
Farmers need to be ‘sun smart' to reduce skin cancer risk
The sun can be strong enough to cause sun damage from the start of April to the end of September in Ireland, according to the HSE.
Whether you're out in the fields, heading to the beach, grabbing a coffee or relaxing in the garden, it is important to use sun protection each day between April to September, even on cloudy days.
Minister of State for public health, wellbeing and the National Drugs Strategy, Jennifer Murnane O'Connor said: 'Being active outdoors is good for our health and wellbeing, but everyone needs to be aware that exposure to the sun can be very harmful if we're not appropriately protected.
'I am encouraging everyone to take action to enjoy the sun safely and reduce their risk of skin cancer. It's very simple, just follow the five Healthy Ireland SunSmart steps whether you're at home or abroad. Your skin will thank you for it.'
Skin cancer risk
To reduce skin cancer risk, it is important to protect your skin when outside, especially from April to September when UV rays from the sun are strongest.
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in Ireland, with over 11,000 cases annually. Yet in most cases, skin cancers could be prevented, according to the HSE.
Data from the National Cancer Registry of Ireland (NCRI) show that over 1,200 cases of melanoma, which is the most serious form of skin cancer, are diagnosed in Ireland every year.
This figure is projected to rise to over 3,000 cases per year by 2045.
Specialist in public health medicine at the HSE's NCCP, Dr. Breeda Neville said: 'Melanoma skin cancer is strongly linked to intermittent, high-intensity UV radiation exposure which can occur during outdoor recreational activities like sunbathing or water sports, or if you use a sunbed.
'The more time you spend unprotected in the sun, the more UV damage your skin is exposed to which increases your risk of skin cancer, including the deadliest form – melanoma. Follow the SunSmart 5 S's whether at home or abroad this summer.'
Almost nine in 10 cases of skin cancer could be prevented by following the Healthy Ireland SunSmart 5 S's to protect your skin:

As well as the 5 S's the HSE has said that it is important to remember not to deliberately try to get a suntan. Avoid getting a sunburn and never use a sunbed.
Patient advocate for the 2025 SunSmart campaign, Jacinta O'Brien is raising awareness of the importance of skin protection: 'I was diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer when I was 38. I've had three surgeries, targeted treatment, immunotherapy and radiotherapy.
'While I feel that I was quite safe with the sun obviously being fair skinned, I do know that in my early 20s I was at many concerts and festivals and days out where I probably wasn't as good as I should be in applying sunscreen.
'When you're younger you think you're invincible and you don't think it's ever going to be you. You don't need to have prolonged exposure to the sun to get skin cancer.
'It's so important to sit in the shade where possible, cover up with clothing and apply sunscreen on exposed skin to protect yourself even when you do think it may be overcast.'

