The series that lasted a year: Why India's 2021 tour of England was halted midway

As Team India prepare to face England in a five-match Test series, starting June 20, echoes of the dramatic 2021 series remain loud in memory — not just for its thrilling cricket, but for the extraordinary disruption that saw the final match delayed by nearly a year.
The 2021 series, much like the one ahead, marked the beginning of a new ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle and began soon after the inaugural WTC Final between India and New Zealand, which the Kane Williamson-led team won at the Rose Bowl in Southampton.
The India-England series began in August 2021 but concluded only in July 2022 — not due to any cricketing reason but because of a global crisis that redefined life across borders — COVID-19.
With multiple members of India's support staff testing positive ahead of the fifth and final Test at Old Trafford, Manchester, the visitors were unable to take the field. As a result, the decider was abruptly postponed, with both boards later agreeing to reschedule it as a standalone Test during India's white-ball tour of England in July 2022.

Jasprit Bumrah stood out with a match haul of 9/110, and KL Rahul impressed with a fluent 84.
2nd Test, Lord's:
India bounced back strongly to win by 151 runs. KL Rahul's 129 and a spirited bowling performance led by Mohammed Siraj (4/94 & 4/32) saw England collapse for just 120 in their fourth innings.
3rd Test, Headingley:
England roared back, demolishing India by an innings and 76 runs after bundling them out for a paltry 78 in the first innings.
Joe Root continued his sublime form with his third century of the series.
4th Test, The Oval:
India stunned the hosts again with a comeback win. Despite trailing by 99 runs after the first innings, a majestic 127 by Rohit Sharma helped India post 466 in the second innings and eventually secure a 157-run victory, giving them a 2–1 series lead.
The fifth Test that never happened:
With the momentum in India's favour and a historic series win within reach, the final Test in Manchester was scheduled to begin on September 10, 2021.
However, the game was thrown into chaos when several members of the Indian team, including head coach Ravi Shastri, tested positive for COVID-19. As a precaution, the Indian players refused to take the field. The ECB first announced a delay and then declared the match cancelled.
"Due to fears of a further increase in the number of COVID cases inside the camp, India are regrettably unable to field a team," the ECB had said in a statement.
The BCCI maintained that the decision was driven by medical advice and a desire to ensure player safety.
In the following weeks, both boards worked on finding a solution. Finally, it was agreed that the match would be played in July 2022, and it would still count as part of the 2021 series, keeping the 2–1 lead and the series context intact.
A different Team India took the field in 2022
A lot changed between September 2021 and July 2022.
India had undergone a leadership change after Virat Kohli stepped down from Test captaincy following the South Africa series in January 2022. Rohit Sharma was named the new captain, but he too tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the rescheduled Test. KL Rahul was unavailable due to injury, and ultimately, Jasprit Bumrah led India — becoming the first fast bowler to captain India in a Test since Kapil Dev.
Despite the turmoil, India posted a strong first-innings total of 416 at Edgbaston, powered by a breathtaking 146 from Rishabh Pant.
England responded with 284, and India set them a daunting target of 378. In an extraordinary turnaround, England chased it down, riding on an unbeaten century from Joe Root (142*), levelling the series 2-2 and achieving their highest successful run chase in Test history.
A series remembered for more than just cricket
While the series itself was a rollercoaster of performances — from KL Rahul's resilience, Bumrah's brilliance, Root's consistency to Pant's audacity — it will forever be remembered for its unprecedented interruption.
As India return to English shores for the 2025 series under a new leadership group, the memories of 2021 serve both as a reminder of cricket's fragility and its remarkable resilience. From empty stadiums to delayed Tests, from biobubbles to breakthroughs, the 2021 series was a saga shaped not just by bat and ball, but by the times in which it was played.

SL vs BAN: Sri Lanka gears up for Angelo Mathews' swansong and fresh start against Bangladesh

