Egypt, Thailand hold 7th round of political consultations in Cairo
The Egyptian side was headed by Assistant Foreign Minister for Asian, Australian, New Zealand, and Pacific Affairs Ahmed Shaheen, while the Thai delegation was headed by Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs in Thailand Russ Jalichandra.
The two sides discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations at political, economic, cultural, and parliamentary levels, as well as ways to promote trade exchange, increase investment volume, and enhance cooperation between the business communities in Egypt and Thailand in a way that would serve the interests of both countries and contribute to strengthening joint trade and economic relations, particularly in the fields of textiles, electronics, the automotive industry, food industries, and pharmaceuticals.
They also discussed cooperation between the Suez Canal Economic Zone and Thai companies.
The two sides underlined the importance of activating the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in December 2024 to establish a joint trade committee and a joint action plan for economic cooperation.
At the conclusion of the consultations, they agreed to continue coordination over issues of mutual interest to develop relations between Egypt and Thailand to broader horizons at all levels. (MENA)

The leaders reportedly discussed joint defense initiatives, counter-terrorism efforts, and regional cooperation mechanisms. Defense analyst Umair Aslan, speaking to Defense Arabia, highlighted the significant opportunity for Egypt to benefit from Pakistan's growing defense industry. Over the past two decades, Pakistan has emerged as a credible and cost-effective defense supplier, offering viable alternatives to traditional Western sources. According to Aslan, one of the most appealing options for Egypt could be the JF-17 Thunder multirole fighter, co-developed by Pakistan and China. The lightweight, versatile, and affordable aircraft could help modernize Egypt's air fleet without the heavy political strings or financial costs often associated with US or French jets. Despite its lower cost, the JF-17 boasts modern avionics, weapon systems, and air superiority capabilities, making it a practical choice for flexible air defense. In terms of ground forces, Aslan suggested that Pakistan's "Al-Khalid" and "Al-Zarrar" main battle tanks may also be of interest to Egypt. The Al-Khalid, equipped with Chinese and Pakistani technology, offers strong engine performance and advanced targeting systems. Meanwhile, the Zarrar is a low-cost modernization option for older tanks—something Egypt may explore, especially as it aims to enhance local manufacturing capabilities. While Pakistan's ballistic missile systems may not be Egypt's primary focus, anti-ship and conventional surface-to-surface missile systems developed by Pakistan could be valuable additions to Egypt's arsenal, particularly as Cairo looks to build a cost-effective and adaptable defense posture. What makes this evolving relationship noteworthy is that both countries appear willing to move beyond simple arms transactions. Egypt, Uganda strengthen water cooperation, address Nile governance
Egypt's Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Water Resources met on Tuesday with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni to discuss bilateral water cooperation, ongoing development projects, and shared concerns over Nile River governance, the Ministry of Water Resources said. The meeting was also attended by Uganda's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Henry Oryem, and Minister of State for Environment, Beatrice Anywar. Water Resources Minister Hani Sewilam praised the historic ties between Egypt and Uganda, emphasising the importance of closer coordination on sustainable water resource management to support both nations' development goals. He reiterated Egypt's stance on the Nile, stressing that all riparian states must respect international law on transboundary watercourses, with cooperation grounded in mutual benefit and legal frameworks as the basis for stability and prosperity. Sewilam acknowledged Uganda's role in the consultative process among countries that have not ratified the Nile Basin Cooperative Framework Agreement (CFA) and highlighted Egypt's $100m financing mechanism for infrastructure and development projects in southern Nile Basin states. Talks reviewed joint initiatives, including the drilling of 75 groundwater wells and rainwater harvesting tanks in Ugandan districts, flood mitigation works in Kasese District completed in 2018, and the 25-year-old aquatic weed control programme in Lakes Victoria, Kyoga, and Albert, which has improved ecosystems and generated biogas from invasive plants. The two sides are preparing to sign a new $6m memorandum of understanding on integrated water resources management under the Egyptian-led Nile Basin Development Initiative.

Egypt's PM reviews efforts to advance agricultural fertiliser industry
Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly on Tuesday chaired a meeting to review efforts to advance the country's agricultural fertiliser industry and its distribution system, his office said in a statement. Madbouly stressed the government's continuous interest in developing vital industrial sectors, including fertilisers, given their importance in meeting local needs amid the country's agricultural expansion. The meeting was attended by the ministers of industry, military production, finance, agriculture, public business sector, investment, and petroleum, as well as the head of the Consumer Protection Agency and other officials. The prime minister highlighted the facilities provided to support the fertiliser industry and attract more investment, which contributes to increasing production to meet local demand and positively impacts agricultural productivity, helping to achieve food security goals. He also pointed to the potential for exporting surplus fertilisers and opening new international markets. Madbouly noted the importance of continuously developing the fertiliser industry to keep pace with global advancements in modern agricultural techniques, which require specialised and advanced fertilisers to increase production and apply sustainable farming practices. According to a government spokesperson, the meeting reviewed the efforts of various entities to advance the industry to achieve greater self-sufficiency and export the surplus. It also addressed the development and modernisation of the fertiliser distribution system to ensure it reaches eligible farmers and prevents leakages of support to non-beneficiaries. In this regard, the prime minister emphasised the importance of continuing to govern the distribution system, expanding the mechanisation of services, and continuing to purge agricultural records of 'ghost' holdings. This, he said, would tighten control over fertiliser distribution from the factory to the eligible farmers.
