Chinese FM Wang Yi to visit India for border talks
Foreign Minister Wang Yi will visit India on Delhi's invitation from Monday until Wednesday for 'the 24th special representatives meeting on the China-India border issue,' a spokesperson said in a statement.
Past trade between the neighbors across icy, high-altitude Himalayan border passes was usually small in volume, but any resumption is significant for its symbolism.
It stopped following a deadly 2020 clash between border troops.
Indian media reported this week that Wang was expected for talks in New Delhi on Monday.
He will meet Indian national security adviser Ajit Doval, New Delhi's foreign ministry confirmed in a statement on Saturday.
Wang will also hold talks with his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, who visited Beijing in July, the statement said.
The two major economic powers have long competed for strategic influence across South Asia.
However, they have moved to mend ties after being caught up in global trade and geopolitical turbulence triggered by US President Donald Trump's tariff blitz.
Chinese and Indian officials have said in recent weeks that the two countries were discussing the resumption of border trade.
Agreements to resume direct flights and issue tourist visas have also been seen as part of an effort to rebuild their relationship.

Pakistan extends deadline for Hajj applications under government scheme by one day
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan announced on Saturday it has extended the deadline for receiving Hajj applications under the government scheme by one day, with designated banks set to accept forms on Monday, as authorities reported receiving more than 110,000 applications over the past 12 days. The country has a Hajj quota of 179,210 pilgrims, of which 129,210 seats have been allocated to the government scheme and the rest to private tour operators. The religious affairs ministry said earlier the State Bank of Pakistan had accepted its request and ordered 14 designated banks to keep branches open for Hajj applications on the final day, which fell on Saturday, though the deadline was later extended in the evening. 'The receipt of Hajj applications has been extended by one day,' a ministry spokesperson said in a statement. 'Designated banks will continue receiving applications on Monday, Aug. 18," it added. "More than 110,000 applications have been received in the last 12 days, with only 7,000 seats left under the government scheme.' The ministry said the extension was on a 'first-come, first-served basis' and that applications would close as soon as the quota was filled. It clarified that no extension would be granted for the ministry's online portal, which would stop accepting applications at midnight on Aug. 16. Pakistan began receiving applications on Aug. 4. Applicants were advised to obtain computerized receipts and verify their details through the ministry's portal or the Pak Hajj 2026 app. Under the government scheme, pilgrims can choose between a long package (38-42 days) and a short package (20-25 days), with costs ranging between Rs1,150,000 and Rs1,250,000 ($4,050–4,236). Applicants are required to deposit a first installment of Rs500,000 or Rs550,000 depending on the package, while the remaining dues will be collected in November. Saudi Arabia had approved the same quota for Pakistan in 2025, though private tour operators last year struggled to utilize their share, saying they faced technical and financial delays, even as the government filled its quota of over 88,000 pilgrims.

Germany proposes Trump-Putin-Zelenskyy summit be held in Europe
A three-way summit US President Donald Trump has mooted with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin could take place in Europe, Germany's leader suggested on Saturday. 'I think that such a three-way meeting will take place,' German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said in an interview with TV networks NTV and RTL, according to an advance transcript AFP obtained. 'The date and place are still to be worked out. We have proposed that a place could be found in Europe,' he said. Trump, in the wake of his Friday summit with Putin in Alaska to speak about Ukraine, said he and European leaders wanted to see another summit take place, this time with a seat at the table for Zelenskyy. After his talk with Putin failed to make headway on a ceasefire in Ukraine, Trump shifted his stance to say was now keen on securing a full peace agreement. One challenge for Putin to step foot in Europe is that there is an International Criminal Court arrest warrant out for him over the alleged mass abduction of Ukrainian children during the war. The United States is not a party to the ICC, and Hungary -- an EU country ruled by Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who is friendly with both Trump and Putin -- is in the process of withdrawing from the ICC's founding treaty. Merz suggested that a European venue for the possible summit 'should maybe be a place where discussions might take place on a permanent basis,' but he did not specify any country or city. 'Those are detailed issues. They will only be clarified in coming days, or even coming weeks,' he said.
