No cars available for full Electric Car Grant nearly a month after launch
'Band 1' cars get the full £3,750 relief and 'Band 2' models receive a reduced £1,500 rate.
As of today (Aug 14), only 17 cars are available for Electric Car Grants and all of them are in Band 2. The new Nissan Leaf will be eligible for the full £3,750 grant, but it is not yet on sale.
Car dealers say this is stalling sales of EVs in showrooms as customers hold off purchases to see if their model will be offered a discount.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said new car sales in July were down five per cent and blamed 'external factors'. Chief Mike Hawes called for 'consumer certainty' around the grant.
Neil McCue, director of the large South Coast-based franchised car dealer group Snows, branded the grant 'ill thought out'.
He said: 'We have seen customers holding off buying electric cars in July and we're seeing it again in August. They're all asking for their £3,750 discount and we can't give it to them.
'Why has this been so complicated? It shouldn't have been linked to emissions for manufacturing – the idea here was to boost the sales of EVs and you can only do that with a simple scheme that covers them all.'
Peter Smyth, director of car dealer group Swansway, called the scheme 'shambolic' and said it was causing 'too much confusion' in showrooms.
He added: 'There should have been a simple VAT cut on all electric cars under £37,000 which would have been simple to implement and importantly available from the day of launch.'
The Electric Car Grant discounts are linked to the eco credentials of the manufacturing process with 'Science-Based Targets' used to decide which band the cars sit in. These look at the emissions emitted by car makers when producing the batteries and the vehicles.
James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine, said: 'We are hearing from dealers across the country that this scheme is having the opposite effect of what the government intended. The delay in announcing eligible cars is causing electric car sales to stall.
'While we applaud the government for finally doing something to incentivise electric car sales, the details of this scheme really should have been hammered out behind closed doors before it was announced to avoid the confusion we're now facing.'
A Department for Transport spokesperson said: 'We expect dozens of models to be eligible for the Electric Car Grant with 17 models announced to date and many more to come, providing a substantial boost for the industry and saving drivers thousands of pounds.
'The list of eligible models is published online and regularly updated with discounts available for the public at dealerships.
'We have also published comprehensive guidance for manufacturers who we will continue to work with alongside dealers to help more of their customers access the grant.'

Riccardough's Pizza Kitchen to bring a slice of Italian heritage back to Oban
Oban is set to welcome Riccardough's, a new food business with a whole lot of history behind it. And one that promises to serve up a taste of authentic Italian pizza, many locals will remember fondly. Riccardough's Pizza Kitchen, a newly refurbished and eye-catching mobile pizza van, will soon be hitting the streets of Oban and surrounding villages. Behind the venture is 61-year-old Riccardo Pacitti, the son of the late Luigi and Dorina Pacitti, who ran the much-loved Luigi's Pizzeria and chip shop in the town for many years. Luigi's chip shop in Oban was a local institution. Known for its authentic Italian pizza and classic fish and chips, it became a community favourite. For years, locals and visitors alike queued for its fresh flavours and the warm, family-run atmosphere that made it a much-missed part of the town's food scene. The Pacitti family were pioneers of authentic Italian pizza in Oban, introducing freshly made bases and traditional toppings to customers long before the trend took off in Scotland. 'I was working in the chip shop at the time and people just loved it,' said Riccardo. 'We were the first in Oban to serve real, fresh Italian pizza. It's something I've always been proud of.' After leaving the family business, Riccardo spent 22 years working at sea. He returned home to Oban in 2020 due to health reasons and the impact of the Covid pandemic. Since then, he has been looking for a way back into the food trade — but finding a restaurant premises proved difficult. 'I was never thinking about a van,' he said. 