Missing MP woman lawyer found near Nepal border — did she stage her disappearance? Here's what cops say
On the intervening night of August 7 and 8, the 29-year-old lawyer was heading to Katni from Indore for the Rakshabandhan festival. But she did not reach her destination and has been missing since then.
She was a practising lawyer at the Indore bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court and was also preparing for a civil judge examination.
On Tuesday, she contacted her family to say that she was safe, which allowed police to trace her location near the Nepal border, reported India Today.
"Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel finally traced Archana Tiwari in Lakhimpur-Khiri town on the Indo-Nepal border after 12 days of hectic search," Superintendent of Police (Railways) Rahul Kumar Lodha said.
The SP also said that the cops are bringing her back to Bhopal, and after recording her statement, details of the entire episode will be known.
Archana reportedly staged her disappearance act because of the family pressure to abandon her studies and get married. Her family had arranged her marriage with a Patwari (a local land record officer), according to an India Today report citing the police.
'Archana was engaged to a Patwari and was told to quit her studies to prepare for the wedding. She told one Saransh Chopchen, whom she got in touch with while studying at Indore, about this,' Rahul Lodha said.
Earlier, Archana Tiwari's kin had suspected that she was a victim of human trafficking and had sought a CBI probe.
"This is a case of human trafficking; however, police are not investigating this angle. I request the chief minister to hand over the investigation to the CBI," Tiwari's uncle Babu Prakash Tiwari had told reporters.
He also claimed a youth recently became a victim of poisoning and disappeared from Pipariya town.
Archana's last location was traced to Itarsi station. After that, her mobile phone was found switched off, according to the police.
On August 7, the lawyer had left for Katni by the Narmada Express train, but did not reach her destination.
Following this, her family members had lodged a missing person complaint at the Rani Kamalapati GRP police station in Bhopal.
Police searched for clues in areas ranging from Rani Kamalapati station to Itarsi and Katni, and scanned CCTV cameras of stations and surrounding areas.

1 2 Chandigarh: The UT police has initiated a regular departmental inquiry against inspector Poonam Dilawari in connection with the high-profile murder case of national-level shooter and advocate Sippy Sidhu. The inquiry follows directions from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is currently handling the case. The police have issued summons to the deceased's mother, Deepinder Kaur, and brother, Jasmanpreet Singh alias Jippy Sidhu, to attend the departmental proceedings scheduled for Aug 23. He had earlier filed a protest petition against the CBI report, alleging that the officer was in collusion with the accused, Kalyani Singh, and her family. He demanded that criminal proceedings under Sections 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 201 (destruction of evidence) be initiated against Dilawari. CBI Court Sentences 3 Postal Officials In Rs 1.21-Crore Forgery Case
New Delhi: A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Jabalpur has convicted and sentenced three officials of the Postal Department in Madhya Pradesh for their role in a corruption case that caused over Rs 1.21 crore loss to the government exchequer, the agency said on Thursday. According to the CBI, the court on Wednesday sentenced Vishal Kumar Ahirwar, the then Sub Post Master at Bina LSG Sub Post Office, District Sagar, to five years' rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 39,000. Vishal Kumar Ahirwar's colleagues - Hemant Singh and Ranu Namdeo, both serving as Sub Post Masters at the same branch - were each sentenced to four years' rigorous imprisonment with fines of Rs 7,000 each. The case was registered by the CBI on November 17, 2022, against Vishal Kumar Ahirwar and others following allegations that between January 1, 2020, and July 5, 2021, the accused officials had misused their positions at the post office. Investigations revealed that they manipulated several postal savings accounts and issued forged passbooks, thereby embezzling government funds. "The accused persons caused wrongful loss of Rs 1,21,82,921 to the Government exchequer and corresponding wrongful gain to themselves," the CBI statement said. After the investigation, a chargesheet was filed on December 29, 2023 before the court of Special Judge, CBI Cases, Jabalpur. Following a detailed trial, the court held all three guilty of corruption and allied charges. Officials said the verdict underscores the seriousness with which the judiciary views corruption cases involving custodians of public money. The CBI has in recent months intensified its crackdown on financial frauds in the postal and banking sectors, which directly affect citizens' savings. The conviction also highlights the central agency's focus on rooting out systemic corruption in government departments, especially those handling public funds as it leads to suffering to the common man and loss to the government.

TMC MLA, 2 others get bail in 2021 murder case
Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Thursday allowed the anticipatory bail plea by Trinamool Congress MLA Paresh Pal and two councilors, accused in the murder of BJP activist Abhijit Sarkar in 2021. Justice Jay Sengupta held that there was no evidence against Pal and TMC councillors Swapan Samaddar and Papiya Ghosh though their names were mentioned in CBI's supplementary charge sheet. Sarkar was killed within hours of the declaration of the 2021 Bengal assembly poll results on May 2. His brother had named the MLA in his complaint to Narkeldanga police.
