2025 College Football predictions: Why Clemson is a national title contender
Every summer, there is a group of college football teams that become hype machines.
Whether it be due to a new coaching hire, a strong finish to the previous season, or because of the transfer portal, there's always a handful of programs that become trendy, and that love seeps into the betting market.
Last summer, Florida State and Utah had their bandwagons full by Week 1, only to go a combined 7-17, with the Seminoles footing the table in the ACC.
Other trendy teams from last summer, like Texas, SMU, and Tennessee, fared much better, but the point is that just because a program becomes a popular pick in the offseason doesn't guarantee that it will make good on that promise when school is back in session.
We've identified a few teams that have become trendy this summer and will discuss whether or not they will live up to the hype in the fall.

2025 College Football predictions
Florida Gators
It's been a while since Florida has been relevant. The Gators haven't won an SEC Championship since 2008, and they've gone 25-26 in the last four seasons.
Pressure was starting to build up on head coach Billy Napier before the 2024 campaign, but he was able to save his bacon with a strong finish en route to an 8-5 campaign against a brutal schedule.
Not only did Florida's four-game winning streak to close out 2024 likely save Napier's job, but it also turned some heads and put the Gators on the radar for 2025.
A huge part of Florida's turnaround in 2024 was the play of quarterback DJ Lagway, who is getting considerable Heisman hype heading into his sophomore season.
Lagway gives the Gators a high ceiling, but the problem is that, once again, Florida is going to go up against one of the toughest schedules in the nation.
According to ESPN's Bill Connelly, only Oklahoma will face a more daunting path than the Gators in 2025.
There are some positive signs in the Swamp, but Florida's schedule makes it really hard to get caught up in the hype surrounding the Gators for 2025.
The Verdict: Pass
Clemson Tigers
Dabo Swinney and Clemson re-emerged with a trip to the College Football Playoff in 2024, and all signs point to another step forward in 2025.
The Tigers are 11/1 to win the National Championship at FanDuel Sportsbook, and they are the clear favorites to win the ACC.

Those may seem like steep prices to pay on the Tigers, but there's reason to believe that Clemson is going to be a force to be reckoned with in 2025.
The biggest positive for the Tigers is that they lead the country in returning production at 81 percent.
For a program that's been hesitant to dip into the portal, it's a huge positive that Clemson is bringing back so many snaps from 2024.
In addition to the stability, the Tigers will also go up against a manageable schedule in the ACC this season.
The Tigers are already getting plenty of love in the betting market, but it's warranted. Watch out for Cade Klubnik and Clemson in 2025.
Verdict: National Title Contender

Illinois Fighting Illini
Everybody is wondering who will be this year's Arizona State or Indiana, and Illinois is going to be a popular answer to that question.
The Illini went 10-3 in 2024 and wrapped up the season by defeating South Carolina in the Citrus Bowl.
That may be a sign of things to come for the Illini, who rank third in returning production, have a stud quarterback in Luke Altmyer, and will play as easy a schedule as you could hope for in the Big Ten in 2025.
Illinois won't have the talent to go up against the heavyweights in the Playoff, but they have legitimate hopes of making it to the Big Ten Championship, making the 40/1 (BetMGM Sportsbook) on the Illini to win the conference quite tempting.
Verdict: Big Ten Dark Horse

