Set in the vibrant and mystical city of New Orleans, Coven Academy follows three teenage witches-in-training who are bound by destiny to protect their city from ancient supernatural threats. According to the official synopsis, the trio must unravel dark secrets, master unpredictable magic, face off against rival students—and still navigate the emotional rollercoaster of growing up.
The series features Malina Pauli Weissman (A Series of Unfortunate Events) as Briar and Tiffani Thiessen (White Collar, 90210) as Miss Graves. The ensemble also includes Malachi Barton (Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires) as Jake, Louis Thresher (Boarders) as Ollie, Jordan Leftwich (Family Switch) as Sasha, and Ora Duplass (Their Town) as Tegan.
Recurring guest stars include Brendon Tremblay (Descendants: Wicked Wonderland) as Alexander, Swayam Bhatia (Zombies 4) as McKenna, and Keegan Connor Tracy (Once Upon a Time) as Tamora.
'I pitched Coven Academy as a love letter to the YA shows I adored growing up,' Federle said in a statement. 'I'm excited to bring this original story to life alongside my longtime partners at Disney and a truly magical cast and crew.'
Disney Branded Television president Ayo Davis added, 'Coven Academy blends supernatural intrigue with relatable themes of friendship, self-discovery, and teen challenges. Under Tim's visionary leadership, this show continues our tradition of telling stories that resonate with today's youth.'
The show is part of Federle's renewed overall deal with Disney Branded Television. He also serves as executive producer on the upcoming Vampirina: Teenage Vampire series, debuting September 12, and is currently directing the sequel to Romy and Michele's High School Reunion and writing the stage musical adaptation of The Greatest Showman.
Federle wrote, directed, and executive produced the Coven Academy pilot alongside Kimberly McCullough and Bronwyn North-Reist of Chorus Boy Productions.

Disney's new ESPN app reaches for sports fans outside cable TV

LOS ANGELES: Walt Disney's ESPN will deliver its full range of sports programming outside of pay TV for the first time starting on Thursday, when the network debuts an app designed to be a hub for live games and personalized news, stats and highlights. The ESPN app is Disney's effort to capture some of the tens of millions of customers that the pioneering sports channel has lost since 2010 during the streaming TV revolution. ESPN executives said they have tailored the new offering, which is far broader than the limited ESPN+ app launched in 2018, to cater to the tastes of today's sports fans. 'We know that fans don't just want to watch,' ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro told reporters. 'They want an experience. They want to interact.' The app will offer more than 47,000 live events each year from the NFL, NBA, WNBA, NHL, college football, tennis, golf and other sports. It will cost $30 per month. An introductory offer will include ad-supported versions of the Disney+ and Hulu streaming services for free. Fans can enter their favorite teams and sports for customization such as a personalized version of the 'SportsCenter' news and recap show. Artificial intelligence will generate narration based on the voices of ESPN anchors. A new feature called 'Verts,' or scroll-ready, vertical video highlights, also can be tailored. Stats for a user's fantasy players will be displayed next to live games. And an ESPN Bet tab will show live, settled and upcoming bets for users who have linked their betting accounts. Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger has called the app 'a sports fan's dream.' Industry analysts see it as a chance for the company to pick up fans who do not subscribe to cable, and they do not expect it will pull masses from pay TV. ESPN was available in 100 million homes through pay TV in 2010. In July of this year, that number stood at about 61 million. 'It's another step in Disney's pivot to (streaming) and the importance to streaming to the overall company,' said MoffettNathanson analyst Robert Fishman. ESPN will promote the app extensively. Actor John Cena will star in commercials that stress 'All of ESPN. All in One Place.' Pop Mart sees revenue hitting over $4bn this year, to launch mini Labubus Pay television will 'remain a big part' of ESPN's business, Pitaro said. For the quarter that ended in June, ESPN accounted for $1 billion of Disney's $4.6 billion in operating income, or nearly 22%. Most of ESPN's revenue came from fees paid by cable and satellite distributors and from advertising. Subscribers to pay TV will have access to the new ESPN app. Pitaro said the company hoped to drive all of its customers to the app 'because that's by far the best, the most holistic experience.'

Orlando Bloom rooting for return of original cast in sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film

Orlando Bloom has voiced his support for reuniting the original Pirates of the Caribbean cast in the franchise's long-awaited sixth installment. During an appearance at Fan Expo Chicago, as reported by Entertainment Weekly, Bloom emphasized the importance of a strong script and expressed hope for the return of co-stars Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley. 'Everything is in the writing, right? Everything is on the page,' Bloom said. 'I would personally love to see everybody back. I think the way to win on that one is to get everybody back — if they can, and if everybody wanted to go back.' Bloom, Knightley, and Depp first appeared in the original 2003 film The Curse of the Black Pearl, which launched the billion-dollar franchise. While Depp's Jack Sparrow continued on through the later sequels, Bloom and Knightley only briefly returned in a post-credits scene in 2017's Dead Men Tell No Tales. The five films have collectively grossed $4.5 billion worldwide. Bloom also acknowledged the franchise's evolving direction, noting Disney's previous interest in new storylines. 'What they're thinking…is how to do it. Do you bring in a female leading character that replicates Jack in some way? I don't know,' he said. 'The jury is out on how to do it again, but if [the script] was great, [I'd be in].' In 2020, Variety reported that Disney was developing two new Pirates projects: a reboot led by Margot Robbie and a sixth film continuing the original storyline. Robbie later told Vanity Fair in 2022 that Disney had seemingly moved away from her female-led version, though producer Jerry Bruckheimer later said there's still potential for both projects. Bruckheimer recently confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that a screenplay for the sixth film is still in development, and he remains open to bringing Depp back as Sparrow. 'If he likes the way the part's written, I think he would do it,' Bruckheimer said. 'We just got to get the right screenplay. We haven't quite gotten there yet, but we're close.'

Rick Riordan hints final Percy Jackson book could be his last

Rick Riordan has given fans a long-awaited update on the future of Percy Jackson, but the news is bittersweet. The beloved author revealed that the third and final instalment of his Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The College Recommendation Letters trilogy will not be released until 2027. More significantly, he suggested that this may be the final chapter in Percy's story, signalling the possible end of a series that has captivated readers for nearly two decades. Riordan explained that the delay was due to his many other commitments, including the Disney+ adaptation of his original five-book saga. While seasons two and three of the series are in production, Riordan has also been busy expanding the universe with new stories, such as the upcoming The Court of the Dead, which follows fan favourite Nico di Angelo. These projects pushed Percy's concluding book further down the timeline, and Riordan was candid that he cannot promise more adventures for the son of Poseidon beyond this trilogy. The current arc follows Percy during his senior year as he attempts to secure divine letters of recommendation for college, aided by Annabeth. But Riordan has stated that he does not intend to write stories set during Percy and Annabeth's college years. He explained that his focus remains firmly on middle-grade audiences, noting that writing beyond that age range is not where he feels most effective. Fans have long speculated whether Riordan would continue Percy's story indefinitely, but the author stressed that this trilogy was always meant to be three books. He admitted that the idea first came as a way to encourage the greenlight for the television series. With the adaptation now secured and a wealth of spin-offs exploring other characters, Percy's journey may truly be nearing its end. As Riordan put it, 'I don't want to mess it up. My sweet spot is middle grade.' For many readers, the possibility that the next Percy Jackson book could be the last makes the wait until 2027 all the more poignant.
