
You can reduce your risk for another heart attack with one simple step
Someone in the U.S. has a heart attack every 40 seconds, and heart disease is the nation's leading cause of death.
But researchers now say people who have suffered a heart attack can significantly reduce the risk of another one by following a seemingly simple course of action: get up and get moving.
'Sitting less and moving or sleeping a little more can make a real difference,' said Dr. Keith Diaz, a professor at Columbia University Medical Center and a volunteer member of the American Heart Association's Physical Activity Science Committee, in a statement Monday.
'More physical activity and more sleep are healthier than sitting, so we hope these findings support health professionals to move toward a more holistic, flexible and individualized approach for physical activity in patients after a heart attack or chest pain.'
Diaz was one of the coauthors of the study, which was funded by a National Institutes of Health grant and published in the American Heart Association's peer-reviewed scientific journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes.
What they found
To reach these conclusions, the authors examined the health of approximately 600 people between the ages of 21 to 96 who had been treated for a heart attack or chest pain at New York City's Columbia University Irving Medical Center. They used wrist accelerometers to track the amount of time each participant spent moving for an average of around a month after they were discharged from a hospital's emergency department. The accelerometer's measurements allowed researchers to infer the intensity of a participant's physical activity.
Any additional cardiac events or associated deaths were evaluated a year after they were discharged from the hospital the first time using phone surveys, electric health records, and the Social Security Death Index. Within the year, 8.2 percent of patients experienced a cardiac event or died.
They found that those in the group with the lowest activity levels – defined as spending more than 14 hours each day being sedentary – had a 2.58 times higher risk of having another heart problem or dying within the next year.
Researchers also found that 30 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous activity a day reduces the risk of adverse cardiovascular events or death by 61 percent.
Even 30 minutes of light-intensity physical activity slashed the risk in half.
'These findings suggest sitting less and doing anything else – like taking a walk, cooking, playing with your dog or gardening – will help you stay healthier,' Dr. Bethany Barone Gibbs, a professor at West Virginia University, explained.
Getting 30 minutes of sleep also lowered the risk by 14 percent.
Poor sleep is a known risk factor for cardiovascular disease, which claims more lives each year in the U.S. than all forms of cancer and chronic lower respiratory disease combined, according to the American Heart Association's 2025 Statistical Update.
'We were surprised that replacing sedentary time with sleep also lowered risk. Sleep is a restorative behavior that helps the body and mind recover, which is especially important after a serious health event like a heart attack,' Diaz said.

Well, it just might be that you are at Everest base camp, complaining about the altitude and the cold, rather than looking up and thinking, 'Holy hell – this is the easy bit. We are going to have to equip ourselves to get up that mountain – as a team.' Brace yourself, Infuriated: your parents are only going to get more frustrating and, probably, crosser. Information is only going to become more opaque. They will likely continue to ignore your advice, and you have no real idea how it's all going to play out. You have little agency here. And, quite frankly (here's the shocking bit), they may be old, but it's still their life and their business. We are telling you right at the top of this column: choose love. Let go of any illusion that you are going to somehow wrestle control, or that you are going to say one thing and all the cards are going to magically fall into place. Instead, be a sympathetic ear, listen without judgment and don't wear yourself out before you even start the real climb. Do you remember what it was like being a teenager? You might have teenagers now and are watching them do all sorts of stupid things (as you once did). Did you listen to advice then? Are your teenagers taking notes and nodding enthusiastically as you dispense your wisdom, telling them they should put their studies first or eat more greens or go for a walk? What you wanted from your parents then was just love and minimal intervention, and this is what they want from you now: an understanding ally for when getting a doctor's appointment is impossible, the hospital parking is impossible and the price of whatever is impossible. They don't want your projections or your spreadsheets, just as you didn't want theirs. Sometimes all you need to do is learn how to listen to people complain or wobble, without immediately leaping to offer advice or to fix it. It's also important to remember that your parents, frustrating and teetering as they may be, might not be ready to sign over their lives; to hand over their decisions; to sell the home they have spent 50 years maintaining. Even though you may feel strongly that you're right, it's a decision that you would make within the context of your life right now – when you are busy and organised and energised. You may not make the same decision 35 years down the line. So, deep breaths. Listen. If you are still desperate to 'help', you could try a subtle approach. When they're not in the middle of downloading their discontent while also rejecting any advice, you might be able to say something like, 'By the way, if you would like to create a bible of all your passwords, bank accounts and insurance details, so it's all there for you in one place, I'd be really happy to do it.' Make these kinds of suggestions far away from any exasperation or conflict, not when they're moaning about something you've heard them drone on about before, while you are already fizzing and furious. Instead, try 'I was just thinking, would it be helpful if I did this?' You might get a no every time. But one yes might slip through. We know this is not easy, dear Irritated. While you are busy trying and failing to take care of them in the way you wish to, you are also going to have to honour your own sense of being a child. Respect the fact that, while you're responding as a frustrated midlifer who understands things such as power of attorney, you're also responding as a teenager who finds everything your parents do intolerable, and as a five-year-old who loves them more than you love anyone – and thinks that they can solve every problem in the world. All those things are happening at the same time. And that is what makes this painful. Love your parents and communicate with your siblings, because this is only going to get more arduous and, ultimately, sad. You and your siblings should try to be a cohesive, united front who can share and support each other, whatever is coming your way. Your parents are going to do what they are going to do. It might get hairy, but really, after all is said and done, you want to be left with good relationships. Choose love, not lectures; and look for the glimmers. You will need them to see you through this.

