Genesis GMR-001 Le Mans Hypercar's V8 Is Two Turbocharged Rally Car Engines Stuck Together

Yahoo11-03-2025
It's pretty rare to see a genuinely new engine get developed these days even for race cars, especially from smaller automakers that don't have as big of a motorsport presence, so it was shocking when Genesis announced that its upcoming Le Mans Hypercar would be powered by a V8 engine. The Hyundai Motor Group hasn't made a V8 since 2021 when the Tau engine was discontinued, so would the company be coming up with a totally new motor for its GMR-001? Well, not exactly. Genesis Magma Racing team principal Cyril Abiteboul revealed that the LMDh racer's V8 was created by sticking two WRC-derived turbocharged four-cylinder engines together.
Hyundai has competed in the World Rally Championship for the past 12 years, winning the manufacturer's trophy in 2019 and 2020, and Abiteboul was team principal since January 2023 and president since January 2024, so the move makes sense. Abiteboul says the decision to fuse the WRC engines together was largely due to timing and so Genesis wouldn't have to design something new from scratch:
Anyone who knows about engines will appreciate that we only had six months to develop a complete engine. We elected to go with a V-8, precisely because the V-8 was a great opportunity not to have to redesign a complete engine from scratch and instead take inspiration from our [Hyundai Motor Group's] existing WRC [World Rally Championship] engine, a very competitive 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four that we've been using for several years. We took that engine and made it two times four in line, which gives us a V-8.
Those WRC motors make around 380 horsepower, though without restrictions that figure could surely be boosted up. Current WRC cars are hybrids, all using a spec motor that adds an extra 134 horsepower, but that system won't get carried over in the creation of the V8 as LMDh cars have their own spec hybrid system that uses a 67-hp electric motor. Genesis is also working with famed racing constructor Oreca on the GMR-001's development.

We were in a dearth of cool top-end Le Mans race car designs following Audi's dominating diesel era, but with the LMDh and LMH classes we're finally seeing some wild designs again, and the Genesis might be the best looking one yet. Asked about the relationship between design and performance, Abiteboul said the two go hand-in-hand:
One of the most famous French aero designers used to say that a nice airplane flies well, too. And I tend to believe that. Sometimes, technical regulations can induce you to design cars that are not necessarily very nice-looking because they are extremely sophisticated. I keep thinking of Formula One because that's where I spent the largest part of my life. There was a period of time when cars were packed with aerodynamic surfaces: lots of wing legs, shark legs and so on and so forth. But in the end, I believe there is no opposition between aesthetics and functionality. In any case, the car that wins is always the more beautiful one.
Abiteboul added that maintaining Genesis' Korean identity is important for the Magma team. That's not just in terms of design (the Magma logo is even a reference to Korean characters), but in how quickly the GMR-001 is coming together. Since its initial debut in Dubai in December Genesis has only shown renderings and a half-scale model of the GMR-001 so far, but the real thing will be unveiled in April before testing begins in August, and it'll be racing in early 2026. "By all standards, we really compressed the timing of what is normally done to an extreme, because we also want to show the speed of Korean culture — or what I'd like to call, Genesis hyperspeed," said Abiteboul.
When the GMR-001 hits the track in the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship season, it'll be up against competitors from Acura, Alpine, BMW, Cadillac and Porsche — Lamborghini has canceled its WEC Hypercar entrant, but Ford will be joining in 2027. Genesis will then join the IMSA SportsCar Championship for the 2027 season. The company will be fielding two cars in each.

Hyundai Motor Group Hosts Pleos SDV Standard Forum to Drive Software-Defined Vehicle Era through Collaboration

Hyundai Motor Group aims to lead the SDV era with its partners, addressing rapid industry shifts and accelerating the transition to a software-focused paradigm The forum introduces a new collaboration model to drive innovation across the value chain and establish a software-centric ecosystem for SDV development The Group presents a technology roadmap to drive SDV innovation and establish an aligned supply chain based on the values of speed, transparency and trust The event features keynote speeches and technical sessions addressing topics, such as: E&E architecture, vehicle OS and security, diagnostics and standardization SEOUL, South Korea, Aug. 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Hyundai Motor Group (the Group) has reinforced its leadership in the software-defined vehicle (SDV) era by sharing the latest technology standards and software development system with its key partners, strengthening the foundation for collaboration. Today, the Group hosted the 'Pleos SDV Standard Forum' at the Software Dream Center in Pangyo, Korea. The event brought together core engineering leaders from 58 key partners, including Hyundai Mobis, Hyundai Kefico, Bosch, Continental, HL Mando, and other vehicle control system specialists. This forum, held as the automotive industry undergoes a major shift from hardware to software-centric development, aimed to accelerate the transition to SDVs. It serves as a way to transform supply chains and enhance the industry's adaptability to this transformation. "Close collaboration with key partners and the widespread adoption of standardized development frameworks are essential for implementing SDVs," said Chang Song, President and Head of the Advanced Vehicle Platform (AVP) Division at Hyundai Motor Group. "We will continue to establish a software-driven collaborative network by distributing technical standards and building a supply chain system for SDV mass production." Unlike traditional hardware-based vehicles, SDVs are defined as platforms capable of ongoing updates and feature expansions even after delivery. Achieving mass production of SDVs requires a complete reorganization of development environments across all areas, including component suppliers, software developers and specialists in diagnostics, security and verification. To support this shift, standardized frameworks and collaborative ecosystems are essential. Through the forum, the Group shared the latest technical standards and development frameworks required for the SDV transition, enabling the establishment of a software-centric collaboration system to accelerate industry advancements. The forum began with a keynote speech from President Song and featured five key sessions, including: Transitioning vehicle development methods for SDV mass production. Applying CODA[1] (Computing & I/O Domain-based E&E Architecture) for developing optimized hardware and flexible software architecture. Facilitating vehicle software development based on the Pleos Vehicle OS. Establishing a standardized, scalable framework for external devices (Plug & Play). Developing integrated software tools to foster collaboration between OEMs and suppliers. These sessions expanded on the strategies presented at the 'Pleos 25' developer conference in March. Executives and technical leaders from Hyundai Motor, Kia and 42dot — the Group's global software center — presented strategies to address the challenges of the SDV transition and engaged in panel discussions and Q&A interactions. One key highlight was the introduction of a standardized software development framework to support SDV development. This framework provides detailed guidelines for partners to adopt it within their own development environments and covers the entire development process — from defining specifications to feature validation, issue management and tracking outputs. A standout feature is the ability for the Group and its partners to securely connect and share development data in real time, ensuring seamless collaboration while maintaining data security. The adoption of this standardized framework is expected to significantly enhance the efficiency and quality of software development by integrating the expertise of various partners working on vehicle control units. Moreover, this transition marks a shift from the traditional hardware-focused vertical supply chain to a software-driven, horizontally integrated collaboration model. It is anticipated to form the critical infrastructure for large-scale SDV production. Through this forum, the Group aims to support its partners in discovering new business opportunities aligned with the SDV era. It plans to continue operating regular forums, sharing technical roadmaps, and accelerating the transformation of development environments through ongoing collaboration. At the 'Pleos 25' developer conference in March, the Group launched its integrated software platform brand 'Pleos', unveiling plans for an in-vehicle app ecosystem and global partnerships to advance its transformation into a software-first mobility tech company. Test-Driving The 2025 Genesis Electrified GV70

