Loke: Protest tomorrow if you wish, just take the train

Malay Mail25-07-2025
KUALA LUMPUR, July 25 — Transport Minister Anthony Loke has encouraged participants of tomorrow rally at Dataran Merdeka to use public transport to reduce congestion in the city centre.
He said all public transport services including trains will continue operating as usual on the day.
Loke stressed that the Madani government upholds the right to peaceful assembly, even for groups opposed to the administration.
'We must not return to an era that suppressed democracy to the point of shutting down Parliament,' he said.
He added that public transport must keep running to ensure that the majority of Malaysians can carry out their weekend plans without disruption.
Loke took the opportunity to remind Klang Valley users that the subsidised MY50 travel pass can now be renewed online via the Touch 'n Go app.
He also highlighted the RM6 MyCity Pass, which offers unlimited daily travel on LRT, MRT, BRT, Monorail and Rapid Bus services, and will be digitised by year-end.
The minister urged all rally-goers to ride public transport and help ease traffic flow in the capital.

Bold rail initiative to reduce road congestion

PETALING JAYA: Transport Minister Anthony Loke has reaffirmed the government's pledge to shift the country's freight and passenger movement from road to rail – a strategic move under the Road to Rail initiative outlined in the 13MP. In a video shared on his official Facebook page, Loke said the government is prioritising the development of rail infrastructure to reduce heavy reliance on lorries for cargo transport, particularly between industrial zones and ports. 'When cargo volumes increase, lorry traffic also increases on the road, causing congestion and raising the risk of accidents. The solution is to transport cargo via train directly from factories to ports.' Loke said the government will invest in both new railway lines and rolling stock, with over 200 new train sets to be procured under the 13MP, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. 'The new trains will enhance services for both commuters and cargo operators.' Among the reforms is a new leasing model for acquiring trains – a mechanism designed to speed up procurement without requiring full upfront payment. 'The model includes long-term maintenance in the package, which helps address long-standing issues involving spare parts and servicing delays. 'In the past, when components failed, we had trouble replacing them. We'd end up cannibalising parts from other trains. With leasing, maintenance is assured.' Loke also outlined plans to strengthen the domestic rail manufacturing industry. The existing train assembly plant in Batu Gajah, Perak, will be developed into a national rail production hub. He said this would open up new opportunities for local industry players and generate high-skilled employment. 'Just like expanding a food stall into a restaurant, this is how we plan to grow the country's transport capacity and economic competitiveness.' Loke also assured that existing public transport support programmes – including the My50 unlimited travel pass, free stage bus services and flight subsidies for students travelling between Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia – will continue.

KLIA immigration corruption, malpractice issues among Dewan Rakyat's focus today

KUALA LUMPUR: The comprehensive resolution of corruption and malpractice issues involving the Immigration at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), following the exposure of the Fly and U-turn syndicates, will be among the highlights of today's Dewan Rakyat sitting. According to the Order Paper on the official Parliament website, Lee Chean Chung (PH-Petaling Jaya) will raise the issue with the Home Minister during the question and answer session. He will also inquire about the timeline for resolving these issues. During the session, Rushdan Rusmi (PN-Padang Besar) will question the Minister of Transport on the guidelines for approving special vehicle registration plates, including those issued by government agencies and private entities, as well as the revenue generated from such sales in the past five years. Chow Kon Yeow (PH-Batu Kawan) will seek clarification from the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation on improving the annual distribution of flood management funds, as opposed to one-off allocations. He will also ask about efforts to establish a dedicated system for river maintenance and control asset management, similar to the Malaysian Road Records Information System (MARRIS). In addition, Datuk Ali Biju (PN-Saratok) will ask the Communications Minister on the government's plans for expanding the Integrated Radio and Internet Communication System (PRIME) in Sabah and Sarawak, and its coordination with government agencies for disaster preparedness. Following this, Members of Parliament will participate in a debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), themed 'Melakar Semula Pembangunan, which was tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last Thursday. The 13MP will outline the nation's five-year development plan from 2026 to 2030. The current Dewan Rakyat sitting runs for 24 days until Aug 28.