Chiefs vs. Seahawks: QB Gardner Minshew finds veteran TE Robert Tonyan for TD in Seattle
The Kansas City Chiefs are in the midst of a tight game against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2 of the 2025 NFL preseason. After a slow start that saw the Chiefs down 14-0 in the first quarter of Friday's tilt, Kansas City's offense began to claw its way back as the game approached halftime. Trailing with only ten minutes left in the half, quarterback Gardner Minshew manufactured a near-perfect drive that ended in a touchdown pass to veteran tight end Robert Tonyan in the red zone. Take a look at the connection, which was posted to Twitter by the Chiefs' official account: Despite a close game, Kansas City's defense has staggered against a much-improved Seattle team and will need to rely on its experience to stop quarterback Sam Darnold and company. Stay tuned to see if the reigning AFC champions can recover from last week's loss and head back to western Missouri with a win. Sam Darnold plays one series, completes all four passes
Sam Darnold got his feet wet, playing 10 plays on one possession in the Seahawks' second preseason game. The quarterback, who signed with the Seahawks in the offseason, did not throw the ball down the field with air yards of minus-5, minus-1, 1 and 4 yards on his four attempts. But he was perfect. Darnold went 4-for-4 for 34 yards, connecting with four different receivers. Fullback Robbie Ouzis caught one for 13 yards, tight end Elijah Arroyo one for 9, wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba one for 7 and tight end AJ Barner one for 5. Zach Charbonnet ran for 45 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown, on five carries on the 81-yard drive that gave the Seahawks a 7-0 lead over the Chiefs. The Seahawks faced only one third down and sent rookie quarterback Jalen Milroe out for the quarterback sneak with Darnold lined up at running back. Milroe gained 2 yards. Drew Lock replaced Darnold on the second possession. Darnold did not play in the preseason opener.

Brooks scores on interception return as Ward has mixed results in Titans' 23-20 win over Falcons
ATLANTA (AP) — Kendell Brooks scored on a 53-yard interception return and rookie quarterback Cameron Ward had mixed results as the Tennessee Titans beat the Atlanta Falcons 23-20 in a preseason game Friday night. Joey Slye's 23-yard field goal with 9:03 remaining gave Tennessee (1-1) the lead. Falcons backup quarterback Emory Jones was stopped on a fourth-down run near the Tennessee 20 with 2:57 remaining. Jones was shaken up on the hit by linebacker Amari Burney and cornerback Jemari Harris. Jones walked off the field with assistance. Ward played three series and completed 2 of 7 passes for 42 yards. Ward's highlight was a 35-yard completion to Elic Ayomanor on the Titans' opening series. Ward, the No. 1 overall pick in this year's NFL draft, had another long pass dropped by Van Jefferson. The teams traded third-quarter touchdowns. Jemar Jefferson's 16-yard scoring run, which capped a 13-play drive, gave the Titans a 20-13 lead. Easton Stick, who played the first three quarters for Atlanta, threw a 52-yard scoring pass to Chris Blair to tie the game. Brandon Allen, who played behind Ward, threw a 25-yard scoring pass to tight end Gunnar Helm late in the first half. Nathan Carter produced the Falcons' first touchdown with a 43-yard run in the third quarter. Younghoe Koo kicked field goals of 42 and 36 yards for Atlanta (0-2). Just watching Among the Titans held out on offense were RB Tony Pollard, WRs Calvin Ridley and Tyler Lockett, RG Kevin Zeitler. Center Lloyd Cushenberry, who passed his physical Monday as he continues his return from an Achilles tendon injury, participated in pregame drills but did not play. Atlanta's top two quarterbacks, starter Michael Penix Jr. and backup Kirk Cousins, sat out for the second straight preseason game after receiving the bulk of the snaps in team drills in two joint practices against the Titans this week. RB Bijan Robinson and WRs Drake London and Ray-Ray McCloud also were spectators. Falcons rookie edge rusher Jalon Walker was held out after playing last week in a 17-10 loss to Detroit. Long road home The game completed a string of nine nights away from home for the Titans, who had a joint practice at Tampa Bay last week before their 29-7 loss to the Buccaneers. Backup QB shuffle Trevor Siemian, who was signed Monday, took over at quarterback for Tennessee in the fourth quarter and led the drive capped by Slye's go-ahead field goal. Siemian spent much of 2024 on the Titans' practice squad. He replaced Tim Boyle, who was released after completing only 4 of 13 passes for 24 yards with two interceptions against the Buccaneers. Stick, competing for Atlanta's No. 3 quarterback job, completed 15 of 25 passes for 145 yards with one touchdown and the one interception returned for a touchdown by Brooks. Allen completed 11 of 14 passes for 119 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Up next Titans: Following two road games, the Titans host Minnesota next Friday night.
