CBI Files Chargesheet Against Ex J&K Governor Satyapal Malik In Corruption Case
The CBI has filed a chargesheet against former Jammu and Kashmir governor Satyapal Malik and seven others in connection with alleged corruption in the award of Rs 2,200-crore civil works for Kiru hydropower project, officials said Thursday.
The agency has filed its chargesheet after three years of probe before a special court naming Mr Malik and his two aides Virender Rana and Kanwar Singh Rana, they said.
The other persons named in the chargesheet included the then Chenab Valley Power Projects Pvt Ltd (CVPPPL) managing director M S Babu, its directors Arun Kumar Mishra and M K Mittal, managing director of construction firm Patel Engineering Ltd Rupen Patel and private person Kanwaljeet Singh Duggal, the officials said.
In a message on 'X' on Thursday, Mr Malik said he was admitted in the hospital and not in a condition to talk to anyone. The former governor said he was getting calls from many well-wishers which he was unable to take.
The CBI had conducted searches at the premises of Mr Malik and others in connection with the case in February last year.
The case pertains to the alleged malpractices in the award of the contract worth about Rs 2,200 crore of civil works of the Kiru Hydro Electric Power (HEP) Project to a private company in 2019, the CBI had said after the registration of the FIR in 2022.
Mr Malik, who was the governor of Jammu and Kashmir from August 23, 2018 to October 30, 2019, had claimed that he was offered a Rs 300-crore bribe for clearing two files, including the one pertaining to the project.
He denied allegations of corruption against him after the agency conducted search operation last year.
Mr Malik said his residence was raided by the CBI instead of investigating the people he had complained about and who were involved in corruption.
"They will not get anything except four-five kurtas and pyjamas. The dictator is trying to scare me by misusing government agencies. I am a farmer's son, I will neither be afraid nor bow down," he had posted online.
The central agency had filed the FIR against Navin Kumar Choudhary, the then chairman of the CVPPPL, and other officials including Babu, Mittal and Mishra, besides construction firm Patel Engineering.
"Though a decision was taken in the 47th board meeting of CVPPPL for re-tender through e-tendering with a reverse auction after the cancellation of the ongoing tendering process, the same was not implemented (according to the decision taken in the 48th board meeting) and the tender was finally awarded to Patel Engineering Limited," the FIR has alleged.

Postal department to pay Rs 50,000 for losing law grad's certificates
Hyderabad: The district consumer disputes redressal commission, Ranga Reddy, has ordered the postal department to pay Rs 50,000 to a Hyderabad resident for mental agony after his original degree certificates, sent by Osmania University through Speed Post, were wrongly delivered and never recovered. The complaint was filed by Ch Ravinder, 25, of Shabad, who had completed his five-year law course from Osmania University. In July 2021, the university dispatched his original degree and other certificates to his registered address. However, instead of delivering them to him, the local postman at Shabad post office allegedly handed them to a neighbour, claiming Ravinder's house was locked. Repeated requests and legal notices to trace the parcel failed. With no certificates in hand, Ravinder approached the consumer commission. They argued that departmental rules capped compensation for lost Speed Post articles at double the postal charges or Rs 1,000, whichever was less, and sought dismissal of the complaint. The commission rejected this defence, calling it a clear deficiency in service and citing earlier rulings that even the recipient of a Speed Post parcel is a consumer under the Consumer Protection Act if booking charges were paid on their behalf. "In this case, the complainant paid fees to Osmania University for issuance of his certificates, and the Speed Post booking was done in his name. He is therefore entitled to relief," the order said. The commission directed the chief post master general, the director (postal services), the superintendent of post offices, and the Shabad post master to jointly and severally pay Rs 50,000 as compensation and Rs 10,000 additionally towards litigation costs. India is ahead in clean energy commitments, achieves 2030 goal five years early In what could be considered as a landmark moment for India's clean energy journey, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, from the ramparts of the Red Fort, on Friday announced that the nation has achieved its 50 per cent clean energy target in 2025 -- a full five years ahead of the 2030 deadline. Marking Independence Day celebrations, the Prime Minister announced and hailed the achievement as a pivotal step towards an Atmanirbhar Bharat in the energy sector, underscoring the country's transformation from a fossil-fuel-dependent importer to a global clean energy leader. "When the world today expresses concern over global warming, I wish to tell the world that Bharat has resolved to achieve 50 per cent clean energy by 2030. That was our target for 2030. Look at the capability of my countrymen, look at their determination to fulfil the resolve of making Bharat developed--we achieved the 50 per cent clean energy target in 2025 itself, five years ahead of schedule. According to the latest government data, India added a record 29.52 gigawatts (GW) of renewable capacity in 2024-25, taking total installed renewable energy (RE) capacity to 234.24 GW (excluding nuclear), up from 198.75 GW last year. Solar energy leads the charge, with installed capacity skyrocketing from just 2.82 GW in 2014 to 116.24 GW today, now accounting for nearly half of India's total RE capacity. Wind power follows at 51.67 GW, while large and small hydro contribute 54.72 GW combined. Biopower has also grown to 11.59 GW over the past decade. India now ranks 4th globally in total RE capacity, 3rd in solar power, and 4th in wind energy, boasting the world's fastest-growing renewable program. The clean energy surge has been powered by a suite of ambitious government reforms and programs. The PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, with a Rs 75,021 crore outlay, aims to provide free solar electricity to one crore households. As of August 14, 2025, over 17.24 lakh households have benefitted, with subsidies worth Rs 9,841.77 crore released. The scheme also introduced Model Solar Villages to promote decentralised clean power at the grassroots level. In agriculture, the PM-KUSUM scheme has installed over 8.53 lakh solar pumps, replacing diesel-powered systems and cutting an estimated 6.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. Beyond solar, India is expanding in wind, hydro, bioenergy, green hydrogen, and nuclear power. Offshore wind projects, backed by a Rs 7,453 crore viability gap funding scheme, are set to add 1 GW capacity off Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, with a Rs 19,744 crore budget, targets 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) annual production by 2030, along with 125 GW of new RE, Rs 8 lakh crore in investments, and 6 lakh jobs. Hydrogen hubs have been identified in Kandla, Paradip, and Tuticorin. In the nuclear sector, operational capacity has grown from 4,780 MW in 2014 to 8,780 MW across 25 reactors, with a remarkable 87 per cent plant load factor in 2024-25. Ten new reactors are already functional, and capacity is set to increase tenfold by 2047. "The result is a virtuous cycle: local manufacturing creates jobs and resilience, competitive tariffs make clean energy affordable, and inclusive programs bring every citizen into the transition. As we look ahead to 2030 and beyond, India is not just meeting global commitments -- it is setting a new template for how a nation can grow, decarbonise, and remain self-reliant. In the journey from energy dependence to energy leadership, the momentum is unmistakable, and the destination is clear: an Atmanirbhar Bharat, powered by its own clean, green energy," the government said today, in a factsheet.