Sri Lanka is set to begin a two-Test series against Bangladesh in Galle on Tuesday that will mark the end of Angelo Mathews's 'dream run' in the game's longest format, as the cricket season resumed following South Africa's World Test Championship triumph at Lord's. The red-ball matches between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will be followed by a white-ball series of three One-Day Internationals and three T20Is. Host Sri Lanka begins the contest as firm favourite, eager to turn a fresh page after a stuttering end to the previous World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. Sri Lanka was firmly in the mix for a place in the WTC final until December before the wheels came off spectacularly. Two defeats in South Africa followed by a twin collapse at Galle against Australia saw it tumble down the rankings. 'We had one hand on a spot in the final but a few brain fades at crunch moments cost us dearly,' Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva told reporters on Monday. 'We've learnt our lessons. A strong home start lays the foundation for success on the road.' 'Dream run' Sri Lanka's squad includes six uncapped players, with at least one debut cap set to be handed out. Spin remains its strength, with Prabath Jayasuriya the key and selectors also calling up off-spinner Akila Dananjaya. Bangladesh enters the series without stalwarts Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan, and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto is realistic about the challenge. 'Tamim and Shakib — those are massive boots to fill,' he said. 'But this is a chance for the young guys to put their hands up.' Shanto, who is playing in Galle for the first time, said the team have 'prepped well and we're ready for the challenge'. ALSO READ | Shubman Gill says he would like to build a 'secure' culture for Team India The Test will also be the swansong of Sri Lanka's veteran Angelo Mathews, who is retiring after 118 Tests. The former skipper also played his first Test on the famous pitch perched beneath the fortress in Galle in 2009. 'It's been a dream run,' said 38-year-old Mathews. 'The wins in England in 2014 and whitewashing the Aussies in 2016 stand out. I've seen so many youngsters come through the ranks,' he said. 'I truly believe Sri Lanka's future is in good hands.' Sri Lanka has won 20 of the 26 Tests it has played against Bangladesh, which has only managed a solitary win, along with five draws. The second Test will begin in Colombo on June 25.

Set during a cricket match, the TVC shows a fun and powerful moment. Bumrah is fielding near the boundary when a few fans start booing and teasing him. He quietly chews a Boomer gum, blows a bubble and everything changes. The boos quickly turn into cheers: 'BOOOOOOO-MRAHH... BUMRAH!' The ad shows how Boomer adds that cool, confident vibe, turning any tough moment into a winning one. Women's ODI World Cup 2025: Where will Pakistan play their matches in the India-hosted tournament?

Image credit: ICC NEW DELHI: India's high-voltage Women's ODI World Cup clash against Pakistan will be played at a neutral venue — the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo — on October 5, as confirmed by the ICC on Monday. The decision to host the Indo-Pak tie in Colombo aligns with the 'Hybrid Model' that was approved earlier this year for the men's Champions Trophy and other ICC events after India opted not to travel to Pakistan. There had been speculation about whether the ICC would schedule the Indo-Pak match in the round-robin stage — a regular feature of global events — especially in the wake of the recent terror attacks in Kashmir's Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 Indian tourists. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Given the rising military tensions between the two countries, doubts persisted over whether India would face Pakistan at ICC tournaments. However, with the official schedule released on Monday, those concerns have now been addressed. India will begin their World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru on September 30, a fixture that also serves as the tournament opener. On October 26, India will return to Bengaluru to face Bangladesh, ending speculation that the venue might lose hosting rights following a stampede during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL celebrations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Pelajari Undo Seeking their first-ever title win, India will take on South Africa on October 9 and then face defending champions Australia on October 12 — both matches will be held in Visakhapatnam. Following those fixtures, the team will move to Indore to meet England on October 19, and then head to Guwahati for their October 23 game against New Zealand. 'With the eight best teams in the women's game descending on India, alongside incredible venues and what promises to be record-breaking crowds, we are all looking forward to an unforgettable tournament,' said Jay Shah, the ICC Chairman, in a release. However, the BCCI is yet to announce the formation of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) responsible for running the tournament. Australia will open their campaign against New Zealand on October 1 in Indore. Their blockbuster match against England — a rematch of the previous edition's final — will be held on October 22, also in Indore. WHERE WILL PAKISTAN PLAY THEIR MATCHES? As per the hybrid model, Pakistan will play all their World Cup matches in Colombo. Along with the match against India, they are scheduled to face Bangladesh (October 2), Australia (October 8), England (October 15), New Zealand (October 18), South Africa (October 21), and Sri Lanka (October 24) — all at the Premadasa Stadium. The first semifinal will take place on October 29 at either Guwahati or Colombo, depending on Pakistan's qualification. The second semifinal will be held in Bengaluru on October 30. The final is scheduled for November 2 and will be played either in Bengaluru or Colombo, based on Pakistan's progression. This is the first time since 2013 that India is hosting the Women's ODI World Cup. The format will follow a round-robin stage with all eight teams playing each other once. The top four teams will qualify for the semifinals. India, Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa, and Sri Lanka secured direct entry to the tournament. Pakistan and Bangladesh made it through the Qualifiers held in Lahore earlier this year, with Bangladesh advancing at the cost of the West Indies.
