Aston Villa v Newcastle: Key stats and talking points

BBC Sport explores some of the major talking points surrounding the opening day fixture between Unai Emery's Aston Villa and Eddie Howe's Newcastle United, with both clubs experiencing a turbulent pre-season. Only goal difference separated these sides in 2024-25, with Newcastle returning to the Champions League by finishing fifth and denying Aston Villa the chance to repeat their run to last season's quarter-finals. But the two clubs to disrupt the established order in recent years have struggled to build on their success this were fined £9.5m by Uefa in July for breaching the European governing body's financial rules last season, including spending more than the permitted 80% of income on player wages. Reports suggest they have also sold their women's team to parent company V Sports to comply with the Premier League's profitability and sustainability regulations (PSR)."There are rules which are pretty much unfair if you ask me," said Villa captain John McGinn when asked about PSR earlier this month. "We have got owners who want to invest in the team and want to spend to kick the club on, but they are not allowed to do it." Forward Evann Guessand is Villa's only major signing for an initial £26m and key midfielder Boubacar Kamara has signed a new contract, but there were no significant outgoings until the imminent £40m sale to Newcastle of boyhood Villa fan Jacob is Unai Emery's sixth transfer window since he took charge in November 2022 and in that time Villa's net spend is negative, with the club £10.7m in profit once Ramsey's departure is accounted for. By comparison, Chelsea's net spend in that same timeframe totals more than half a have also endured a turbulent summer with a string of failed bids for high-profile make matters worse, star striker Alexander Isak is reportedly attempting to force through a move to Liverpool. The Magpies rejected a £110m bid for the Swede who will not feature this scored 23 times and provided six assists in last season's Premier League and was directly involved in more than 40% of the club's total league goals, scoring 33.85% of his output will be a tough ask as no other Newcastle player reached doubles figures for league goals last season. The nearest was winger Harvey Barnes with nine. The Magpies have at least strengthened their squad with the additions of winger Anthony Elanga, 23, and centre-back Malick Thiaw, 24, plus a loan deal for goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. Despite the new additions, Eddie Howe's side face a tricky opener and have lost five of their last six visits to Villa Villa ended the season on a 21-match unbeaten home streak across all competitions (W15, D6), their longest since a run of 24 games between September 1976 and May 1977. Phil Parkinson issues update ahead of West Brom game

The Baggies make the trip to North Wales tomorrow for Wrexham's first home game in the Championship. The Reds got over the disappointment at Southampton with a penalty win against Hull City in the week. On Thursday, the signing of Welsh international Nathan Broadhead was announced, and today Parkinson gave an update as to whether he could be involved tomorrow. He said: "He (Broadhead) only came in yesterday morning, he didn't do a lot of training because of the travelling and the medical, so we were careful with him and we'll integrate him into the squad. "He's signed and registered on time and he goes straight into the squad." Another summer signing, Moore, went off injured at St Mary's last week, but the Reds boss said the big striker's injury isn't as bad as initially thought. "Kieffer's' not as bad as first feared, so that's really good news for us, so we'll keep monitoring him," said Parkinson. "Kev's working on getting the swelling out of the joint, but day by day he's getting better and whenever you have an ankle ligament injury like that you always fear it could be something worse, but it's not a serious injury and he's making good progress." Following the addition of Broadhead, the Reds boss admitted that it's likely there will be further outgoings at the SToK Cae Ras. He added: "With the numbers there's inevitably one or two players moving on at the right time for us and them."

Ryan Reynolds warned football club will make 'bigger and more special' rise than Wrexham

Wrexham have been told that the achievements of a non-league football club could soon eclipse their own, with the owners of Truro City claiming their rise is 'bigger' and 'more special' Wrexham's Hollywood owners have been told that the achievements of a non-league football club could soon overshadow their own. Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac have guided the Red Dragons to remarkable success over the past four years following three consecutive promotions. ‌ The pair of actors have transformed the Welsh side from National League also-rans into a Championship outfit with dreams of Premier League football on the horizon. But the owner of National League outfit Truro City has now insisted their ascent is "bigger" and "more special" than Wrexham 's. ‌ Canadian entrepreneur Eric Perez assumed control of the club in November 2023 as part of the Ontario Inc consortium. Truro clinched the National League South crown in April this year during the new ownership's maiden full campaign at the club. ‌ By doing so, they became the first Cornish side to secure promotion to non-league's highest division, with Perez believing that makes their achievements more significant than Wrexham's. "I think what we're doing is even more special than what they've done," Perez told BBC Radio Cornwall. "There are, at the end of the day, five league clubs from Wales. There's only one club in Cornwall that's even close to the Football League. If we could get there, it would be something that would change Cornwall forever. "It would weave a patch into the cultural tapestry of a place that has been alive and vibrant for 3,000 years. To be able to do something like that is, to me, what life is all about, so I actually feel like this is bigger than Wrexham could ever be." Alongside securing triumph on the field, Perez and Truro's other backers have been working hard to enhance the club's facilities. A new stadium was constructed on the city's outskirts approximately 12 months ago to stage the side's fixtures, with additional development occurring this summer. In contrast to Reynolds and Mac, Perez brings prior expertise in managing sporting organisations, having previously owned Cornwall's rugby league outfit and maintained connections with Toronto Wolfpack. Whilst Wrexham's remarkable rise may have captured King Charles's interest, prompting his visit to the Racecourse Ground in December 2022, Truro boast their own royal fan. ‌ Perez said: "It's just been such a journey. I remember when we first took over the club and we set out some goals, no-one really paid attention. I think everyone's paying attention now, because we are really on the cusp of something huge here playing our first home National League match. ‌ "It's been a super hectic off-season. First of all, we've had a stadium renovation that we've done, building a new main stand to accommodate what is now the requirements for this league. Then obviously transitioning the club from hybrid to full-time professional, that's been massive." Whether Truro can emulate Wrexham's success is yet to be seen. However, Perez is content with the club maintaining its position in the National League for now. Sign up to our newsletter!