Three years on from the model's reveal, Genesis has updated the Electrified GV70 for 2025. Its curb appeal remains strong accompanied by a refreshed interior featuring an impressively crisp 27-inch screen on the dashboard. In place of the separate infotainment screen, the instrument binnacle has been integrated into the display in a sleek statement piece. Jonny Miller, brand director for Genesis Motor UK, said, 'The facelift version of the Electrified GV70 kicks off our move to refresh our entire electric vehicle line up for 2025. Expanding the Electrified GV70 line-up to three trims means we can now encompass a wider remit of customer convenience and boutique trim possibilities.' What Is The 2025 Genesis Electrified GV70 Like To Drive? Despite sharing the same DNA as its engine-powered GV70 turbocharged sibling, the Electrified GV70 has a completely different personality. Its electric powertrain generates barely any sound and delivers over 400 bhp in an instant. For its maximum 483 bhp, a boost button on the steering wheel unleashes everything it has for 10 seconds. As part of the latest update, Genesis swapped out the 77kWh battery for an 84kWh unit which ups range in the entry-level version to 298 miles. Both Dynamic and Luxury trims which sit on larger 20-inch wheels have an official range of 287 miles. Although all models can comfortably achieve more than 250 miles, range seems low compared to the likes of the Porsche Macan Electric and the Audi Q6 e-tron. Genesis remedies any range anxiety concerns with the capacity to accept charging at speeds up to 240kW. Using ultra fast charging, the Electrified GV70 can charge from 10 to 80% in just 19 minutes. The charging port is neatly disguised in the front grille, so much so, I paced around the car three times before resorting to looking for a video online to work out where it was. Like the rest of the Genesis range, technology is a strong point with useful aids like a blind spot camera which pops up on the screen every time you use the indicator. A configurable button on the dash can be set up to easily turn off over enthusiastic assistance systems. On the road, the extra weight of the battery is not as noticeable as it is in the Lotus Electre, for example. Instead, the Electrified GV70 feels confident in its movements offering a smooth ride at any speed. Its electric power means it's quick to pull away when you need it to but for the most part, gentle inputs create a relaxing experience. What Is The 2025 Genesis Electrified GV70 Like Inside? Most manufacturers targeting the luxury segment typically tie interior descriptions to wellness topics. On the surface, this wellness rhetoric doesn't always make much sense but sitting in the Electrified GV70, the concept is crystal clear. Through a mixture of materials, intuitive controls and a well insulated cabin, as soon as you shut the door, a relaxed hush falls over the interior. In the top trim Luxury example I tried, it featured a backlit constellation pattern on the inner surface of the arm rests in the doors. The color syncs with the ambient lighting just below the beltline creating a cohesive interior theme. Atop the dash, a single sweeping unit houses the driver's display and infotainment system which can be used as a touchscreen or controllable with a rotary dial and shortcut buttons. From a passenger perspective, there's ample leg room and a central armrest when just two passengers are travelling in the back. For long trips boot space can be a bit limited. Compared to other SUVs in this category, the Electrified GV70's boot feels quite shallow due to the high boot floor and low parcel shelf. It's easy to open up more luggage space with a quick pull of the rear seat release levers in the boot. How Much Does the 2025 Genesis Electrified GV70 Cost? In the UK, the latest version of the Electrified GV70 is available in three different trim options: Pure, Dynamic and Luxury. The US market has the choice of AWD, Advanced AWD and Prestige AWD. The entry-level trim starts from £66,000 or $64,000 depending on which side of the pond you reside. Expect to pay from £71,000 or $69,000 for the middle trim and 75,000 of your preferred currency for the top-spec version. Like any accomplished luxury brand countless extras can be specified when you order a Genesis Electrified GV70. This can be as simple as body and brake caliper colors right the way through to comfort packages. Genesis Electrified GV70 Technical Specification Price as tested: £81,185 ($109,660) Battery: 84 kWh Range: 287 miles Power: 483 bhp Torque: 516 lb-ft 0-62 mph: 4.2 secs Top speed: 146 mph
