Sarah Silverman Reveals How Conan O'Brien Saved Her Career After ‘SNL' Firing
Silverman joined the show's 19th season, which aired from 1993 to 1994. She was let go after just one year.
During an appearance on Howard Stern's Sirius XM show on Thursday, Silverman described 'SNL' as 'magical' and 'amazing,' but said there are some very clear downsides.
'There is just something about it where they just have this energy that puts you in your place where you feel like a piece of shit and you're terrified,' Silverman said.
'And, the anxiety — it's very hard to be zen and chill there,' she said, telling Stern that 'Conan was the best thing for me.'
'His first year [on his show] was my first and only year at 'SNL,'' she said. 'And he put me on all the time, you know, even after I was fired ― all the time. And that was the start for me.'
'And I wouldn't have been able to be on Conan without 'SNL,'' Silverman added. 'It was an incredible kind of boot camp experience.'
The experience was so incredible, the 'Maestro' actor said she was 'totally thrown for a loop when I was fired.'
'It never occurred to me that was possible,' Silverman said. 'But, I think it's definitely for the best.'
During an appearance on HuffPost Live in 2013, the actor shared that she 'was hired at SNL and almost immediately fired,' and joked that she knows why.
'I wrote not a single funny sketch, so that might have something to do with it too' Silverman quipped of her time on the show, adding that 'the fact that Lorne Michaels saw anything in me at that age' was 'impressive.'
'I'm getting over it though, it's been 20 years,' Silverman joked.
The comedian would later come back to host the show in October 2014, during the 40th season of 'Saturday Night Live.'

An 'unnamed source' noted, 'Sirius and Stern are never going to meet on the money he is going to want. It's no longer worth the investment.' While SiriusXM once drew plenty of investors looking for growth, these days, it tends to pull in more investors looking for long-term value. A combination of low valuation and decent quarterly dividends has made it attractive, and solid cash flow makes the dividends likely to stick. That is especially true if it can keep expenses low by not paying ridiculous fees to a handful of celebrities. Beating the Lawsuits But SiriusXM is coming off a bigger win that just saved it around $150 million, when SoundExchange accused Sirius of failing to pay royalties on music. Word from the US District Court for the Southern District of New York said that SoundExchange was not '…authorized to bring the royalty lawsuit under federal copyright law.' This might sound odd, given that SoundExchange is the '…recording industry's congressionally-designated collective rights organization.' But according to Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald, SoundExchange, seemingly by design, does not have litigation authority in its arsenal. Therefore, the suit pretty much fell flat on filing. Is SiriusXM Stock a Good Buy? Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Hold consensus rating on SIRI stock based on three Buys, three Holds, and five Sells assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. Lindsay Lohan Proves She's Always Been a Star in 'Freakier Friday' originally appeared on Parade. Anyone who went to a movie theater back in 1998 to see The Parent Trap left knowing that Lindsay Lohan had star quality, and that charisma, charm and sense of humor has not dulled one bit in the 27 years since. Though dogged by the paparazzi, mocked by late night hosts and forced into an acting hiatus, the Life-Size star never lost her spark. And now after a string of successful (and deliciously campy) Netflix rom-coms and a delightful cameo in the musicalversion of Mean Girls, the Lohanaissance is full underway. (Stay tuned for whenever Lorne Michaels decides to invite her back to join the Five Timers Club on Saturday Night Live). Lohan's triumphant return continues to build steam this weekend with the arrival of Freakier Friday, the long-awaited sequel to the 2003 body-swap comedy Freaky Friday. In the original, Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis play Anna and Tess Coleman, a teenage rockstar and her psychiatrist mother, who are forced to switch bodies in order to learn to appreciate each other. Lohan and the (now Oscar-winning) Curtis return as older versions of their characters from the original, who are working together to raise Anna's own teenage daughter Harper (Julia Butters) and her soon-to-be step-daughter Lily (Sophia Hammons). As you can imagine, Anna is now in the thick of her own mother/teenage daughter battles and more body-swapping is needed. While Freakier Friday is a flawed film on many levels, often failing to live up to its predecessor, it reminds viewers (yet again) just how natural, charming and funny Lohan is (and has always been) on screen. 