'But my daughter Natalie and her partner David encouraged me to give it a go.' Natalie runs a successful beauty business Oro Rosa, in the shop premises her grandparents once owned, and David MacPhee runs a digital marketing company, Digital Minded, and the This is Oban website. 'They've really helped me get this off the ground,' Riccardo said. The result is Riccardough's Pizza Kitchen — a fully renovated pizza van that has been in the works since March and has just received a striking new wrap from Impact Branding. Riccardo grew up steeped in Italian cooking, learning recipes and techniques from his parents. He says Riccardough's will allow him to share that heritage with a new generation of customers. Riccardough's Pizza Kitchen will serve at lunchtimes in Oban town centre near Tesco, before moving on to villages such as Connel, Dunbeg and others in the evenings. The van will also be available for parties, weddings and events, with Riccardo working on a set schedule so people know when and where to find it. As for the menu, Riccardo is keeping his cards close to his chest. 'I'm keeping the recipe and flavours under my chef's hat for now,' he said. 'But let's just say they'll be familiar to anyone who remembers Luigi's Pizzeria.' With the final touches being put in place, Riccardough's Pizza Kitchen is expected to open very soon. High-speed broadband collaboration for Scottish homes and businesses
Emtelle, which is based in Hawick with manufacturing sites in Scotland, Germany, Denmark, Abu Dhabi and the US, said the collaboration will see it supply duct, sub-duct and fibre infrastructure for new full-fibre networks to enable 'fibre to the premises' speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second. The infrastructure is being supplied to GoFibre as part of the Edinburgh-based company's fourth contract under the £5 billion Project Gigabit. This contract is worth £105m, and will see GoFibre deliver high-speed broadband connections and download speeds to around 63,000 residents and businesses, in parts of the city of Aberdeen and elsewhere in Aberdeenshire, as well as in Angus, Dundee, the Highlands, Moray, and Perth and Kinross, Emtelle noted. The first connections are due to be delivered by summer 2026. The Scottish Government has noted it plays "a key role in delivering Project Gigabit procurements in Scotland, working closely with the UK Government to deploy funding committed to connect some of the hardest to reach geographies across the UK". Read more Emtelle, which describes itself as a 'global leader' in the supply of passive network infrastructure for high-speed connectivity, has partnered with GoFibre on its commercial network build, and to deliver previous contracts under Project Gigabit. GoFibre's network now extends to more than 120,000 premises, and covers in excess of 30 'hard-to-reach' areas in Scotland and the north of England. Emtelle and GoFibre, which was founded in the Scottish Borders town of Duns, joined forces to enhance digital connectivity for 8,000 residents and businesses in Hawick. The Hawick-based company noted it had played a key role by manufacturing and supplying the duct, sub-duct, and fibre needed to deliver full-fibre connectivity to the Scottish Borders town, supporting GoFibre's regional rollout. Gavin Faulds, chief commercial officer of Emtelle, said: 'We are delighted to be strengthening our partnership with GoFibre in order to bring full-fibre connectivity to more than 60,000 premises in the north-east of Scotland. 'As a major Scottish employer, we firmly believe Scotland needs a first-class digital network across every town and village in order to reduce the digital divide and boost economic growth. That is why we are committed to improving its networks, especially for those in rural regions who are the hardest to reach.' He added: 'In the long term, we aim to continue our partnership with GoFibre, and build the infrastructure that further transforms connectivity in both Scotland and the UK.' GoFibre chief executive Neil Conaghan said: 'Our strategic partnership with Emtelle is an important enabler for GoFibre to deliver our Project Gigabit contract in the north-east of Scotland. GoFibre and Emtelle are both Borders-born, and for two Scottish businesses to play such a crucial role in delivering gigabit connectivity for the country shows the strength of local supply chain. We're glad to have Emtelle as our strategic infrastructure partner.'

