticket vending machines, and boarded the metro to Electronics City. Speaking to The Hindu, a BMRCL official said the train was piloted by a woman loco pilot. 'Schoolchildren, metro officials, and some members of the public were also onboard, and Mr. Modi interacted with them during the journey,' the official said. Namma Metro's Phase 3 At the end of his metro ride to Infosys Foundation Konappana Agrahara Metro Station, the Prime Minister went to the IIIT Auditorium in Electronics City Phase 1. There, he laid the foundation stone for Namma Metro's Phase 3, also known as the Orange Line, and addressed a gathering. The Phase 3 will be fully elevated and is planned to serve underserved areas along Magadi Road and the western portion of the Outer Ring Road. Once completed in 2029, it is projected to accommodate 7.85 lakh commuters daily and will extend Bengaluru's metro network to 222.2 km, according to BMRCL officials. The project has cleared all mandatory hurdles, receiving Union Cabinet approval in August 2024.

Judiciary, legislature, executive united for speedy, affordable justice: CJI BR Gavai
Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai said on Sunday that the judiciary, legislature, and executive are committed to serve the people and ensure speedy justice with least cost and efforts. Inaugurating the newly-constructed court building of Gauhati High Court , Itanagar permanent bench here, the CJI said, "The sole object of the judiciary, legislature, and executive is to serve the people. We all exist to give speedy and due justice to the people," Gavai said, and praised successive Chief Justices of the Gauhati High Court for making justice more accessible to the people. He said that despite facing several crises over the past 75 years after Independence, the nation has remained strong, united, and is on the path to becoming a developed country. Highlighting Arunachal Pradesh 's unity in diversity, CJI Gavai added that the Northeastern state has 26 major tribes and over 100 sub-tribes. The government has taken all-out efforts to preserve, protect and promote the traditional culture and customs of each tribe, he said. Progress of the country and protection and preservation of culture and traditions can go simultaneously for further strengthening the country, he said, adding that the Constitution also envisaged and emphasised to preserve and conserve the culture of all people and community. Gavai said: "During our recent visit to Manipur, a woman there told me, 'You are welcome to your home'. It touched all of us, reminding us that India is one, and for all Indians, India is the home for all." The Chief Justice also said that the Northeast region is one of the most important parts of India, and informed that the Constitution provides special provisions to preserve and safeguard the tribal communities of the region. Referring to B.R. Ambedkar, the CJI added that Ambedkar always fought for the unity of India and he always said, 'India first and India last'. Ambedkar for all time told the people that the Constitution would keep India united and strong in times of peace and war and that was experienced even after 75 years, CJI Gavai said. "Each religion has its own 'dharma granth' (religious scripture), but for every Indian, the Constitution is the great 'granth'. Our foremost loyalty should be to the Constitution. Everyone must read the constitution," the CJI said. Speaking at the event, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu said the inauguration of the Gauhati High Court, Itanagar Permanent Bench building marks a major landmark in strengthening the state's justice delivery system, promising faster and more efficient access to justice to the people. "Until 2016, Arunachal Pradesh had only two courts and currently the state now has 33 functional district and session courts and the state Cabinet recently approved eight more courts along with 463 new posts created for the district level judiciary," the Chief Minister added. Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju advocated to further strengthen the judicial infrastructure, especially in the lower judiciary to ensure the swift, and people-friendly justice accessible to all. Highlighting the reforms of the Union government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Rijiju told that more than 1,500 redundant and obsolete laws, framed during the British period, have been abolished as they created unnecessary problems for common people and the governments.