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 The definitive flaw of Freakier Friday is largely unavoidable. The original's body-swap between a mother and daughter is such a clean and easy premise that it's simple to build jokes off of it. Adding more humans into the body-swapping mix makes the screenwriter's job all the harder, and rather than doing a three-generational round robin of bodies,writer Jordan Weiss opted to add a fourth to the mix for an even two vs. two swap. A tomboy surfer, Harper is upset with her mother for falling in love with Eric (Manny Jacinto), the father of Lily, a British fashionista and her school rival. Meanwhile Lily is angry at her father (as well as the Coleman clan) because the upcoming marriage will keep her from returning to England. When all four women meet a psychic named Madame Jen (Vanessa Bayer) at Anna's bachelorette party, they experience a cosmic earthquake that will yet again jumble their consciousnesses until they learn the universe's lessons. Only this time, Anna switches bodies with her own daughter Harper while Tess swaps with her soon-to-be step-granddaughter. Freakier Friday's primary problem is just how messy this body-swap is. In the original, Curtis gets to pretend to be a teenage slacker while Lohan takes on the persona of an uptight therapist. However, in the sequel neither of the adult characters are so extreme pre-swap. Lohan's Anna is an ex-rocker-turned-corporate exec while Curtis' Tess is a softer, kinder grandmother. When the younger girls take on those personas, the result lacks much of the original's humor and primarily relies on age jokes. Similarly, Harper doesn't have many defining traits other than she likes to surf, which doesn't utilize Lohan to the full extent of her capabilities either. Lily is easily the most larger-than-life character of the quartet, which provides Curtis with the most to do comedically post-swap. While this sets up Curtis with many of the movie's best gags, it's another head-scratching aspect of this script as her character is the most detached from the actual family dynamics. Related: These may seem like logistical nitpicks, but the muddled swap robs Freakier Friday of a portion of the clarity, heart and comedy the original possessed. It also keeps Anna and Tess (now in the bodies of teenagers) without much to do aside from slather themselves in sunscreen during a PE class (because old people are obsessed with not getting wrinkles and skin cancer. Get it?) Despite a less-than-optimal set-up, the film does manage to land some entertaining sequences, thanks largely to Lohan and a series of silly cameos. The teenagers, now in the bodies of the adults, decide to try and derail Anna's impending marriage with Eric, by reconnecting Anna with her high school boyfriend Jake (Chad Michael Murray), who now runs a record shop. Lohan's bad flirting with Murray while he's trying to flirt with Curtis is easily the funniest sequence of the movie, and sets up a sequence of gag's involving Jake's obsession with Tess that culminates in a laugh-out-loud call-back to the original film. In addition to a delightfully game Murray (lest we forget, the man appeared in Riverdale in an even more campy role), Bayer's turn as a gig economy psychic/Starbucks worker adds a jolt of humor whenever she appears. Mark Harmon as Tess's husband, Chloe Fineman as a dance instructorand Sherry Cola and George Wallace as pickleball announcers also make the most of their scenes. Related: Perhaps the most bizarre element of the movie, and one that never quite lands, involves Anna's pop star client Ella (Never Have I Ever's Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), who has recently gone through a breakup with her musician boyfriend. The teenagers (in the bodies of the adults) show up to a photo shoot and bond with Ella, encouraging her to continue performing despite the breakup. The plotline just adds another convoluted element to an already cluttered storyline, but it also goes all in on Lily's fashion designer dreams. However, every "fashionable" outfit in this movie is wacky as hell, with clothes made out of stuffed animals and giant metal stars that look like Lady Gaga's Kermit the Frog dress had a baby with Harper from Wizards of Waverly Place. While I appreciate the INSANE outfits, it is slightly ridiculous to present them as the work of a chic British teenager. Moreover, Curtis's costumes do not look like anything a Gen Z teen has ever worn, but rather the wardrobe of a Pokemon gym leader. Related: Despite a fairly confusing plot, Freakier Friday manages to end on a heartfelt and nostalgic note with all four women learning to understand the others and Anna performing once again with her high school band Pink Slip. The opening notes of "Take Me Away" are catnip for millennials and seeing Lohan thrive will bring a smile to the face of anyone who lived through 2008. Let's be honest. No one expected Freakier Friday to be as good as Freaky Friday so the fact that it manages to deliver a few genuinely funny moments, a heartfelt ending and a dazzling performance from Lohan is more than enough to satisfy audiences. Will this become a classic? No. But is it a good use of an August afternoon? Certainly. The singer who rose to fame playing the teen who secretly moonlighted as pop star Montana on the show that debuted on the Disney Channel on March 24, 2006, told SiriusXM's TikTok Radio recently that she's working on something 'really, really special' to commemorate the series' 20th anniversary. 'I want to design something really, really special for it because it really was the beginning of all of this that now sits here today,' Cyrus said to host Chris Olsen about the show's March 2026 anniversary. 'Without Hannah, there really wouldn't be this kind of… this me. It's so crazy to think, too, that I started as a character that I thought was going to be impossible to shed. And now that's something that when I walk into a space, it's looked at as this sense of nostalgia or something that you have from your childhood, but I've now been as kind of integrated into everyone's life as the character itself. So that's exciting to get to celebrate that.'
