England have been docked two points in the ICC World Test Championship for maintaining a poor over rate during the third Test against India at Lord's. But former England captain Michael Vaughan has questioned why India were not punished despite also being equally slow.
England won the Lord's Test by 22 runs, taking their tally to 24 points from three matches. But after the ICC's penalty, their points have dropped to 22 out of a possible 36, and their percentage has gone down from 66.67 to 61.11 percent. Because of this, England have slipped from second to third place in the WTC standings, with Sri Lanka moving up to second behind leaders Australia.

Vaughan slams ICC
Vaughan took to his official social media handle to express his disappointment, saying that both teams had poor over rates at Lord's and questioning why only England were penalised while India escaped punishment.
'Let's be honest both teams over rates at Lords were very very poor .. How only 1 team has been reprimanded is beyond me,' Vaughan wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The ICC said England were punished under Article 16.11.2 of the WTC playing conditions. The rule says that a team is penalised one point for each over short after time allowances are considered.
Apart from losing two points, England's players have also been fined 10 percent of their match fee.
WTC 2025-27 standings
Australia are currently on top of the table with 100 percent points after winning all their three matches in this cycle. Sri Lanka are second, England third, and India are fourth with one win from three Tests (33.33%). Bangladesh are fifth with 16.67 percent.
West Indies are sixth after losing all three of their matches against Australia so far. New Zealand, Pakistan, and defending champions South Africa are yet to start their campaigns in the new cycle.

ENG vs IND: Bumrah playing fifth Test would be a ‘great deal for us', says Shubman Gill

India captain Shubman Gill said it would be a big deal for the team if pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah manages to play the series-deciding fifth Test despite the team's original plan to restrict him to three matches. Bumrah, who suffered a stress reaction earlier in the year, was initially scheduled to feature in only three Tests on the long England tour to manage his workload and prevent further injuries. He missed the second Test at Edgbaston but played in the other three. With England leading the series 2-1 after a draw in Manchester, India must win at The Oval to level the five-match contest. 'If he feels like he's fully fit and available for us, I think it would be a great deal for us,' Gill told BBC's Test Match Special. 'If he's not playing, I still think we have the right kind of bowling attack,' Gill added. Bumrah bowled 33 overs in the fourth Test at Old Trafford and has approximately four and a half days to recover for the final match, which begins on July 31. He has bowled 119.4 overs in five innings across three Test matches so far, which is roughly 24 overs per innings. However, given that he is India's joint highest wicket-taker in the series with 14 scalps, including two five-wicket hauls from three matches, the team may be tempted to bring him back for the finale. Former England captain Alastair Cook believes Gill made the right tactical decision by not revealing whether Bumrah would play the fifth and final Test of the series. 'Even if he isn't going to play, you wouldn't tell people now, just on a purely tactical basis,' Cook said. 'They made a mistake at the beginning of the series, saying he could only play three, because you get thrown into a situation like now where the series is still on the line. If he's not fit to play, not playing is the right decision,' he added. India head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed that all fast bowlers are available for selection ahead of the Oval Test and didn't rule out Bumrah featuring in a fourth match. 'All the fast bowlers are there. There is no injury scare,' Gambhir asserted on Sunday. 'We haven't had any conversation around the combination for the last Test. 'No decision has been made on whether Jasprit Bumrah will play or not. Ultimately, whoever plays, they will try and do the job for the country,' he added. After the Lord's Test, India suffered a spate of setbacks, with Arshdeep Singh nursing a blow to his bowling hand, Akash Deep ruled out with a groin issue, and Mohammed Siraj battling general fatigue. All-rounder Nitesh Kumar Reddy was also ruled out of the series. As a result, India had to fly in reinforcements from home. Anshul Kamboj joined the squad and was preferred over Prasidh Krishna in the playing XI.

'Those Who Doubted Shubman Gill, Lack Knowledge Of...': Gautam Gambhir Blasts Critics

Last Updated: Addressing the media after the draw, head coach Gautam Gambhir slammed the critics and said the team never doubted Shubman Gill. BCCI's move to hand Test captaincy to Shubman Gill wasn't met with universal acceptance. The 25-year-old was supposed to replace someone like Rohit Sharma and tasked to manage a team in the absence of someone like Virat Kohli. Amid doubts, Gill kicked off his captaincy career on a high, individually, scoring 3 centuries in 2 Tests – losing the first before winning the next. After scoring above 600 runs in just 2 matches, he seemed to have lost his rhythm in the Lord's Test. Gill scored 16 and 6 in the third Test and then got out for 12 in the first innings of the fourth Test at Old Trafford. But just when it appeared that one was seen the best of Gill on the tour, he roared back with another terrific knock to become the first Indian batter to score a hundred at Old Trafford since 1990. Addressing the media after the draw, head coach Gautam Gambhir slammed the critics and said the team never doubted Gill. 'Nobody [in the Indian team] ever doubted Shubman Gill's talent. Those who did, they just know to talk cricket but lack understanding of the game. Some people take time to blossom in international cricket. And no one in the dressing room is surprised by what he has done. And had he not done anything extraordinary, no one would have doubted him even then," Gambhir said in the presser. Gambhir further said that the people who have doubts about Gill lack knowledge of cricket. 'People who understand cricket, they know what kind of player Gill is, and he is living up to his expectations. And people speak of captaincy pressure, you can't see anything of that sort. When he goes out to bat, he goes out as a batter and not as a captain," he added. India secured a thrilling draw at Old Trafford as Ravindra Jadeja (107*) and Washington Sundar (101*) batted through two sessions. After trailing by 311 runs, India fought back through Gill (103) and Rahul (90). Their resistance has kept India's hopes of ending the series on a high, setting up a mouth-watering finale at The Oval. view comments First Published: July 28, 2025, 09:52 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