A 24-year-old woman who suffered a heart attack has revealed how the near-death experience changed her life forever - but not in a way she ever suspected. Raquel Hutt, a New York-based influencer, developed severe shooting pain in her left arm in August 2024. As she screamed in the 'worst pain of my life', Hutt's mother called an ambulance and emergency responders - who initially believed she was suffering from a panic attack. Hutt's symptoms were repeatedly dismissed by healthcare workers until test results showed she had elevated troponin levels - a protein found in cells in the heart muscle that is released when those cells are damaged. Doctors found she had excessive troponin in her heart at the time - indicating the organ had suffered damage. Eventually, doctors revealed Hutt had suffered from a massive heart attack despite being healthy and regularly working out. Now, nearly a year later, doctors have cleared her to 'start living my life in a more regular way,' but said there are still things that would be forever changed about her body. Shocked at learning what she could no longer do, Hutt revealed experts have advised her to avoid performing strenuous activities such as giving birth vaginally and lifting heavy weights, and told her she can no longer get breast implants. The American Heart Association reports about 48 percent of Americans are living with some type of cardiovascular disease and CVD is the number one killer in the US - accounting for about one in five deaths. While heart attacks in young people are still relatively rare, experts say that now one in five heart attack patients are younger than 40 years of age. They also note heart attacks have increased by about 66 percent among people aged 18 to 44 since 2019. In a TikTok video, Hutt said: 'The first thing 100 percent I cannot do is get a boob job. 'I've always wanted one but I can't have anything in my chest. I can't have any type of surgery.' Doctors advise those with a history of heart attacks to abstain from unnecessary surgery as they may have a higher risk of complications during and after the procedure, such as blood clots, infections or those related to anesthesia. Breast implants can also obstruct the view of the heart during an echocardiography - a test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create pictures of the heart - making it difficult to assess heart function. The Sadeghi Center for Plastic Surgery in Los Angeles explained: 'Any surgical procedure can put additional stress on the heart and those with heart conditions may be at a higher risk of complications during and after surgery.' Experts also say patients with a history of heart attacks may also experience increased blood loss during procedures and require more postoperative care and monitoring. Hutt went on to say she has to refrain from giving birth vaginally and will need to undergo a C-section or use a surrogate if she plans to have children. She said: 'This is a pretty big one. I can't do a valsalva, which is like when you bear down and really got to push. 'Like when you're in the bathroom or in a plank and squeezing your whole body. I can't do that. You also do it during childbirth.' The Valsalva maneuver is a technique involving forceful exhalation against a closed airway, such as by closing the mouth and pinching the nose. The technique is meant to help equalize pressure in the ears, alleviate hiccups and in some cases, help return a heart rhythm back to normal. However, during childbirth, women are asked to take a deep breath and hold it while bearing down with all their strength during contractions. This allows the baby to be pushed through the birth canal with more ease. But the technique can also lead to changes in blood pressure and other physiological responses, which can put women with a history of heart attacks at high risk of suffering another one. Lastly, Hutt told viewers she cannot lift any weights or objects heavier than 10lbs. In day-to-day life, a large bag of sugar, rice or flour, a sack of potatoes, a medium-sized bowling ball or even a large watermelon can weigh 10lbs. But lifting heavy objects, especially with a sudden and forceful movement, can cause a rapid rise in blood pressure and heart rate. This is because the body is working harder to supply oxygen to the muscles, which can stress the heart and lead to another attack. Heavy lifting often also involves isometric exercise, where muscles contract. This type of exercise can lead to even greater blood pressure spikes and increased heart strain. The Heart Foundation advises: 'Lifting weights and resistance training improves your muscle mass and strength. 'Always speak to your doctor, nurse, health worker or cardiac rehabilitation team before starting any muscle strengthening exercises. They will give you advice about what weight is suitable and safe for you to lift. 'You can improve your strength at home by lifting light weights, such as cans of tinned food or bags of rice. You can also lift your body weight by doing exercises such as lunges, squats or push-ups. As with any activity, start slowly and build up gradually.'

Study connects career choice to depression rates
A study analyzing survey data from 536,279 workers across 37 states from 2015 to 2019 examined the relationship between careers and depression rates. The study found that people in community and social service roles had the highest rate of lifelong diagnosed depression at 20.5 percent, followed by food prep and serving jobs at 20.1 percent. Other industries with high rates of diagnosed depression included arts, entertainment, sports, media, accommodation and food services, retail trade, and legal, education, and library jobs. Industries with lower depression rates were mining, construction, and agriculture and engineering, though mining and construction have the highest suicide rates, possibly due to stigma or limited access to mental health services. A separate report from Resume Genius in December 2024 identified low-stress, high-paying jobs requiring at least a Bachelor's degree, including water source specialist, astronomer, actuary, environmental economist, mathematician, and geographer.
