Virgin Media is handing customers free iPads right now
The free iPad is included in Virgin Media's Mega Volt Package, a combined plan that offers broadband and TV services. This package provides high-speed internet, mobile data, and TV channels all in one, making it an ideal choice for busy households.
Priced at £88.99 per month, customers will also receive an iPad absolutely free.
Customers who commit to the monthly plan will receive a 64GB iPad 9th Gen model, typically priced at £200, completely free. This deal is not currently available anywhere else. The provider last offered this deal in March, as an improvement on its previous free bill credit deals, reports the Mirror.
Although this isn't Apple's latest device, it's a 2021 model. It features a 10.2-inch screen, a decent processor for speed, and is compatible with Apple's keyboard case and Apple Pencil.
At the same time, Amazon's newer 10th Gen iPad deal is worth a look at too. Alternatively there is Sky Mobile, which isn't offering any free device with its plans, but it's got the much newer 2024 iPad Pro 13-inch M4 on a cost splitting plan and it's now available for £34 a month.
Virgin's attractive deal offers a comprehensive bundle for consumers. Here's what the Mega Volt package includes:
Gigabit broadband: Virgin Media's fastest broadband, Gig1 Fibre, which provides customers with 1130Mbps average download speeds.
WiFi guarantee: Virgin Media's market-leading WiFi guarantee is included at no extra cost (usually £8 per month), offering customers minimum download speeds of 30Mbps in every room or £100 back.
TV: A huge variety of 240+ TV channels and subscription services, including Netflix standard with ads, Sky Sports HD and Sky Cinema HD at no extra cost.
Mobile: A 250GB O2 SIM which includes data roaming (up to 25GB) in 75 worldwide including USA, Australia and 49 EU destinations at no extra cost.
O2 Extra: Customers can choose a subscription service including Disney+, McAffee, Amazon Prime Video or Audible for six months at no extra cost.
The Mega Volt plan combines both into one neat package. It provides internet speeds of 1130Mbps (Gig1 fibre broadband), over 230 TV channels, and access to Sky Sports and Sky Cinema HD.
At £88.99 per month on an 18-month contract, it's not a small sum if you're only after a free iPad, so it might be worth shopping around. However, if you're in need of a new TV and broadband plan, the complimentary iPad is definitely a bonus.

Crippling cost of sending kids 'back to school' including uniform hits £845
The annual outlay for the start of the school term is a big drain on family finances - but include demands for the latest trainers, gadgets and even trendy haircuts The crippling cost of getting kids back to school ready is being made worse by pester power, research suggests. Many parents say they face demands from their kids to have the latest gadgets, trainers, and even skincare before the start of term. That is on top of the usual outlay for school uniforms, sports kit and the rest which can blow a hole in family budgets at this time of year. It comes after a summer which, for many, has left their household finances in a threadbare state. A new report from refurbished marketplace Back Market suggests parents are now being pestered by their kids to pay an average £845 on new gear for school. More than half of mums and dads questioned said a new school bag was a 'must have' - even if in reality the old one would have done. Around a third say they are pestered into buying the latest branded trainers, or a new lunchbox, and 28% say their kids expect to be able to go on an expensive school trip. Almost a quarter (23%) of parents have been told by their child they have a new laptop for school. And the same percentage say their kids are requesting a new iPhone or other smartphone for the start of the school term, often to keep up with their mates. Some of the pestering is being driven by social media and merchandise and products plugged online. It has seen Stanley Cups demanded by one in 10 modern kids, as well as skin care fads. But the result of all this expense comes at a big cost to parents' bank balances, with eight in 10 saying they will struggle to afford everything their child 'needs' for back to school. The survey also found that 36% felt that there is too much status associated with having the latest tech and gear, and a quarter say the costs are out of control. Three quarters insist they are told regularly by their kids that everyone else's parents have bought their children the latest gadgets. Luke Forshaw, head of brand and marketing at Back Market, said: 'The data shows just how much money parents are expected to fork out for their children's back-to-school items - with tech emerging as the biggest drain on parents' pockets. 