Families of 3407 express concerns about FAA administrator nomination
The Trump administration is nominating Bryan Bedford, CEO of Republic Airways, to lead the FAA. Families worry his oversight could threaten more than a decade of sacrifice.
Marylin Kausner lost her 24-year-old daughter Ellyce in 2009 when Continental Colgan Air Flight 3407 crashed in Clarence Center, killing 49 people on board and one on the ground. The crash was determined to be caused by pilot error.
Since the crash, families have worked tirelessly to make the skies safer. Working with lawmakers, they helped pass stricter FAA regulations focusing on pilot training and fatigue. This includes requiring pilots to have at least 1,500 hours in the cockpit.
Kausner told News 4 that a big concern she has with Bedford is that he will put company policy over public safety.
'As the FAA administrator, he has the one position in the U.S. that will have the authority to roll back those hours,' Kausner said. 'So all that we have done, everything we have fought for is at risk with this nomination.'
In a statement, the families said that Bedford sought an exemption that would have allowed pilots with Republic to receive their Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate with only 750 hours of flight experience.
'Our families fought to establish the 1,500-hour rule because we saw firsthand the devastating consequences of inadequate training in the cockpit,' said Scott Maurer, who lost his 30-year-old daughter Lorin in the crash of Flight 3407. 'It is deeply troubling that Mr. Bedford attempted to create a backdoor around these proven safety standards for his own airline.'
'The aviation industry has experienced a troubling series of incidents in recent months, and this is not the time to introduce new risks into a system that has worked remarkably well,' said Karen Eckert, whose sister and 9/11 activist Beverly Eckert died in the crash. 'If anything, these events are a reminder that we need to strengthen—not relax—the safety standards currently in place. We hope that, if confirmed, Mr. Bedford will put safety above convenience or cost and commit to preserving the hard-won reforms that have protected millions of passengers since 2010.'
'The lessons of Flight 3407 were learned through unimaginable loss, and we refuse to let them be forgotten,' Maurer added. 'We expect Mr. Bedford, if approved, to put safety first, and we will hold him accountable to that standard.'
Congressman Nick Langworthy (NY-23) released a statement regarding the importance of the 1,500-hour in-flight pilot training requirement.
'If confirmed, I strongly urge Mr. Bedford to enforce the law as written,' the statement read. 'We must ensure that our progress never comes at the cost of passenger safety, and I will fight every day to make sure we do.'

Duffy: No plans to privatize air traffic controllers
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy on Wednesday said he is not looking to privatize the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) or its air traffic controllers, an idea floated by President Trump during his first term. 'I could spend my time the next three and a half years fighting over privatization. I'm not gonna do that,' Duffy said during a Wednesday appearance on NewsNation's 'On Balance.' 'What I'm gonna do is put every resource into training up more air traffic controllers to get them certified in their airspace in which they're gonna work, but also getting those experienced controllers to stay on the job, paying them a little more to not retire and continue to work for us,' he added. Duffy noted that lawmakers previously looked into privatizing the agency in 2018, after Trump the previous year announced a plan to privatize the U.S. air traffic control system, which he called 'stuck, painfully, in the past.' 'Today we're proposing to take American air travel into the future, finally,' Trump said in June 2017. But the effort never took off. Conversations about the country's air traffic control system quickly reignited during Trump's second term, due to a January mid-air collision with an American Airlines flight and an Army Blackhawk helicopter over D.C. resulting in more than 60 deaths. Since then, near-miss accidents have occurred at airports across the country. Some officials have blamed the issue on understaffing, as air traffic controller numbers remain at an all-time low for the FAA. Duffy has made recruiting a priority, along with efforts to increase investment in modern technology. 'We want the best and the brightest to be our air traffic controllers,' he told host Leland Vittert. Trump and Duffy have both blamed the January crash in part on hiring practices under former President Biden. Duffy blamed the Biden administration for allegedly allowing air traffic controllers to be approved for work at a 'lowered' standard. 'What we've done is said, listen, if you're 90-100 percent, you're best qualified. If you're 80-89 percent, you are well qualified…,' Duffy is referring to new qualification measurements. 'We have a 35 percent washout rate at the academy. So I'm in the business of getting the best minds, the best people, the best scores in the academy first.' Canada is among multiple countries that have privatized their air traffic control system. Other countries with at least partially privatized systems include the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Germany, according to NPR.

$25 million taxpayer cash handed by DHS, FEMA to groups with extremist ties: report
Taxpayer funds totalling $25 million were handed to US groups with alleged links to terror organizations or extremist ideology, a bombshell new study has found. In a twist of irony, the funds were originally allocated to help deradicalize would-be terrorists, but may have ended up in the pockets of groups that support Hamas, Hezbollah and the Iranian regime, according to the report. The Department of Homeland Security gave out the cash through its disaster relief programs, including the embattled Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), between 2013 and 2024, according to the report released by the Middle East Forum, a think tank based in Philadelphia. 5 The Department of Homeland Security granted more than $25 million to extremist groups in the US, including nonprofits that support Hamas, a new study says. AP 'We've seen the left allocate billions of dollars towards the latest woke pet projects, but the Middle East Forum's study of DHS spending uncovered something far more sinister,' said Ben Baird, a project director at the Middle East Forum and co-author of the study. 'Instead of protecting the homeland, the federal government is bankrolling extremists who idolize 9/11 hijackers and sympathize with the perpetrators of the October 7 massacre in Israel. 'Taxpayer dollars meant to strengthen American security were used to undermine public safety.' The group says it is now working with DHS to 'rescind grants to extremist groups' and work on making the granting process more transparent. Under President Biden, DHS established the Faith-Based Security Advisory Council (FBSAC) that works with the secretary of DHS to help with the security and emergency preparedness of religious institutions. 'The FBSAC provides advice and recommendations to the Secretary and other senior leadership on matters related to protecting houses of worship, preparedness and enhanced coordination with the faith community,' according to a description of the council on FEMA's website. 5 The Biden administration appointed CAIR founder Nihad Awad to a FEMA agency to consult on which religious groups should get funds for security and emergency preparedness. AFP/Getty Images Among the leaders appointed as consultants to the group was Mohamed Magid — director and imam of a controversial Virginia mosque complex that was raided in a federal counterterrorism investigation in 2002, although no charges were brought. Salaam al-Marayati, founder of the Muslim Public Affairs Council, who once blamed 9/11 on Israel, was also a consultant to the group. Al-Marayati later said that his comments were taken out of context but he did not apologize for them, according to the Los Angeles Times. Neither Magid nor Al-Marayati returned a request for comment this week. Some of the groups DHS allocated money to have ties to extremists. Ones named in the report include: The Council on American Islamic Relations, which has links to extremist groups, including Hamas, received nearly $250,000 in DHS security grants to its national office in Washington as well as chapters in Miami and Los Angeles, the report says. 5 The Islamic Circle of North America has alleged links to Jamaat-e-Islam, which has been associated with terrorist attacks in Bangladesh. ICNA has denied that it works with the group. FEMA Federal prosecutors named CAIR as an unindicted co-conspirator in the 2008 Holy Land Foundation trial, the largest terrorism funding case in US history. Ghassan Elashi, one of the leaders of HLF was also a founder of CAIR Texas. He was convicted and sentenced to 65 years for funneling $12 million to Hamas. And after the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, CAIR's founder Nihad Awad said he was 'happy to see' the terrorist strikes on the country. He later said his comments were taken out of context and that he condemned the violence on October 7. CAIR's spokesman Ibrahim Hooper said 'the American Muslim community has the same right to apply for nonprofit grants as other faith communities.' He added CAIR 'condemns all forms of unjust violence, including hate crimes, terrorism, ethnic cleansing and genocide as well as all forms of bigotry, including ani-Black racism, Islamophobia, antisemitism and anti-Palestinian racism.' Elsewhere, DHS earmarked $10.3 million in disaster relief to the Islamic Circle of North America following Hurricane Harvey in 2017. The group was accused by the Middle East Forum and other think tanks that study extremism of acting as the US-based proxy for Jamaat-e-Islam, which has been linked to violence and terrorism in South Asia. ICNA has denied being a proxy for the group. The Islamic Society of Baltimore, a mosque and community center where the FBI conducted surveillance after it caught one of its members plotting to bomb an Army recruiting center in Maryland in 2010, was awarded $375,000 in DHS grants between 2017 and 2023, the report says. The group was under surveillance by the FBI for several years beginning in 2010 and was dubbed 'a breeding ground for terrorists.' The group did not return a request for comment. Mosques in Michigan and Texas that preach Iran's extreme brand of Shi'a Islam received $750,000. 5 A founder of CAIR Texas was sentenced to 65 years in federal prison for providing Hamas with more than $12 million. The terrorist group organized the October 7, 2023 attack against Israel that left 1,200 dead. The Islamic House of Wisdom, a mosque in Dearborn, received $330,000 in 2023, according to the report. The group is led by Imam Mohammed Ali Elahi, who has close ties to the Iranian regime and mourned the 2010 death of Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah, Hezbollah's spiritual guide and a proponent of suicide bombing. Elahi did not return repeated requests for comment. Other groups with alleged ties to radicalism received the rest of the $25 million in grants, per Middle East Forum. 'DHS officials must be more discerning,' said the report. 'Under FEMA's latest… guidelines, grantees may use security grants to install bulletproof glass and security fencing, or even to hire armed security guards [at their US-based offices]. 'Should an insular, fundamentalist commune that expresses loyalty to Al Shabaab or Al-Qaeda receive funding for these purposes?' Since taking office, the Trump administration has fired hundreds of DHS employees in order to streamline the bureaucracy of the federal government. 'We won't rest until Congress ensures that future administrations cannot fund extremists in the name of fighting extremism,' Baird told The Post.

Taliban to shower Kabul with flowers from helicopters for their takeover anniversary
ISLAMABAD -- The Taliban will shower Kabul with flowers from helicopters to mark the fourth anniversary of their return to power in Afghanistan, an official said Thursday. The Taliban seized control of the country on August 15, 2021, weeks before the U.S. and NATO withdrew their forces after a costly, two-decade war. Defense Ministry helicopters will perform 'beautiful aerial displays' above the Afghan capital on Friday to 'shower the city' with colorful flowers, according to a note from Habib Ghofran, the spokesman for the Information and Culture Ministry. There will be sports performances from Afghan athletes from the afternoon until the early evening, said Ghofran. The festivities come as Afghanistan struggles with a massive influx of refugees from neighboring countries, a faltering economy and cuts in foreign funding, especially from the U.S. Almost 10 million people face acute food insecurity and one in three children is stunted. Black and white Taliban flags were displayed across Kabul on Thursday. Ahsan Ullah Khan, from northern Sar-e-Pul province, encouraged the Afghan diaspora to return so they could see how peaceful the country was and how happy people were. But Kabul resident, Zafar Momand, said Afghans needed more than peace. 'Along with peace we need employment and education opportunities. If these problems are solved then Afghanistan is the best country to live," Momand said. "Women are also an important part of society. They should also have education and work opportunities.' Females are barred from education beyond sixth grade, many jobs and most public spaces. It was not immediately clear if women would be present at or permitted to attend Friday's festivities. Last year's takeover anniversary celebrations were held at Bagram Airfield, once the center of America's war to unseat the Taliban and hunt down the al-Qaida perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks.