What cars qualify for the electric car grant? Full list with our best (and worst) picks
It's been just over a month since the UK Government announced the launch of a new Electric Car Grant (ECG) that aims to make EVs more affordable for more people by removing up to £3,750 off the price of select zero-emissions cars. However, as you probably know (and may have guessed) not every electric car on sale is eligible for a Government-funded price cut. We're not just talking about incredibly opulent EVs such as the Rolls-Royce Spectre or Lotus Evija. There are complex criteria that car manufacturers and their models have to meet in order to receive the ECG. Firstly, only cars starting from less than £37,000 are eligible to receive the Government's subsidy. Then there are two distinct bands. Band 1 is for the most sustainably produced EVs, and they qualify for the full £3,750 discount. Those considered to meet a lesser standard fall into Band 2 and receive £1,500 off. Advertisement - Article continues below At the time of writing, no cars receive the full £3,750 grant. But there is now a rather diverse selection of more than 20 EVs that get the £1,500 discount. If any of the cars on the list take your fancy and you feel like now is the right time to go electric, we can help. Our electric car deals page has all the top offers, and our parent site Carwow is running a live hub page for the latest EV discounts. You can also spec your perfect new electric car through our fantastic Buy a Car service . Alpine will be known to most people as either a sports car maker or Formula One team. But earlier this year, the performance brand launched its first-ever EV: a meaner version of the new Renault 5 called the Alpine A290, and the exciting electric hot hatch is officially eligible for the Electric Car Grant. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below Alpine A290 – best EV grant car for keen drivers - prices now start from £32,000 The first six electric cars eligible for the Government's new grant were all Citroens, including the Auto Express 2024 Car of the Year, the Citroen e-C3. Its more practical sibling, the Citroen e-C3 Aircross, and the all-new Citroen e-C5 Aircross family SUV are also eligible. Advertisement - Article continues below The Cupra Born is among the latest batch of cars that the Government has confirmed is eligible for its new grant. The sporty electric hatchback offers up to 346 miles of range, punchy performance and a roomy yet sporty-feeling cabin. Cupra Born - prices now start from £34,190 Nissan is confident that the all-new, third-generation Leaf coming soon will be eligible for the full £3,750 grant. In the meantime, the new Micra supermini (which is based on the Renault 5) has received the £1,500 grant. Meanwhile, the Nissan Ariya family SUV is now up to £9,000 cheaper than before thanks to the ECG and Nissan itself cutting the price. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below At the time of writing, Peugeot has confirmed three of its electric models are eligible for the Government grant: the E-208 supermini, E-2008 small SUV and E-Rifter MPV. However the stylish French car maker has more EVs in its line-up which might receive the grant later. Advertisement - Article continues below Renault's entire line-up of electric cars is now officially eligible for the Electric Car Grant, including two recent Auto Express New Car Award winners: the new Renault 5 supermini, which is our Affordable Electric Car of the Year for 2025, plus the reborn Renault 4 that won the hotly contested Small SUV of the Year award. Renault 4 - prices now start from £25,495 Renault 5 - Best value EV grant car - prices now start from £21,495 - prices now start from £21,495 Renault Megane - prices now start from £30,995 Renault Scenic - Best EV grant car for families - prices now start from £35,495 Vauxhall also has six electric cars in its line-up all eligible for the EV grant, from the Corsa Electric supermini to the very big, very practical Grandland Electric. Thanks to the grant, the new Vauxhall Frontera Electric is actually now more affordable than the petrol-powered versions of the small SUV, as prices start from just £22,495. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below Like Peugeot, Volkswagen has several electric cars in its line-up, but so far only has one model that's officially eligible for the Government grant. The VW ID.3 is the Cupra Born's less athletic cousin. It's incredibly refined on the motorway and it delivers up to 352 miles of range, so is a good choice for people who cover a lot of miles. Advertisement - Article continues below Volkswagen ID.3 - prices now start from £29,360 We expect many more models will be getting a price cut over the coming weeks and months, but these are our picks for the best cars that come with the EV grant right now. Leading the pack has to be the Renault 5. For a small electric car, it feels very sophisticated and well-rounded, thanks to its impressive handling abilities, refinement and Google-powered technology. The retro looks and charm sprinkled throughout are the cherry on top. What more could you want? Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below If your answer to that question was space, there's the slightly larger and boxier Renault 4, our Small SUV of the Year. As well as a bigger boot and more rear-seat space, the R4 also offers one-pedal driving – something its sibling doesn't right now – which is great for driving around town. Another Auto Express award winner, the Citroen e-C3, focuses on comfort, efficiency, affordability and just being a very easy car to live with. Alternatively, if you want something more practical, there's the Citroen e-C3 Aircross which is available for just £1,000 extra, has a bigger boot and offers beefier SUV design. For family buyers, our recommendations are the Renault Scenic and Nissan Ariya, which are actually based on the same platform but have very different styles and technology onboard. Both provide plenty of space and range though. While there are lots of excellent, hugely capable electric cars available with the EV grant, we'd recommend buyers avoid the Peugeot E-208 and E-2008, as well as the Vauxhall Mokka. All three are certainly stylish EVs, but they're all several years old at this point, yet considerably more expensive than their rivals. For instance, the entry-level E-208 costs about the same as the top-of-the-range version of the Renault 5, yet offers less range and features rather dated technology. The Vauxhall Mokka and Peugeot E-2008 seem even more overpriced when you consider they start from £31k and £33k respectively, after the EV grant has been applied. That's about the same price as the Citroen e-C5 Aircross – a much newer, full-size family SUV with more range – and several thousand pounds more than their key rival, the Renault 4.
