Former Broncos Star Predicted to Sign With AFC West Rival
Former Broncos Star Predicted to Sign With AFC West Rival originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Denver Broncos have had some of the most star-studded secondaries over the years. Recent memory brings up names like Champ Bailey, Aqib Talib, Chris Harris Jr., and now Pat Surtain II. You can add Justin Simmons, the former four-time All-Pro, to that list.

Simmons, who signed with the Atlanta Falcons in 2024, is now 31 years old and a free agent. According to Cody Benjamin at CBS Sports, Simmons could be headed to one of the Broncos' division rivals.
"Linked to big-name cover men... the [Las Vegas] Raiders could just as easily use a savvy starter on the back end under the defensively minded Pete Carroll," Benjamin said.
If Simmons were to sign with the Raiders, or either of the Broncos' other two AFC West rivals, it would set up two potential revenge games for the safety who was cut by Denver last offseason.

Outside of a need for secondary help, there are two big reasons why Benjamin named the Raiders as one of Simmons' top possible landing spots: money and a familiar face.

"Besides possessing plenty of 2025 salary cap space to add help, the Raiders also employ pass game coordinator Joe Woods, who served as Simmons' first defensive backs coach in Denver," Benjamin said.
Simmons led the league in 2022 in interceptions, and is too experienced and too talented not to sign with a team this offseason. Although his production has slowed down with age, he offers starting-caliber play and at the very least quality depth.
It may take until training camp or preseason, where teams really begin to find out their needs, for Simmons to sign with a new team. Injuries could also play a role in when and where the free agent goes.

Broncos player issues defiant message with Ben Hunt's return set to see him axed
Broncos star Billy Walters has claimed he will fight for his bench position at the club after Michael Maguire is expected to throw Ben Hunt straight into the No.9 role when he returns from injury. Fans were left deflated on Tuesday when it emerged Hunt would not be fit in time for the game against the Warriors on the weekend. Hunt has been out since injuring himself against the Rabbitohs in round 10 after a MCL injury. While he was expected to play this weekend at Suncorp, Maguire has been forced to sit him out for another round after failing to recover in time. This means Cory Paix will start at dummy-half, while Walters will come off the bench. Paix and Walters have switched roles a number of times throughout the season as Maguire has looked to find the right balance for his team. Paix appears to have won back the starting role, which leaves Walters in a precarious situation. Walters appears to have one more chance to prove himself this weekend, before Hunt is fit. And the Broncos utility admitted he isn't ready to let go of his jersey. "I feel like everyone's position's up for grabs," Walters said. "You have got to be playing good footy or you're not going to be in the team. So I don't know which way Madge (coach Michael Magure) is going to go. "It's kind of been up to me and Paixy to see who's playing the best or see who can bring the most to the team, so, I suppose we'll see in the next coming weeks. "I keep asking Dozer (Hunt) when he's going to be back, hoping he can push it back a little bit further just to make sure I'm in the team, but even if I'm not in the team I'll still be trying hard to get back in. You never know with rugby league these days, it could change pretty quickly, so you've always got to be ready and just take the opportunity when it's there." The Broncos have struggled at times this year with Hunt slotting into No.6 while Ezra Mam was serving his suspension. While the likes of Cooper Cronk thought the Broncos were better off with Hunt at five-eighth alongside Adam Reynolds, the form of Reece Walsh dropped as he struggled to link-up with the new spine. Mam's return appears to have helped Walsh play with more freedom and Hunt will revert to the No.9 role he was initially brought into play. While Hunt has played No.7 for most of his NRL career, he shifted to No.9 for Queensland in State of Origin. Slater has opted to use Hunt to start game in previous Origin series, working in tandem with Harry Grant in a dual-hooker role for Queensland. In fact, the Maroons' Game 2 vicory in Perth was the first time in five games that they'd won with the Storm superstar starting at hooker Hunt has excelled in this role having played it for both the Maroons and Australia. The switch would give Brisbane another creative outlet in attack and much needed big-game experience. RELATED: Blow for Storm and Queensland as star ruled out of Origin 3 Corey Parker calls for premiership-winning coach to stand down now While Walters is fighting for his position in the Broncos 17, the utility admitted he is just ready to take advantage of his opportunity. "You can't think too far ahead anyway. You have got to enjoy every moment that you pull on the Broncos jersey and be grateful for every chance that you get and go out there and play your best footy," he added. I just know if I'm playing my best football, then I'll be in the team somewhere."

