FIFA Club World Cup is coming to Nashville's Geodis Park
The FIFA Club World Cup reaches Nashville later this week, with matches that will give fans a taste of elite soccer from across the globe.
Why it matters: Nashville missed out in its long-shot bid to host games for next year's World Cup. But a trio of Club World Cup matches from June 20-26 could give the city the opportunity to audition for other major sporting events down the road.
How it works: This FIFA-organized tournament brings together the best club teams from each continental confederation, whereas the larger World Cup will bring together squads that play for their countries.
Both instances offer a chance to see some serious soccer. Nashville's games are also likely to generate an influx of international tourism.
What he's saying: "This tournament will bring the world's best clubs to Nashville, showcasing our stadium, our city, and our passionate fanbase on a global stage," Nashville SC CEO Ian Ayre said in a statement when the games were announced.
"As we prepare to welcome fans from around the world, this moment reflects the growth of soccer in the U.S. and solidifies Nashville's place as a premier destination for world-class soccer."
Zoom in: The slate of teams coming to Geodis Park includes the LAFC of the MLS, Argentina's Boca Juniors and Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal. Tickets are still available.
By the numbers: The Club World Cup could bring $9.6 billion to the U.S., according to a FIFA analysis.
Nashville and the other host cities also each get $1 million to support local social projects.

This time, with one organization leading the charge, they're cooking up a different story. They started planning as early as last year. MERRIAM, Kan. — The Merriam City Council on Monday night discussed moving forward with a $102 million development project. The mixed-resident and retail development would be built at the site of the former Johnson County Library branch, just north of Shawnee Mission Parkway. 'That would be a really good idea because Mission has a grocery store and like, it's kind of a little far of a drive to get to another grocery store like in Shawnee and Quivira. So I think that would be really beneficial to the people that live here,' Cifuentes added. This development would be jointly owned between the city and Drake Development. The city is in line to issue at least $32 million in bonds to cover its side of the costs.
