Ajman University Hosts Inaugural Family Society Conference to Address Digital Transformation and its Impact on Families
Under the esteemed patronage of His Highness Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ajman, Ajman University (AU) hosted the second edition of the Family and Society Conference , a landmark gathering that reinforced the University's pivotal role in shaping scholarly discourse around sustainability, family resilience, and societal development.
Held in the presence of His Excellency Sheikh Salem bin Sultan Al Qassimi, the conference convened Cabinet Members, deans, leading academics, and distinguished guests. Organized by the Humanities and Social Sciences Research Centre and the College of Humanities and Sciences at Ajman University, and in collaboration with the Emirates Association for Social Development in Ras Al Khaimah, Paris Cité University, and the Tarahum Charity Foundation, the conference carried the theme 'Families Shaping a Sustainable Future,' reflecting Ajman University's enduring commitment to advancing knowledge that drives societal transformation.
The conference featured an extraordinary roster of keynote speakers, reinforcing the University's reputation as a hub for intellectual leadership and international collaboration. Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Dr. Ouidad Bouchamaoui, Professor of Diplomatic Sciences at NYU Abu Dhabi, delivered a profound address on reimagining sustainability through the family unit. Professor Dennis Beach of the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, offered critical insights into educational research and community empowerment. Professor Peta White from Deakin University, Australia, and Editor-in-Chief of the Conference Special Issue, spoke on climate change education and the imperative of fostering intergenerational solidarity. Professor Hilary Bradbury, a leading global authority on action research for sustainability, contributed a compelling keynote address, challenging institutions and individuals alike to act as catalysts for sustainable change.

AU Commission's Celebration of Africa Day Highlights 2025 theme of Demanding Justice, Reparations
Nada Mustafa The African Union (AU) Commission held a high-level official celebration at its headquarters in Addis Ababa to mark Africa Day 2025. The ceremony featured video addresses from the President of Angola, João Lourenço, as Chairperson of the African Union; the President of Ghana, John Mahama, as the African Union Champion for Advancing Justice and Reparations for Africans; the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Yusuf; and the Ethiopian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Hadera Abera, representing the host country. In his video address as Chair of the African Union, the President of Angola pointed out that the occasion is not only a call to remember, but also a call to galvanize will, complementing the founding fathers' calls for liberation and decolonization. He added that Africa must strengthen its efforts to peacefully resolve regional conflicts and promote democratic governance to address the numerous challenges it faces in the areas of peace and security, youth unemployment, weak infrastructure, particularly in transportation and communications, and the lack of diversification of national economies. He emphasized that despite these challenges, the continent's will and improved governance enable it to capitalize not only on its natural resources, but also on its human capital, particularly its youth, who have the potential to transform digital technology, renewable energy, and integrated industries. He called for a conference for the Continental Free Trade Area on infrastructure and development policy enhancement this year, reaffirming the continent's focus on the future and commitment to a free and united Africa that overcomes the injustices of the past. In his video address as the African Union's champion for justice and reparations for Africans, the President of Ghana emphasized that the African Union's theme for the year aims to rectify the injustices inflicted on the continent. He explained that justice has many aspects, including offering clear apologies from the countries that committed these injustices, resolving the debt problems facing African countries, abandoning unfair trade practices, enabling the continent to achieve sustainable development, returning stolen cultural property, and developing educational curricula by teaching African history. He emphasized that the African Union is committed to defending these rights through solidarity among its member states with the aim of building a continent characterized by equality and obtaining due reparations. For his part, the Chairperson of the African Commission noted that remembrance is sometimes bitter, but it is also filled with hope for rectifying injustices. He indicated that the 2025 theme for the African Union is a mandate from the heads of state to achieve justice for the millions of Africans who suffered in the trans-atlantic enslavement. He emphasized that, despite this, Africa does not merely look to the past, but is determined to move forward into the future, leveraging its unique resources and advantages in all areas to fulfill the aspirations of its people, especially women and youth. He emphasized that the continent has to occupy its lawful place in international decision-making mechanisms, highlighting that the African Union's membership in the G20 is evidence of its global standing. He emphasized the responsibility of Africans to protect the continent's resources for the future through its unity as established by the founding fathers as a principle and strategic direction. Ambassador Amr Aljowaily, Director of the Directorate for Citizens' Organizations and African Diaspora at the African Union Commission, explained that the Directorate is tasked with coordinating the system-wide efforts and activities of the Union, across its various organs and units, around this year's theme of "Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations." He added that this includes working within the framework of the United Nations, particularly through the implementation of the "Second Decade for People of African Descent," in addition to cooperation with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), along with strengthening ties with African diaspora communities across various continents, including the Caribbean, the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Egypt's Foreign Minister stresses peace, security, economic ties at EU-AU Meeting
Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty stressed the importance of peace, security, and economic ties at the European Union-African Union (EU-AU) Ministerial Meeting in Brussels on Wednesday, 21 May. He affirmed Egypt's commitment to bolstering the strategic partnership between the two blocs and held separate bilateral meetings on the sidelines with his Rwandan counterpart and the Secretary-General of COMESA. During the EU-AU Meeting's plenary session on 'Peace, Security, and Governance,' Minister Abdelatty delivered Egypt's statement. He highlighted that the gathering occurred amidst unprecedented regional and international challenges, underscoring that these circumstances necessitate a deeper EU-AU partnership to end conflicts, combat terrorism, address forced migration, and protect maritime security. Abdelatty welcomed the EU's consistent support for African frameworks confronting continental threats. The Minister reiterated Egypt's belief in a comprehensive approach to sustainable peace by strengthening the nation-state and its institutions. He emphasised that building state capacities requires joint efforts to achieve lasting peace and called for supporting AU and African regional economic communities in early warning, conflict prevention, and mediation. In this context, Abdelatty reviewed Egypt's role as the AU Champion for Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development (PCRD). He detailed Egypt's collaboration with the AU Commission on updating PCRD policies, including the launch of the Cairo-based AU Centre for Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development (AUCPCRD), and urged EU support for the AU Commission in this area. Furthermore, the Foreign Minister underscored the importance of supporting Somalia's pursuit of stability and prosperity. He stressed the critical need to fund the AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to achieve its objectives, adding that a successful African-European partnership in Somalia would model future cooperation. On the sidelines, Abdelatty met Olivier Nduhungirehe, Rwandan Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Minister Abdelatty affirmed Egypt's commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, highlighting cooperation in energy, infrastructure, logistics, trade, investment, health, agriculture, and security. He welcomed the finalised land allocation for two logistic zones, one in each country, to enhance Egyptian companies' access to the Rwandan market, and noted progress on the Egypt-Rwanda/Magdi Yacoub Heart Centre. Also on Wednesday, Abdelatty met Chileshe Kapwepwe, Secretary-General of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). He praised Kapwepwe's efforts during Egypt's recent COMESA chairmanship for deepening economic integration. Abdelatty highlighted aspirations for cooperation in health, pharmaceuticals, tourism, and infrastructure to facilitate trade. He stressed Egypt's readiness to share expertise in specialised economic zones, the green economy, and solar energy, emphasising COMESA members' role in supporting the Secretariat to maximise economic integration benefits for overcoming regional economic challenges.