Longhorns dynamic defensive duo named one of college football's best
Anthony Hill and Colin Simmons recognized for their stellar play During the 2025 campaign, the Texas Longhorns defense made life difficult for offensive coordinators. While they had a roster full of talent, two players who emerged as stars were Anthony Hill Jr. and Colin Simmons. The duo has only played one season together and has shown enough to earn a spot among the best in the country. In an article from CBS Sports, Hill and Simmons were named college football's No. 2 "dynamic duo" for the upcoming season. For many who watched the Longhorns closely last year, that comes as no surprise. "No tandem is as fearsome in the pass rush as Anthony Hill Jr. and Colin Simmons, both of whom hauled in All-American honors last season as disruptors on the Texas defensive front," Carter Bahns wrote. "Hill is back as college football's most heralded linebacker, fresh off a campaign in which he led the SEC in tackles for loss (17) and forced fumbles (four), and Simmons returns as one of the nation's top young defenders after a nine-sack true freshman campaign." While the expectations will be higher for Hill and Simmons, they showed last year they are elite. Simmons recorded 48 total tackles in his freshman season and was a force regardless of the opponent. That was an encouraging sign in one of the best conferences in the nation. He also got some help from Hill, who took his game to another level. The. Denton native set career highs in total tackles with 113, sacks with eight, and forced fumbles with four. Due to his play, the talented linebacker earned second-team All-American honors. Together, the Longhorns defenders combined for 17 sacks and 161 total tackles. Texas will be a hard team to beat if they can replicate those numbers this upcoming season. The bar is set high for the 2026 campaign, but with Hill and Simmons anchoring the defense, they should again be one of the nation's best. For a team with national title hopes, that is not a bad position to be in.

Pete Carroll Names Biggest Reason Why He Came Out of Retirement to Join Raiders
Pete Carroll Names Biggest Reason Why He Came Out of Retirement to Join Raiders originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis fired head coach Antonio Pierce at the beginning of the 2025 NFL offseason after a four-win season in 2024. In a corresponding move, he hired Super Bowl-winning head coach Pete Carroll to replace him. Advertisement Carroll made previous stops with the New York Jets, New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks. After 18 years as a head coach in the NFL, however, he spent the 2024 football season on the sidelines, not coaching. However, he made his return with the Raiders and has spoken at length during the team's offseason program about how rejuvenated he is to be back. The 73-year-old is already making the most of what seems to be his final NFL head coaching gig. Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis and minority owner Tom Ward-Imagn Images On Thursday, Carroll broke his silence about why he decided to come out of retirement and join the Raiders. He revealed this information on an episode of the Get Got Pod with Marshawn Lynch and Mike Robinson. Advertisement "There was a little bit of interest you know, college too. There was some stuff going on back and forth. And the more I got around it, the more I felt the passion growing. The way I would say it, I was in the pursuit of my passion," Carroll said. "It has never been anything but fun. Fortunately, it worked out. You know, a couple of crazy things happened right around the end of it. But the Raiders thing when Tom [Brady] joined up, that really made a difference to me. That shifted my gears a little bit." Brady entered the fold for the Raiders last fall when he bought a minority stake in the team. In his first offseason with the franchise, he has already laid a major claim in the team's personnel decisions. He was integral in the hiring of Carroll, and signed off on the acquisitions of quarterbacks Geno Smith via trade and Cam Miller in the 2025 NFL Draft. Carroll spent many years as the head coach of the Seahawks competing against Brady on both the Patriots and Buccaneers. During that time, Carroll clearly established a deep respect for Brady, as he was admittedly a key cog in getting Carroll to Las Vegas.