'We understand that kids may be under pressure to go back to school with the iPhones, laptops and tablets, but there are ways to keep these costs down, receive quality devices, while also looking after the planet. 'That's why refurbished tech is the perfect solution: it offers parents affordable options and gives kids high-quality devices they can be proud of.' Back to school 'must haves' New school bag 53% (of parents will fork out for this) New uniform items 45% New PE kit 42% New hoodies / jumpers 35% New lunchbox 35% New branded trainers 32% An upcoming school trip 28% A new laptop 23% New iPhone or smartphone 23% A new tablet / iPad 20% New haircut 18% New headphones/airpods 14% Skincare, haircare and cosmetics 14% TikTok-famous food & drink items (bubble tea, Prime, Starbucks, etc.) – 9% New makeup – 8%

UK has backed down on demand to access US Apple user data, spy chief says
The UK government has dropped its insistence that Apple allows law enforcement officials 'backdoor' access to US customer data, Donald Trump's spy chief, Tulsi Gabbard, says. The US director of national intelligence posted the claim on X following a months-long dispute embroiling the iPhone manufacturer, the UK government and the US president. Trump had weighed in to accuse Britain of behaving like China, telling the prime minister, Keir Starmer: 'You can't do this'. Neither the Home Office nor Apple are commenting on the alleged agreement, which Gabbard said meant the UK was no longer demanding that Apple 'provide a 'backdoor' that would have enabled access to the protected encrypted data of American citizens and encroached on our civil liberties'. The transatlantic row began when the Home Office issued a 'technical capability notice' to Apple under the Investigatory Powers Act, which requires companies to assist law enforcement in providing evidence. Apple responded by launching a legal challenge, which the Home Office demanded be kept secret but judges ordered be made public. The US vice-president, JD Vance, also complained saying: 'I don't want American citizens to be spied on.' He said it was 'crazy' that 'we're creating a backdoor in our own technology networks that our enemies are now using'. Civil liberties groups cautioned that the backdoor would put politicians, campaigners and minority groups at particular risk of being targeted. In February, Apple responded by withdrawing the option for its new British customers to enable advance data protection options, saying it was 'deeply disappointed' and would never build a backdoor into any of its products. That meant, uniquely, many UK customers were unable to benefit from end-to-end encryption of services, including the iCloud Drive, photos, notes or reminders, making them more vulnerable to data breaches. Gabbard said: 'Over the past few months, I've been working closely with our partners in the UK, alongside President Trump and Vice-President Vance, to ensure Americans' private data remains private and our constitutional rights and civil liberties are protected.' It is not clear whether the technical capability notice requiring the data access would be withdrawn altogether or altered. It could in theory be limited to allowing access to the data only of UK citizens, although experts cautioned that could be technologically unrealistic. It also raises the danger that other foreign governments could still find a way to use the backdoor. Neither is it clear whether Apple will be able to offer new UK customers access to its highest levels of data protection again. The Home Office refused to confirm Gabbard's claim, saying: 'We do not comment on operational matters, including confirming or denying the existence of such notices. We have long had joint security and intelligence arrangements with the US to tackle the most serious threats, such as terrorism and child sexual abuse, including the role played by fast-moving technology in enabling those threats.' It added: 'Those arrangements have long contained safeguards to protect privacy and sovereignty: for example the data access agreement includes critical safeguards to prevent the UK and US from targeting the data of each other's citizens. We will continue to build on those arrangements and we will also continue to maintain a strong security framework to ensure that we can continue to pursue terrorists and serious criminals operating in the UK. We will always take all actions necessary at the domestic level to keep UK citizens safe.' The UK-US data access agreement allows UK agencies to submit requests for content of communications directly to communications service providers, including social media platforms and messaging services, in the US, but this must be for the purpose of investigating, preventing, detecting, and prosecuting serious crime, officials said. Apple was approached for comment.
