Liverpool's Wirtz unfazed by huge price tag
LONDON : Florian Wirtz says his huge price tag 'doesn't matter' as he prepares for his first season in the Premier League after a switch to champions Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen.
The attacking midfielder arrived at Anfield for an initial £100 million that could rise to £116 million with add-ons, making his move a potential British record.
However, speaking after impressing in a 3-2 friendly win over Athletic Bilbao yesterday, the 22-year-old brushed off the size of his transfer fee.
'I don't think about it. I just want to play football and how much money the clubs pay between each other, it doesn't matter,' he said.
'Of course the big challenge is to win the title again and it is the most difficult thing so (I will) try and just create chances and also work against the ball.
'I can also run a lot so (I will) bring this to the team and then with the ball I can make the team better and bring my teammates into better situations.'
Liverpool face FA Cup winners Crystal Palace in the season-opening Community Shield on Sunday and kick off their Premier League title defence at home to Bournemouth on Aug 15.
Germany international Wirtz said he was relishing the challenge.
'There are some differences to Germany but I think there is also something I can learn and make me better so I am really looking forward to it,' he said.
'It's more intense and more physical, every player is really strong, really fast. That is what everybody is telling me.'
Big spenders
Liverpool have spent more than £250 million so far in the summer transfer window on a clutch of new players including Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, who also came from Leverkusen, and Giorgi Mamardashvili.
The club is understood to have made a bid of around £110 million plus potential add-ons for unsettled Newcastle striker Alexander Isak last week, which was rejected.
Manager Arne Slot said after two friendlies against Athletic Bilbao at Anfield yesterday that there was 'always room for improvement' despite the club's march to a record-equalling 20th league title last season.
'We've added a few, in my opinion, extra weapons,' said the Dutchman.
'So, Florian has a lot of creativity in the final third. We've lost with Trent (Alexander-Arnold, who has signed for Real Madrid) a lot of creativity from the back.
'Trent's crosses and picking out runners was so special – I think Flo has this quality as well in a totally different position.'
Liverpool paid tribute to late forward Diogo Jota in their first matches at Anfield since the forward and his brother Andre Silva died in a car crash in Spain last month.
Slot said in his programme notes that it had been a 'tough time for everyone connected with the club, but especially for Diogo's family, his wife, his children and friends'.
'We cannot imagine the pain that they have been going through, and the club will continue to give them all the support they can going forward,' he wrote.
'We will always carry him with us in our hearts, in our thoughts, wherever we go.'

Manchester United finished last season 15th in the Premier League, their worst showing since relegation in 1973-74, managing only 11 wins and nine drawn from 38 matches. 'I think a lot of people have suffered from this,' Fernandes said. 'The fans pay more for the tickets and we really appreciate all the efforts they do for us. 'So it's up to us now players to repay it on the pitch.' Fernandes said the club is working to improve from team and staff to facilities. 'It's every detail. Every small thing matters,' Fernandes said. 'At this football club, you can't do anything wrong on the pitch and off the pitch because it's too big worldwide. 'The culture of this club was winning. It was there. And we need to bring back that.' Everton's James Tarkowski brought down Amad Diallo in the penalty area and Fernandes blasted in the shot from the spot to lift Man United ahead 1-0 in the 19th minute. French-born Senegalese international Iliman Ndiaye equalised for the Toffees in the 40th minute, tapping in off a pass from Senegal's Idrissa Gana Gueye. Mason Mount, who entered the field barely 10 minutes earlier, took a pass from Fernandes and curled in a shot past Jordan Pickford in the 69th minute to put Manchester United back in front. But Everton pulled level in the 75h minute when a ball directed back by Diallo deflected off Manchester United Ayden Heaven and into the back of the Man United net for an own goal. Manager Ruben Amorim inserted newcomer Bryan Mbeumo into his starting lineup, the arrival from Brentford missing earlier matches to finish pre-season training.

Spot-on set up passes by Senegalese left back El Hadji Malick Diouf, signed only on July 15, led to both West Ham goals in the finale of their US pre-season tour at Atlanta. 'Both goals are down to him, the quality that he's got, you can see that,' Bowen said of Diouf. 'He has only been here a few weeks but you would think he has been here years. 'He's humble. He's a brilliant guy for the group and he's obviously a brilliant footballer as well. We're very excited to see what he can continue to do here.' Diouf's centering ball found England's Bowen in the box, but he was forced to slide a pass left to German teammate Fullkrug, who fired in a shot from point-blank range in the 24th minute. Bowen found the net in the 67th minute, taking a Diouf pass while making a run into the middle of the box then flicking a right-footed shot into the far left side of the goal. Bournemouth had plenty of chances in the first 15 minutes but found the woodwork to squander early opportunities. 'What I liked was the character about the group. We didn't have the best start we wanted but we stuck in there. We were together. We were a team,' Bowen said. 'That was one of the good things to see, the togetherness and the spirit when things aren't going as well at the start. You stick together, you motivate each other, you come through and you win the game.' West Ham lost 2-1 to Manchester United to open the round-robin friendly tournament but bounced back to defeat Everton 2-1. 'The positives are that we've had three really good, competitive games against Premier League opposition,' Bowen said. A second-half goal from Mason Mount had United on course for victory in Atlanta, Georgia after Fernandes's opener was cancelled out by Iliman Ndiaye, but a bizarre 75th-minute own goal by Ayden Heaven gifted Everton the draw on Sunday. The draw put a slight damper on the Old Trafford club's tour of the US, after promising victories over West Ham United and Bournemouth last month. 'It's been important for developing how we want to play and getting the new players involved too,' Fernandes told NBC Sports. 'We didn't want to finish in this way. Our performance wasn't the best and we were a little bit lazy today. 'We want to avoid that because with laziness you can pay at any moment,' Fernandes added. United had their worst-ever Premier League campaign in the 2024-2025 season, finishing 15th in the standings, and are looking to strengthen in the transfer window, signing Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo – both of whom started against Everton. 'It's improving. But it's not the place it needs to be. I don't want to take a dig at anyone but the club is doing the best they can in terms of the financial situation they talk about,' Fernandes said. 'But it was crystal clear we needed more competition for the players that were here, more quality to get everyone to step up a little more to get to the XI, and I think that is what the club are trying to do. 'Hopefully we can get one or two players more to help with that,' he added. Asked about Fernandes's comments, manager Ruben Amorim told reporters: 'I think I'm happy for the players to have that feeling. It's saying that they understand the situation. So, it's a good feeling. 'I think the momentum of the tour was perfect. We had the weeks to work with a good environment, good feeling, and then we go back to Carrington (training ground) and we are near to start the season. 'We are going with the feeling that we need to do a lot of things (better),' Amorim said. United begin the new Premier League season against Arsenal on Aug 17.