HSE has helped just 104 younger people move out of nursing homes for the elderly
THE HSE'S PROGRAMME to help younger people transition out of nursing homes has helped just 104 people move into alternative settings, with hundreds more left languishing in care homes designed for older people. Efforts to reduce the cohort of people aged under 65 living in nursing homes are facing obstacles as the HSE has said that after an initial decrease, the numbers have now 'plateaued'. There are still 1,227 people aged under 65 living in nursing homes for older people according to HSE figures given in July of this year. The programme to help younger people move out of nursing homes was set up in response to the 2021 Wasted Lives report by the Ombudsman, which found serious problems in how they were being treated. A team that tracked the issue within the HSE in 2023 found the main reason for people under 65 entering nursing homes that year was due to referrals from acute healthcare settings, typically a hospital. This led to 136 people being placed in nursing homes that year. The next biggest reason was the lack of an alternative appropriate placement (135 cases). Family circumstances, referral from community services, and a lack of a primary carer were other factors that the team found. For 32 cases that year, the reason for the younger being entered into the care of a nursing home was only recorded as 'unknown'. Acquired brain injury is the primary diagnosis for more than one quarter (26%) of all younger people living in a nursing home, according to data provided by an operational tracker which looks at younger people in nursing homes. This is followed by acquired neurological conditions, such as multiple sclerosis, which account for 24% of people in this group. Other people have conditions including cerebral palsy and spina bifida, or in some cases an intellectual disability. Social Democrats TD Liam Quaide, who requested these figures from the HSE, said that the process of transferring younger people out of inappropriate nursing home settings is 'frustratingly slow'. 'This is a desperately sad and indefensible situation. It is another example of how much distance is opening up between our economic prosperity, on the one hand, and the vindication of disabled people's basic rights, on the other. 'Perpetuating younger people's reliance on nursing homes is an affront to their dignity and right to independence,' Quaide said. The Social Democrats TD said that nursing homes are also being used for temporary care for people awaiting a placement in the National Rehabilitation Hospital. Advertisement He pointed out that four years have now passed since the publication of the Wasted Lives report. That initial report was sparked by the Ombudsman receiving a number of complaints from people under 65 who were living in nursing homes at that time. The office carried out 28 visits to people affected by the issue. It found that Ireland has a long way to go in terms of moving from a medical to a social model of disability. As of 30 June 2020 there were some 1,320 people under 65 being supported by the Nursing Homes Support Scheme (the Fair Deal scheme) according to HSE figures. Slow pace of transition In response to the report the HSE set up its U65 Programme Office and an Implementation Project Team. There is an 'U65′ lead in each Community Healthcare Organisation who is responsible for people transitioning to other care settings. Since this work began there have been a total of 104 transitions. The majority of these people have moved to community residential placements including sheltered living, specialised and residential placements, to their own home or family home, or to a new home. It is expected that 17 other people will transfer out of nursing homes before the end of 2025. The HSE said that people who need to stay in nursing homes can avail of enhanced quality of life supports funded by the U65 programme which include access to personal devices, transport, social care, and vocational and therapeutic services, as well as personal assistant hours. However the number of people availing of these supports are very low. In 2024 just 154 of the people who are under 65 living in nursing homes availed of the supports package. The HSE said that there was a decrease in this age group residing in nursing homes between 2021 and 2023, when there was a decrease of around 100 people, but since then the average number of under-65s in nursing homes per month has 'plateaued' to an average of 1,250 people. The HSE's programme provides funding to help people in this cohort transfer to other settings, and the average cost of these transfers is €207,926. The HSE has said that the primary reason why younger people are staying in nursing homes is due to their personal will and preference. 'Disability services recognise that the issue of will and preference is changeable and that there needs to be planned engagements with individuals to better understand their reasons why they may wish to stay,' a spokesperson said. Profits at Novartis Ireland down to €8.4m as firm raises research and development spend
New accounts filed by Novartis Ireland Ltd show the company recorded the drop in pre-tax profits as revenues declined by 10pc from €268.3m to €242.3m. Novartis Ireland is a significant employer in the healthcare industry here with over 1,000 employed in Dublin. Accounts show revenues from the sale of goods declined from €139.86m to €137.55m while revenues from supply of business services decreased from €128.46m to €104.77m. The directors state that revenues declining in pharma products sales were due to price and volume erosion of mature products. Turnover relating to Novartis Corporate Centre (NOCC) services decreased by 18pc driven primarily by the reduction in functions related to Novartis's global initiative which launched in 2022 targeting a more focused pharmaceutical offering. The company has a significant R&D arm in Ireland with numbers employed last year increasing from 224 to 270. Last year, Novartis Ireland increased R&D spend from €26.4m to €34.9m. And the company booked an R&D credit of €4.5m in the profit and loss account. Overall numbers employed at Novartis Ireland Ltd reduced from 1,024 to 1,010 last year. The company employed 663 in 'general and administration', 72 in marketing, sales and distribution and five in production and supply. ADVERTISEMENT Staff costs last year declined from €138.8m to €123.98m, that included €95.5m in wages and salaries and €4.7m in share-based payments. Directors' pay increased from €992,000 to €1.35m made up of €1.27m in emoluments and €76,000 in pension contributions. During the year, the company launched two new medicines aimed at treating cancer, Luxturna and Leqvio. Under the heading of patient expiration and product competition, the directors state that 'the Irish Government continues to closely monitor pharmaceutical pricing and profitability, with pressure to control spending on HSE medicines'. Shareholder funds totalled €88.8m, that included accumulated profits of €51.9m.

THE HSE has issued a reminder over a bacterial infection caught outdoors that can lead to serious illness. Most cases occur in the summer and autumn and it is easy to treat if it's diagnosed early. These are small brown bugs whose bite can cause Lyme disease. It is an illness caused by borrelia bacteria following a bite from an infected tick. Taking to X, formerly Twitter, they said: "#LymeDisease is a bacterial infection that can be spread to humans by infected ticks. "Most people with early symptoms of Lyme disease develop a circular red skin rash around a tick bite." The condition can affect anyone but is most common amongst those who spend time in grassy or heavily wooded areas or are in contact with certain animals like deer and sheep. Only a small number of individuals will develop Lyme disease following a tick bite. However, early identification of Lyme disease with prompt and appropriate antibiotic therapy is important to minimise the likelihood of the development of late stage infection. The rash can appear up to three months after being bitten by a tick and most rashes appear within the first four weeks. The major symptoms of 'common cancer' as HSE say 'know the signs' It usually lasts for several weeks and not everyone with the illness gets the rash. The rash can look like a bull's-eye on a dartboard, and the skin is usually red and the edges may feel slightly raised. MAJOR SYMPTOMS In the early stages you may also have flu-like symptoms such as: feeling hot and shivery, or a high temperature headaches muscle and joint pain tiredness and loss of energy Mood changes and anxiety. Health chiefs advise those bitten to remove ticks as soon as possible as Lyme disease can be prevented if infected ticks are removed within 36 hours. In Ireland, about five per cent of ticks are thought to carry Lyme disease bacteria. And high-risk areas can include sand dunes, grassy and wooded areas. HOW TO REMOVE TICKS Tick bites are not always painful. You may not notice a tick unless you see it on your skin. You should check your skin after being outdoors. Also check your children for ticks, especially their head and hairline. Pets can carry the ticks and need to be checked as well. Use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick-removal tool. You can buy these from some pharmacies, vets and pet shops. Here are three steps to removing a tick safely: Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible. Slowly pull upwards, taking care not to squeeze or crush the tick - dispose of it carefully. Clean the bite with antiseptic or soap and water. Most people with Lyme disease get better after antibiotic treatment.
