PM Modi speaks to Putin as Trump ups tariff threat

Hans India16 hours ago
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin over phone during which the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to further deepen the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia.
Putin briefed Modi on his country's ongoing conflict with Ukraine, with the prime minister reiterating India's consistent position for its peaceful resolution.
The conversation between the two leaders came amid US President Donald Trump ratcheting up pressure on India over its purchase of Russian oil. Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order, slapping an additional 25 per cent tariff on India for the purchase of Russian oil, bringing the total duties to 50 per cent -- among the highest imposed by the US on any country in the world.
The additional 25 per cent duty will come into effect on August 27. In a post on X, Modi said, "Had a very good and detailed conversation with my friend President Putin. I thanked him for sharing the latest developments on Ukraine. "We also reviewed the progress in our bilateral agenda, and reaffirmed our commitment to further deepen the India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership.
I look forward to hosting President Putin in India later this year." It will be the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit.
The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement, "President Putin briefed the PM on the latest developments concerning Ukraine". "While thanking President Putin for his detailed assessment, the prime minister reiterated India's consistent position for peaceful resolution of the conflict," it said. The two leaders also reviewed progress in the bilateral agenda, and reaffirmed their commitment to further deepen the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. Prime Minister Modi invited President Putin to India later this year for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit, the MEA said.
According to sources, National Security Advisor (NSA)) Ajit Doval has said during his meetings in Moscow that dates for Putin's visit to India are being worked out.
In Russia, Doval held talks with Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu and other senior officials, which focused on bilateral energy and defence cooperation as well as Putin's visit to India.
Prime Minister Modi had travelled to Russia twice last year for an annual summit with Putin and to attend the BRICS Summit in Kazan.
Modi on Thursday also received a phone call from Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, whose country has also been at the receiving end of Trump's tariffs.
The two leaders agreed to enhance cooperation in trade, technology, energy, defence, agriculture, health, and people-to-people ties.

India's Envoy Vinay Kwatra Speaks To US Senator Lindsey Graham Over Energy Security

Last Updated: India's Ambassador Vinay Kwatra discussed energy security and trade with US Senator Lindsey Graham, who warned of tariffs on countries buying Russian oil, including India. India's Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra, held a conversation with South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham on Saturday and shared New Delhi's perspective on energy security and national interests. Kwatra also said that he held a discussion with Graham on increasing energy trade with Washington. 'Spoke to Senator @LindseyGrahamSC and shared with him the Indian perspective on our energy security, including increasing energy trade with the United States," the Indian envoy said in a post on X. Spoke to Senator @LindseyGrahamSC and shared with him the Indian perspective on our energy security including increasing energy trade with the United States.— Amb Vinay Mohan Kwatra (@AmbVMKwatra) August 9, 2025 It is noteworthy that Graham was one of the Senators who had issued warnings to countries doing business with Russia that US President Donald Trump would impose massive tariffs on their goods. In an interview with Fox News, the US senator had said, 'Trump is going to impose tariffs on people that buy Russian oil—China, India, and Brazil," arguing that the countries were helping fund the war in Ukraine as they accounted for around 80 per cent of Russia's crude exports. 'If you keep buying cheap Russian oil to allow this war to continue, we will tariff the hell out of you. And we're going to crush your economy, because what you are doing is blood money," he added. His warning had come weeks before Trump's 25% reciprocal tariff announcement for India. The US President intensified his tirade against New Delhi later, with an additional 25% tariff announcement for buying Russian oil. While the reciprocal tariffs have come into force, the additional duties will take effect starting August 27. Meanwhile, India has defended its energy strategy, saying that its crude oil purchases from Russia are 'a necessity compelled by global market conditions" and not a political endorsement of Moscow. It further asserted that the country will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security. 'India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security," the statement said, underlining the country's commitment to stable and affordable energy access for its citizens. The MEA termed the levies as 'unjustified and unreasonable" and called out the double standards of the United States and the European Union over their trade ties with Russia. The statement highlighted that the US continues to import uranium hexafluoride from Russia for its nuclear industry. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. India hails US-Russia talks on 15 August, says they hold ‘promise' of ending Ukraine war: ‘As PM Modi has…'

India on Friday hailed the upcoming meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska to discuss the Russia-Ukraine war, saying that it promises to end the conflict. In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said the Trump-Putin meet in Alaska on August 15 could bring prospects of peace. 'India welcomes the understanding reached between the United States and the Russian Federation for a meeting in Alaska on 15th August 2025. This meeting holds the promise of bringing to an end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and opening up the prospects for peace,' it said. The MEA further cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi's opinion on wars. "As Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said on several occasions, 'This is not an era of war'. India, therefore, endorses the upcoming Summit meeting and stands ready to support these efforts,' it said. US President Donald Trump on Saturday announced that he will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin next Friday, August 15, 2025, in Alaska. The meeting is expected to focus heavily on efforts to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine. 'The highly anticipated meeting between myself, as President of the United States of America, and President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, will take place next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska. Further details to follow. Thank you for your attention to this matter,' he said in a post on Truth Social. The talks between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin could be potentially beneficial of India, who faces a 50 per cent tariff on its exports to the US for buying Russian oil. 'I find that the Government of India is currently directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil,' Trump had said in an executive order on August 6. 'Accordingly, and as consistent with applicable law, articles of India imported into the customs territory of the United States shall be subject to an additional ad valorem rate of duty of 25 percent,' the executive order reads.
