Independence Day celebrated in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh
Flag unfurling ceremonies were held at district headquarters and other places, officials said.
Punjab Governor and Union Territory Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria hoisted the national flag at Chandigarh while Haryana Governor Ashim Kumar Ghosh hoisted the national flag in Ambala.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann hoisted the national flag at a state-level function in Faridkot and his Haryana counterpart Nayab Singh Saini unfurled the tricolour in Rohtak.
On this occasion, freedom fighters, who played a vital role in the struggle of Independence, were remembered on the occasion.
Students of different educational institutions presented physical exercise shows and vibrant cultural performances, showcasing rich culture and heritage.
In a state-level function in Faridkot, Punjab CM Mann inspected the parade and took a salute from the march past. On this occasion, Punjab Chief Secretary K A P Sinha and Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav were also present.
Delivering his address on the occasion of 79th Independence Day, Mann remembered the contribution of martyrs including freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Udham Singh, Sukhdev and Lala Lajpat Rai.
Speaking about his government's works, he said the 'Mukh Mantri Sehat Bima Yojna', which will start from October 2, will provide a health insurance cover of Rs 10 lakh to each family in the state.
He said all government hospitals and 552 private hospitals have been empaneled under this scheme.
The Punjab government will bear the medical expenditure cost for this, he added.
Mann further said his government so far opened 881 'aam aadmi clinics' where around 70,000 people come for treatment every day.
He said the number of 'aam aadmi clinics' will be increased to 1,000 soon.
On the education front, he said his government is opening 'Schools of Eminence' in the state.
He further said due to strenuous efforts of the AAP government, Punjab achieved the top position in the government of India's National Achievement Survey in education as against 29th spot in 2017.
On his government's ongoing anti-drug drive, Mann said the state government is taking strict action against drug smugglers, adding that people were giving immense support to the campaign 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' (war against drugs).
He further said village defence committees have been formed to prevent supplies of drugs.
Mann said his government has deployed an anti-drone system in border areas to prevent smuggling of drugs and weapons from Pakistan.
His government provided 55,000 government jobs on merit basis in the past three years, he said.
The CM further said at the time he assumed office, only 21 percent of canal water was being used for irrigation but now that has risen to 63 percent.
Due to the concerted efforts of the state government for the first time, canal and river waters have reached the tail ends of villages, he said.
Meanwhile, Haryana CM Nayab Saini also extended greetings on the country's 79th Independence Day.
In an event in Rohtak, Saini remembered freedom fighters for their role in the country's Independence.

KOLKATA: At least 39 school students fell ill due to intense heat and high humid weather conditions during the parade of the Independence Day programme organized by the West Bengal Government in Red Road, Kolkata on Friday. The students were taken to the emergency department of the SSKM Hospital nearby for treatment. According to hospital sources, 39 students have been brought for treatment and all of them are out of danger. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who was present in the Red Road programme, later visited the students in the hospital. 'They were given breakfast in the morning. Many of them have tension until the event. That is why they were hungry. Many had a tendency to dehydration. What happens... there is a psychological effect. When you see that one friend has fallen ill, another friend also falls ill. Now everyone is fine. I have given everyone water, snacks, sweets, and taken pictures with them," Mamata said A few days ago, during the rehearsal of this event, a few students fell ill. Some of them were taken to SSKM Hospital and the rest to the Calcutta Medical College for treatment.

39 children fall sick during Independence Day parade, Mamata meets them at hospital
During the Independence Day parade at Kolkata's Red Road, 39 schoolchildren fell sick and were shifted to the SSKM Hospital. Later, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the hospital and spoke to the children. After meeting the children she said, 'They are doing well now. I personally met and talked with them.' Police sources said after heavy rain, a sudden increase in the heat and temperature led to dehydration for both the participants and the police personnel. The students — who hailed from Malda, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and other districts — had participated in the parade. Banerjee added, 'I think they did not eat their tiffin. Nowadays, children maintain a diet, so they may have avoided eating the tiffin. Empty stomach may cause sickness (sometimes). In the case of children, it often happens that when one falls sick, those standing nearby feel they are not well. However, they are now all doing well.' Banerjee added that she has instructed doctors to take special care of the children. She also said that except for one child, the rest would be discharged from SSKM Hospital after primary care. According to a source in the hospital, the child who will remain admitted is very weak. On duty doctors said she may be released in a few days. A senior police officer said, 'Police personnel were given glucose but when the children fell ill, we did not take risk and rushed them to the hospital. They fell sick after the performance.' Director of SSKM Hospital Manimoy Banerjee later said, 'The sudden sickness happened due of dehydration. We gave necessary treatment. The Chief Minister gave them sweets and water. We observed them for an hour and then released them from the hospital one by one.' Kolkata police said they have made arrangements for all the children to reach home safely.

CM Sukhu launches Anti-Chitta Volunteer Scheme, forms Nasha Mukti Board, and announces Rs 3,000 crore disaster relief plan
CHANDIGARH: On the 79th Independence Day, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced a series of major initiatives, including the launch of the Anti-Chitta Volunteer Scheme, the formation of the Nasha Mukti Roktham and Punarvas Board, and a ₹3,000 crore disaster mitigation and livelihood project. Addressing the state-level function at Sarkaghat in Mandi district after unfurling the national flag, the Chief Minister expressed deep concern over the growing problem of chitta (heroin) addiction among youth. 'Our government is committed to protecting the younger generation from the scourge of drugs,' he said. He noted that under the PIT NDPS Act, property worth over ₹42 crore had been seized from drug mafias, and chitta testing has been made mandatory in police recruitment. Anti-Chitta Volunteer Scheme Sukhu announced the launch of the Anti-Chitta Volunteer Scheme, under which trained volunteers will act as a link between the public and police. These youth volunteers will aid in spreading awareness, gathering intelligence, and providing timely, confidential information to the authorities. 'Incentives will be provided for these volunteers,' he said, adding that the scheme aims to create a grassroots-level response to drug trafficking. Nasha Mukti Board for Prevention and Rehabilitation The Chief Minister also announced the formation of the Nasha Mukti Roktham and Punarvas Board. This board will include representatives from departments such as Home, Health, Education, Social Justice, Youth Services, Panchayati Raj, and Prisons, along with NGOs and social scientists. The board's goal is twofold: to prevent substance abuse and to rehabilitate and reintegrate addicted youth into society. An action plan for de-addiction and rehabilitation will be jointly prepared by NITI Aayog, AIIMS, PGI, and the State Health Department. To strengthen the fight at the local level, anti-drug committees will be established in villages and panchayats. These will include the panchayat secretary, ASHA worker, Anganwadi worker, and a designated police constable. The committees will receive and share information, and police officers will be held accountable for regular meetings and monthly reporting.
