Rockies were once in danger of breaking MLB mark for losses. Now, they're piling up wins

DENVER (AP) — This was a cool moment for Warming Bernabel — being doused with an icy bucket of water.
Not that long ago, winning moments like this were few and far between for the Colorado Rockies. That winning feeling, though, has returned a little more often in the second half of the season. The Rockies rallied to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 on Monday night courtesy of Bernabel's walk-off single in the ninth inning.
With that, the Rockies snapped a 10-game skid against the Dodgers. They also tied their season-high winning streak of four games.
Even more, they're 14-15 since the All-Star break, while the NL West-leading Dodgers are 13-15. Colorado still trails the defending World Series champions by 35 games in the standings.
No longer are the Rockies in imminent danger of setting a modern-era major league mark for losses, though. At 36-89, Colorado needs to win six of its final 37 games to steer clear of the dubious record set by the 2024 Chicago White Sox, who finished 41-121.
'We're at this stage right now where we're trying to get better as a team,' All-Star catcher Hunter Goodman said. 'We're trying to play the game the right way and do things to put us in a position in the future to get to the spot that some of these teams we're playing against are in.'
Colorado has won five series since the All-Star break. That after winning just two series before the break.
'You definitely see flashes,' Goodman said. 'We're a super-young team. But getting that learning experience and figuring out how to win at this level and how to do it together as a team has been pretty cool to watch the last month or so.'
The last time Colorado beat the Dodgers was Sept. 21. It's been a little longer since the Rockies last beat Los Angeles at Coors Field — June 19, 2024, to be precise.
'It's good to get a win. We're playing good baseball right now,' Goodman said. 'It's just going out and playing clean baseball and playing the way we've been playing.'
The Dodgers entered the four-game series in the Mile High City fresh off a sweep of rival San Diego. Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts insisted his team wouldn't overlook the Rockies.
'We're going to get their best. We're prepared for that,' Roberts said before the game. 'But yeah, absolutely, teams try to kind of use us as a marker. We see that.'
In the ninth inning, the Dodgers were playing their outfielders deep to prevent a double. It ended up costing them one.
Ezequiel Tovar started a one-out rally with a bloop double that a charging Teoscar Hernández couldn't haul in.

'It's a big outfield,' Hernández explained. 'I tried to make a play. I didn't.'
Bernabel followed by sending a pitch from Justin Wrobleski (4-5) up the middle to bring home Tovar.
'There's no cooler way to win a game in baseball than a walk-off,' Goodman said. 'It's always fun when that happens.'

Cubs OF Kyle Tucker played with a small fracture in his right hand after he got hurt in June

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Cubs outfielder Kyle Tucker played with a small fracture in his right hand after he got hurt in June, and manager Craig Counsell said that might have contributed to his trouble at the plate. Speaking after a 4-3 victory over Milwaukee on Wednesday night, Counsell confirmed an ESPN report that detailed the extent of Tucker's injury. The All-Star slugger jammed his right ring finger during an awkward slide in a victory over Cincinnati on June 1. Initial X-rays were negative. He missed one game and then made a pinch-hitting appearance before returning to the starting lineup on June 5. 'He was sore for a little while, but was able to play,' Counsell said. 'We did some more imaging, and it showed a small fracture that was healing, and, you know, that's it. Is it possible that this has caused kind of like, playing through it, changed some things? Yeah, absolutely. I think it's probably likely that at some point that happened. But he wanted to play.' Counsell said Tucker hasn't had any more imaging since the fracture was found, and it has healed by this point. '(It) hasn't been an issue,' Counsell said. The 28-year-old Tucker hasn't played since he went 0 for 4 in Monday's 7-0 loss to Milwaukee. He has been getting some time off in hopes of helping him break out of his prolonged slump, but he could return to the lineup as soon as Thursday's series finale against the Brewers. Tucker has brushed off any questions about his health amid his offensive slump. 'I'm fine,' he said Tuesday. 'I mean, I've played, you know, for the most part every game this year. So I'm fine going out there.' Tucker was acquired in a December trade with Houston. He is eligible for free agency after this season. He got off to a terrific start this year, batting .290 with 17 homers, 52 RBIs and a .923 OPS in his first 85 games. He made the All-Star Game for the fourth time. But he hasn't been the same player since the break. He is batting .148 (8 for 54) in August, and he has just two extra-base hits — both doubles — in his last 24 games. 'The fact that he's going through that and he's trying to grind for us and get it any way he can to put himself in a good position to play, I mean that just kind of shows you the type of guy is, and the kind of teammate he is,' rookie third baseman Matt Shaw said. 'And I think for all of us, that helps motivate us as a team.' ___ AP MLB:

Rockies rough up Ohtani in his 1st start at Coors Field and beat Dodgers 8-3

DENVER (AP) — Hunter Goodman had three hits and three RBIs, Tanner Gordon gave up one run in six innings, and the MLB-worst Colorado Rockies roughed up Shohei Ohtani in his first pitching start at Coors Field in an 8-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night. Ohtani (0-1) gave up five earned runs in four innings. He allowed nine hits, tying a career high. The reigning National League MVP got hit on the right knee by a 93-mph line drive off the bat of Colorado's Orlando Arciao in the fourth inning that caused him to limp and grimace in pain. He stayed in the game and finished the inning. He also drew a walk in his at-bat in the fifth, but didn't return to the game when his turn came up in the eighth inning. There was no immediate word why Ohtani didn't return to the game. The Rockies, who are 37-90 and 35 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West, have won seven of their last nine. The Dodgers had won 28 of their previous 35 games against Colorado, dating to the 2022 season. Gordon (4-5) earned the win for the Rockies after surrendering 26 earned runs across 15 ⅓ innings in his previous four starts. Jordan Beck had three hits for Colorado, while Tyler Freeman, Brenton Doyle and Mickey Moniak finished with two hits apiece. Arcia added two RBIs for the Rockies, who finished with 16 hits. Miguel Rojas had two RBIs and Teoscar Hernandez hit his 21st homer for the Dodgers. With a double and a walk, Ohtani extended his on-base streak to 18 games. The loss was the sixth in 10 games for the Dodgers, who entered with a two-game lead over San Diego in the division. Key moment A Freeman RBI single to right capped a three-run fourth for the Rockies, extending their lead to 5-0. Key stat Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. With two hits and an RBI, Doyle improved his batting average since the All-Star break to .386, the best in the majors in that period. Up next Dodgers LHP Clayton Kershaw (7-2, 3.01 ERA) faces Colorado RHP Chase Dollander (2-9, 6.43) Thursday. ___ AP MLB:
