Power outage hits Cannes Film Festival and traffic in southeastern France

Independent24-05-2025
A major power outage struck southeastern France on Saturday, disrupting traffic and briefly halting events at the Cannes Film Festival as the prestigious event prepared to hand out its top prize.
About 160,000 households in the Alpes-Maritimes department lost electricity after a high-voltage line fell Saturday morning, electricity network operator RTE said on X. The outage came hours after a fire at an electrical substation near Cannes overnight had already weakened the grid.
Cannes Film Festival organizers confirmed the outage affected the early activities of Saturday and said the Palais des Festivals — the Croisette's main venue — had switched to an independent power supply.
'All scheduled events and screenings, including the Closing Ceremony, will proceed as planned and under normal conditions,' the statement said. "At this stage, the cause of the outage has not yet been identified. Restoration efforts are underway."
Still, screenings at the Cineum, one of the festival's satellite venues, were briefly suspended, the festival added.
Traffic lights in parts of Cannes and the surrounding city of Antibes stopped working after 10 a.m., leading to traffic jams and confusion in city centers. Most shops along the Croisette remained closed, and local food kiosks were only accepting cash. Train service in Cannes was also disrupted.
Authorities said restoration efforts were ongoing and urged residents to remain cautious during travel.

Elton John and David Walliams blamed for ‘ruining hen do'

Sir Elton John and David Walliams have been blamed for ruining a woman's hen do. The stars shared photographs of themselves enjoying lunch at the luxurious La Guérite restaurant, on the Île Ste-Marguerite, south of Cannes. But it has been claimed their presence at the Riviera restaurant meant a group of women who were booked in to celebrate their friend's forthcoming wedding had their reservation cancelled. Levelling the accusation at the stars on Instagram, one woman wrote: 'Hope you enjoyed La Guérite! Our reservation was cancelled for my best friend's hen do due to your 'semi-private event'.' She added another comment saying: 'We booked our table in May didn't think it would be cancelled with 24 hours' notice.' This claim was supported by another woman, apparently also a member of her party, who wrote 'So bad isn't it! We flew here especially for this for our friend's hen.' It is unclear if Sir Elton or Walliams were aware of any bookings being cancelled. The Telegraph has contacted representatives for comment. The women's comments were posted beneath a photo shared by Walliams, showing the former Britain's Got Talent judge sitting alongside Sir Elton at the restaurant. Walliams also shared a video of himself dancing around the lunch table to Whitney Houston's I Wanna Dance with Somebody with young actors Joe Locke, Kit Connor and Tobie Donovan, all of whom star in the Netflix series Heartstopper. Sir Elton was spotted at the same restaurant with David Furnish, his husband, in July. The pop star is understood to own a £15m villa known as the Yellow Palace in Nice, along the coast from Cannes. He has hosted a number of celebrities at the house, including the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who holidayed there with their son Archie in 2019. The Île Ste-Marguerite, famous for the 17th-century Fort Royal, where Dumas's fictional Man in the Iron Mask was imprisoned, is the largest island of the five-island Îles de Lérins archipelago in the Bay of Cannes.

Shailene Woodley and beau Lucas Bravo show rare PDA on camping trip... five months after taking romance public

Shailene Woodley and boyfriend Lucas Bravo showed rare PDA as the couple gave a glimpse into their new romance. The 33-year-old actress was first linked to the Emily In Paris hunk, 37, in March, with the pair going Instagram official the following month. Lucas — who has been filming the upcoming fifth season of his hit Netflix series — jumped to his Instagram page on Thursday to share a few snippets from a memorable camping trip with Shailene and their close pals. In one image, the French actor could be seen cozying up next to the her as they lounged in the back of a Land Rover. The Big Little Lies actress sweetly wrapped her arms around Lucas as they both flashed cheerful smiles. Another picture seemingly showed Lucas sitting toward the back entrance of the car as he lovingly rested his hand on Shailene's leg while she sat across from him. Lucas and Shailene continued to flash winning grins as two of their friends joined them in the back of the car. He went on to share additional snippets from the road trip adventure with his 2.1 million followers, including a photo of an adorable dog sitting in the back with them. The orange sun could be seen setting in the far distance as the group drove through a quiet area of open land. After they got out of the Land Rover, Lucas snapped a few photos of the rest of the group watching the sun set. Shailene was pictured wearing a pair of light-blue denim shorts and a tan sweater as she carried on a lighthearted conversation with her pals. After a long day, the group made their way indoors, and some of them could be seen lounging on the floor or on a comfy couch inside a spacious room. Lucas also included a silhouette of one of the women — possibly Shailene — as she turned around with the last light of day in the background. In the caption of his post, the Ticket To Paradise star simply wrote to his fans: 'Kintsugi Moon.' Shailene and Lucas were first linked in March as they cozied up together on a stroll through the streets of Paris. Then, in April, the lovebirds went Instagram official as the actor shared photos of himself and Shailene venturing on a romantic desert trip. The stars had a blast as they visited Slab City in California, before stopping by the Stagecoach Music Festival. In one image, the pair could be seen sitting on the ground at the bustling event as the actress took a quick selfie. Another picture was taken to show a close up as Shailene and Lucas sweetly held hands while exploring the festival grounds. They also embraced as they had the chance to meet Sophie Hawley-Weld from the musical duo SOFI TUKKER. The Divergent actress made another appearance in the French actor's carousel of snaps as they stopped by Salvation Mountain. Lucas broke his silence on the budding relationship in April in an interview with People. 'Yeah, I'm really happy,' Lucas declared while attending the Broadway opening of Good Night, And Good Luck, which stars George Clooney. Shailene and Lucas were most recently seen earlier this month, when the actress visited her boyfriend on the set of Emily In Paris. The actor is known for portraying the character of chef Gabriel in the Netflix series, which is in the midst of filming its upcoming fifth season. In photos obtained by People, Lucas was seen draping his arm over Shailene's shoulders as he pulled her into a loving embrace. Back in 2022, Shailene split from her fiancé Aaron Rodgers, who recently revealed that he had tied the knot earlier this year in a private ceremony. Lucas was previously linked to another actor in the past, but their identity has not been revealed. As he steps back into the shoes of his character Gabriel, the actor previously admitted that the role had become 'not fun' while talking to IndieWire last year. The star hinted at the time that he may not return for season five due to his contract ending after the fourth season. Of the show, Lucas said, 'It's a comedy, everybody is having fun around me, everybody is jumping around, and I'm just slowly sinking into God knows what.' As he steps back into the shoes of his character Gabriel, the actor previously admitted that the role has become 'not fun' while talking to IndieWire last year; Lucas seen as Gabriel in Emily In Paris In regard to the actor's comments about his character, Emily In Paris creator Darren Star shared his thoughts during an interview with Deadline in June. He stated that it had been a 'misunderstanding' while adding, 'I think he was never intending not to come back.' After confirming that Lucas was back for the fifth season, Darren then gave a little insight as to what fans can expect with Lily Collins' character Emily and her storyline.

