5 teams that should pounce on a Jameson Williams trade in near future

Yahoo10-07-2025
Heading into the 2022 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions traded up from 32 to No. 12 to select Alabama's Jameson Williams in the first round because they thought they had a need for a No. 1 wide receiver. While they didn't know it at the time, he was already on the roster in the form of Amon-Ra St. Brown, who had just wrapped up an incredible rookie season where the fourth-round selection racked up 912 yards and five touchdowns.
Lions general manager Brad Holmes' aggressive move required patience, knowing that Williams had suffered a torn ACL in the College Football Playoff National Championship. The recovery process from that injury limited Williams to just six games as a rookie, where he recorded one reception for 41 yards and a touchdown.

After improving to 354 yards and two touchdowns in his sophomore NFL season, Williams had a big breakout last year, recording 58 receptions for 1,001 yards and seven touchdowns. Now he's entering his fourth season, which is typically the time when teams extend their prized former first-round picks with a high-dollar contract extension.
Yet, despite the Lions already coming to terms with franchise cornerstones such as Aidan Hutchinson or Kerby Joseph, no such extension has come for Williams. His lack of long-term contract security has led to The Athletic's Colton Pouncy's assumption that the Lions could look to trade Williams, possibly as soon as next offseason.
However, as we've seen, sometimes players are traded without any warning. Other times, rumored trade timelines can be accelerated by an aggressive offer. Ultimately, if Williams is mildly available, which teams could plot a trade for the Lions' former first-round pick? Here's a list of five potential landing spots.

Jerry Jeudy has emerged as a respectable No. 1 option since arriving via trade from the Denver Broncos last season. However, the Browns aren't looking at Williams as their top option, like in Detroit, he'd be arriving as a complementary weapon who can help elevate the offense by providing a speed threat capable of taking short passes for long gains.

The Las Vegas Raiders are ready to supercharge their offense after injecting Pete Carroll, Geno Smith, and Ashton Jeanty into the building, but what about the receiving corps? Plus, we all know how much the ghost of Al Davis would appreciate a receiver with speed to burn.
Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers may be done targeting secondary weapons after adding Jonnu Smith, but they could get to training camp and realize more help is needed at the receiver position. If so, making an aggressive offer for Williams, who's still just 24 years old, could be a great way to boost their chances of returning to the playoffs and actually winning their first elimination game since 2016.

Buffalo Bills

While they managed to have the second-highest scoring offense in the NFL last season, the Buffalo Bills' receiving corps still lacks some star power. Adding Williams would give Josh Allen another receiver he'd have a hard time overthrowing, which could force defenses into a panic as they try covering every inch of the field.
Kansas City Chiefs

We've already seen how effective Patrick Mahomes can be when he has a capable speed demon playing the receiver position. While Xavier Worthy may already be on the path for greatness, the Chiefs will eventually have to replace some of Travis Kelce's targets, and why not do so with someone who's a tough cover on any given Sunday?

Chicago Bears to honor Virginia McCaskey, Steve McMichael in 2025

The Chicago Bears will honor matriarch Virginia Halas McCaskey and Hall of Fame defensive tackle Steve McMichael with jersey patches during the 2025 season, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Bears chairman George McCaskey told the Sun-Times that the Bears will wear a football-shaped patch with Virginia McCaskey's initials inside for every game this season, starting with next week's preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins. Virginia McCaskey passed away on Feb. 6 at the age of 102. The patch will be placed on player's jerseys above their hearts. The football is orange with navy stitches and a white outline. The navy 'M' is outlined in white and larger than the other two letters — V to the player's right, and H, for Halas, to the left. It's a nod to Virginia's father, George S. Halas, who died on Oct. 31, 1983. The Bears wore a similar patch for the remainder of the season, and it soon became permanent with the "GSH" on the left jersey sleeve which remains to this day. 'We thought it'd be appropriate to have a patch that mirrored her dad's after he passed away,' McCaskey told the Sun-Times. 'It came out great. We like the look of it.' The Bears also will not be wearing an alternate or throwback uniform this season as they remember Virginia McCaskey. The Bears will also honor McMichael, who passed away in April after a battle with ALS, with a decal on the back of their helmets. It will feature a navy football outlined in orange with white laces and his No. 76 in the middle. That same logo will be featured on Soldier Field grass on game day. McMichael was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August 2024, less than a year before his death. The Bears have found a way to honor two important figures in their storied history who passed away this season, and fans will get their first glimpse on Aug. 10 when Chicago hosts the Dolphins for their first preseason game. Cleveland Browns star out for season with torn Achilles

The worst has been confirmed by Cleveland Browns cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. The Browns' defensive back suffered a lower leg injury on Tuesday, which many were speculating was a torn Achilles. "Martin Emerson Jr. suffered what's an Achilles injury in today's practice," Mike Garafolo reported Tuesday. "He'll undergo imaging to determine the full extent of the injury but the expectation is it's a significant tear." After further evaluation, it was confirmed Emerson tore his Achilles and is done for the 2025 season. "CB Martin Emerson Jr. tore his Achilles and is out for the entire 2025 season," Ari Meirov confirms.. "A brutal blow for Emerson Jr., who was entering the final year of his rookie deal. He has started 33 games over three seasons, recording 4 interceptions, 34 pass deflections, and 202 tackles." The Browns' secondary is very thin when it comes to boundary cornerbacks. Not having Emerson could lead to Cleveland hitting the free agent market to bring in a proven veteran. Dolphins CB Kader Kohou to go on season-ending IR with knee injury

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Dolphins starting cornerback Kader Kohou will miss the 2025 season after suffering a knee injury in practice on Saturday. Miami coach Mike McDaniel said Wednesday morning that Kohou, a former undrafted player who quickly worked his way into a starting role, will go on injured reserve. Kohou went down grabbing at his right knee after a one-on-one rep against receiver Tyreek Hill during practice. He remained down for a couple minutes while being looked at by trainers before walking gingerly but under his own power off the Dolphins' practice field. 'I've seen him come into the league with nothing promised and earn his spot within this team,' McDaniel said. 'And this year in particular, I saw him ascend to a different level trying to take the reigns of his career and get his game to an even higher level. For that, and the timing of it, I was crushed until I talked to Kader, and honestly Kader made me feel a little bit better about where he was at, simply by his mindset.' Kohou signed with the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in 2022 and has recorded 180 tackles, one sack and three interceptions in three years. It's a significant blow to Miami's secondary that has undergone significant changes since the end of last season. All of the Dolphins' starters in the secondary — including All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who was traded, and safety Jevon Holland, who left in free agency — are gone. Miami recently signed veteran cornerback Mike Hilton, who figures to be the likely starter in the slot this season. Former Raiders and Patriots cornerback Jack Jones also recently signed with Miami to compete for an outside cornerback spot. Other options on the boundary include veteran Kendall Sheffield, Cam Smith and Storm Duck. McDaniel said he feels good about the Dolphins' depth at cornerback right now, but did not rule out the possibility of signing another experienced player. 'If there was a situation in a week where I didn't feel that we were good,' McDaniel added, "(general manager) Chris (Grier) and I would talk, and we would get something done there." Miami's secondary will also be without Ashtyn Davis for a while after the safety suffered a noncontact injury in practice this week. McDaniel said the team is still evaluating the extent of the injury, but it isn't expected to be season-ending. ___ AP NFL:
