AITA president Anil Jain asked the Delhi High Court to nullify the September 2024 federation elections, prompting irate Executive Committee members to call a meeting on June 27.
All India Tennis Association (AITA)
The All India Tennis Association (AITA) president, Anil Jain, who faced a no-confidence motion by state associations last year, has requested the Delhi High Court to declare the federation elections held in September 2024 null and void.
This has led to irate Executive Committee members calling for a meeting on June 27. One of the affiliated units of the AITA alleged that Jain had used his position for personal gains.
The no-confidence motion was withdrawn before the AGM that elected a new body. However, the election results remained sealed in court due to a petition by Somdev Devvarman and Purav Raja challenging the validity of the polls, leaving the newly-elected office bearers outside the system.
In response to the same petition, Jain, in his prayer filed on May 26, requested the court to declare the AITA elections null and void but urged it not to appoint a Committee of Administrators (CoA), citing potential objections and adverse reactions from the ITF (world governing body) and the ATF (Asian body), which would hinder AITA's functioning.
Jain's prayer stated that the constitution could be amended, and AITA's efficient functioning could be ensured under the court's supervision by the present management. However, the EC members claimed that Jain did not consult them before filing the reply on behalf of the Federation.
'Such a reply needed EC concurrence. He can't just go and file it in court like this. EC has to pass a resolution first. He is trying to disqualify all other members," Hironmoy Chatterjee, who issued the EC meeting notice, told PTI.
'As of today, unauthorized people are running the organisation," Chatterjee added. Jain told PTI that he did not need to consult anyone.
'I am still President of AITA. They did not consult me when they filed a writ against the Secretary General. They have a vested interest. I did not agree with the election process, so I did not file my nomination. They did not follow the tenure guidelines of the Sports Code," Jain said.
'AITA should comply with the Sports Code. It is fair. The EC meeting they have called is also illegal. The Secretary General has not called it, and I have not been consulted about it," he said.
'They had brought that no-confidence motion against me on filthy and baseless grounds."
The AITA constitution states that the Secretary General can convene meetings of the Central Council and Executive Committee with the president's consent.
Chatterjee, who is also president of the Bengal Tennis Association (BTA), explained that the constitution also empowers EC members to call a meeting if the Secretary General does not do so within a month of receiving a written requisition from three members.
'We can call an EC meeting. Clause 8 (d) (iii) of AITA Rules and Regulations empowers us to do that," Chatterjee, who is also AITA vice president (Sports), said.
When Secretary General Anil Dhupar was approached, he admitted that such a rule empowers members to call for a meeting, but it should be under 'normal circumstances".
'As of today, the matter is sub-judice, so I told them it is advisable to take the court's direction before calling an EC meeting," Dhupar told PTI. The EC meeting notice, issued on June 16, clarified that it would discuss the role of the Secretary General as per the AITA Constitution.
Dhupar has attained the age of 70, and the Sports Code does not allow office bearers to remain in office beyond that.
'Recently, the BCCI appointed an interim president after Roger Binny attained the age of 70. So Mr Dhupar should also quit," said another EC member.

Rs 2,000-cr classroom ‘scam' under AAP tenure: ED searches 37 locations, party hits out

Multiple teams of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) Wednesday conducted searches at 37 places as part of its money laundering probe into alleged corruption to the tune of Rs 2,000 crore in the construction of classrooms in government schools, which took place during the previous AAP government's tenure. 'The ED carried out the searches after it recently registered a criminal case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), taking cognisance of a Delhi Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) FIR into the said allegations. At least 37 premises of contractors and private entities linked to the case have been searched by ED officials,' a source said. On April 30, the ACB registered a First Information Report (FIR) against former AAP ministers and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain over alleged corruption in the construction of classrooms. While Sisodia held the Finance and Education portfolios, Jain had charge of the Public Works Department, which was the agency at the helm of the construction work, sources said. 'The accused in the ED case are the same. The ED is likely to summon them in the coming days for questioning,' a source said. In response to the ED action, the AAP said: 'The BJP is relentlessly bulldozing jhuggis and demolishing livelihoods of the poor and marginalised across Delhi. These so-called raids are nothing but a desperate attempt to divert public attention from that reality. The allegations are baseless, politically motivated, and timed only to distract from the BJP's anti-people actions.' Officials said the alleged scam pertains to the construction of 12,748 classrooms or semi-permanent structures during the tenure of the AAP government. Officials said the project was reportedly awarded to some contractors associated with the AAP, and significant deviations and cost escalations were observed. They added that the consultant and architect for the project were appointed without following due procedure, and cost escalations were carried out through them. According to sources, the ED suspects that the execution of the projects (priority 1 and priority 2) was done with inflated costs, procedural lapses, and misuse of public funds. The ACB had issued summonses to the former ministers on June 3 in connection with the case. Jain was questioned on June 6 for over five hours. Sisodia was summoned on June 9 but did not turn up, citing his inability to do so. Earlier, both Sisodia and Jain were investigated and chargesheeted by the ED in separate money-laundering cases. Sisodia was arrested and chargesheeted by the agency in the alleged Delhi liquor scam case, while Jain was taken into custody in 2022 and later chargesheeted in an alleged hawala transactions and possession of disproportionate assets case.

New system to deliver voter ID cards within 15 days of update in poll rolls: EC

The Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday (June 18, 2025) introduced a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) enabling the delivery of voter ID cards within 15 days of an update in the electoral rolls. The Electors Photo Identity Cards or the EPIC cards, would be delivered in case of new enrolment of an elector as well as change in any particulars of an existing elector within 15 days, the poll body said in a statement. The new system will ensure real-time tracking of each stage right from the EPIC generation by the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) till the delivery of the voter ID card to the elector through the Department of Posts (DoP). Also Read | ECI sets the ball rolling on linking voter ID card with Aadhaar Voters will also receive notifications via SMS at each stage, keeping them informed about the status of their EPICs. For this purpose, the EC has introduced a dedicated IT module on its recently launched ECINet platform. Seamless delivery The new IT platform will replace the existing process by re-engineering the current system and streamlining the workflow. DoP's Application Programme Interface (API) will be integrated with the ECINet for seamless delivery, the statement said, adding this initiative aims to enhance service delivery while maintaining data security. Providing prompt and efficient electoral services to all its electors is a major focus area for the EC. While Opposition parties, led by the Congress, have alleged manipulations in voter lists, the EC has maintained that the process for additions and deletions is transparent, rigorous, and immune to arbitrary changes. Recently, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi had alleged 'industrial scale rigging' in 2024 Maharashtra Assembly polls. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, while delivering his keynote address at the Stockholm International Conference on 'Electoral Integrity' in Sweden earlier this month, said preparation of electoral rolls in India was one of the world's most 'rigorous and transparent' exercises and elections were held under the close watch of the political parties, candidates, voters, police and media, acting as 'concurrent auditors'.