David Walliams leaves pal Sir Elton John in stitches as he dances wildly during their swanky lunch in St Tropez

left pal Sir Elton John in stitches as he got to his feet to dance during their swanky lunch at the La Guerite beach club in St Tropez. The comedian, 53, couldn't contain his excitement when Whitney Houston 's I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me) was played, much to the amusement of the pop icon, 78. David stood at the table and swayed animatedly to the music, before moving to dance with his hands on the back of Sir Elton's chair. The Crocodile Rock legend, who looked smart in a summer shirt, appeared in great spirits and sang along before collapsing into fits of giggles. David, shielding his eyes behind shades, was loving every moment and had a huge grin on his face as the other diners laughed along. He shared the clip to X and captioned it: 'Summer holiday'. As well as Elton David was joined by Heartstopper stars Kit Connor, 21, Joe Locke, 21, and Tobie Donovan, 23, sharing snaps as they soaked up the sun together. The La Guerite beach club is the very place that Sir Elton reportedly 'said his piece' about the Beckham feud as he dined at the swanky eatery with Brooklyn and wife Nicola Peltz last month. The once close-knit Beckham family has been thrown into turmoil in recent months, amid claims Brooklyn has become increasingly estranged from his famous parents after failing to attend any of his father 50th birthday celebrations in May. It was also revealed that Brooklyn and Nicola's Instagram accounts no longer follow his younger brothers in the latest family drama. According to The Sun, Sir Elton 'briefly' spoke about the family's feud in the hope Brooklyn would patch things up with his parents, and footage of the outing shared on social media showed the pair shaking hands. Speaking about Elton's attempts to play peacekeeper in the row, a source said: 'Elton is the showbiz equivalent of Switzerland. He's utterly neutral in this row. 'Elton of old may have relished in taking sides - in this case his young godson, Brooklyn - but two years off his 80th birthday, he's a man who has seen and done it all. He just wants everyone to be happy. 'There is no side-taking as such; he simply adores his godson, and really has a laugh with Nicola who he thinks has a great sense of humour. He wants to look after them in his role as 'spiritual adviser' as a godfather, it's a role he takes seriously. 'Elton and David think the situation is terribly sad, and has gently suggested to all involved that life is short - to patch things up.' The source added Elton is 'adamant he doesn't want to stick his nose in' the feud, he just simply 'wants peace'. Sir Elton is also said to have generously picked up the entire bill, after dining on the restaurant's signature lobster linguine which comes in at an eye-watering £190. David affectionately calls the musician 'Uncle Elton' after becoming friends in his football heyday. Sir Elton was due to perform at the Beckhams wedding in 1999 before suffering a heart attack that prevented him from playing. He later sang at one of the children's christenings. Meanwhile Victoria once disclosed that it was Elton who inspired her to say goodbye to the Spice Girls, penning an emotional letter to her older self where she confessed that watching her friend perform made her realise that her true calling lay beyond singing. It comes after Elton poured cold water on rumours he's planning a flashy ABBA-style hologram concert, despite fans thinking the tech-filled spectacle could be next on the cards. Hopeful supporters began speculating after spotting trademark documents for his name covering holograms, video projections and immersive 3D virtual reality experiences. But according to reports, those close to the Rocket Man have made it clear there's no such show in the pipeline. Elton has long made his stance clear, previously admitting in 2018 that the idea wasn't for him. However, during his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, he did briefly dabble in the digital world with a London pop-up at King's Cross, which featured an augmented reality version of him playing the piano.
