Omaha moves onto Summit semis with win over Kansas City
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The top-seeded Omaha Mavericks advanced to the Summit League semifinals with a 70-61 win over Kansas City Thursday night.
The Mavericks used a 16-4 surge late in the first half to take a 40-26 lead into the locker room. They scored the first six of the second half to balloon the advantage to 19. The Roos cut the deficit to seven on three occasions but the lead hovered in double figures much of the final 20 minutes.
Omaha shot 46% for the game, while Kansas City made just 33% of its shots.
Summit League Player of the Year Marquel Sutton led a quartet of Mavs in double figures with a game-high 28 points to go along with 11 rebounds for a double-double. JJ White notched 14, and Isaac Ondekane and Ja'Sean Glover added 10 apiece.
Jamar Brown was the lone Roo in double figures with 27 points as he played all 40 minutes.
Omaha is set to play in the semifinals Saturday at 7 p.m.

Arizona and North Carolina had a decisive Game 3 in their best-of-3 series while Miami and Louisville, in addition to Florida State and Oregon State were also tied at 1-1. Advertisement Elsewhere in the Super Regionals, Arkansas has a 1-0 lead over defending national champion Tennessee and winning on Sunday would send them to Omaha. LSU also won its opener versus West Virginia, as did Duke over Murray State and UCLA versus UTSA. Coastal Carolina was the first to team to qualify for the MCWS by finishing a sweep of Auburn on Saturday. UCLA 7, UTSA 0 The Bruins are returning to the Men's College World Series for the first time since 2013, when they won the national championship. UCLA finished off a sweep of UTSA in Los Angeles with a 7-0 win. RBI singles by Toussaint Bythewood in the fourth inning and Roch Cholowsky in the fifth gave the Bruins a 2-0 lead. The Bruins wouldn't need any more offense than that, but added two runs in the eighth when AJ Salgado scored on a throwing error by Roadrunners catcher Lorenzo Morresi followed by a sacrifice fly from Phoenix Call. UCLA tacked on three additional runs in the ninth on a 2-run single by Payton Brennan and RBI groundout from Bythewood. Advertisement Five UCLA pitchers kept UTSA off the scoreboard, led by starter Landon Stump's four scoreless innings with four hits allowed and five strikeouts. Chris Grothues was credited with the win, allowing no runs over 2 2/3 innings. Arkansas 11, Tennessee 4 The Volunteers will not repeat as national champions after being swept in the Fayetteville Super Regional by the host Razorbacks. After losing Saturday's opener, 4-3, Tennessee felt apart with its season and a return trip to Omaha at stake. Arkansas opened up a 7-1 lead with a five-run fourth inning. Logan Maxwell hit a grand slam off AJ Russell, the Vols' third pitcher of the inning. The Razorbacks loaded the bases on singles by Cam Kozeal and Reese Robinett, followed by an intentional walk to Charles Davalan to set up a force play. But Tennessee pitcher Liam Doyle allowed a run to score on a wild pitch and Brayden Krenzel hit Wehiwa Aloy with a pitch to load the bases again for Maxwell's big blow. Advertisement Loading the bases got the Vols in trouble again in the seventh. After a RBI double from Kuhio Aloy, Tennessee pitchers walked four consecutive batters, resulting in another two runs. Altogether, the Vols issued eight walks in the game. Tennessee followed up last season's national title with a seventh-place finish in the SEC at 16-14, though finished 46-18 overall. Louisville 3, Miami 2 Eddie King Jr.'s 2-out double scored Jake Munroe in the seventh inning to put the Cardinals on top. Jake Schweitzer, Justin West and Brennyn Cutts combined for a scoreless final two innings to put Louisville (40-22) among the eight teams going to Omaha. Ethan Eberle pitched five innings for Louisville, giving up a 2-run homer to Max Galvin among his six hits allowed. Schweitzer got the win with three scoreless innings, while Cutts earned the save by retiring the final Hurricanes batter of the game. Advertisement For Miami (35-27), Reese Lumpkin gave up two runs and five hits in 3 2/3 innings. But Will Smith was tagged with the loss after allowing King's RBI double. It was only the second hit he allowed in 2 2/3 innings with four strikeouts and two walks. Galvin and Daniel Cuvet each had two hits for Miami. Arizona 4, North Carolina 3 The Wildcats join the Chanticleers in Omaha, defeating the Tar Heels on their home field. Arizona took a 4-3 lead with a 3-run eighth inning as its first four batters reached base, helped out by an two throwing errors by UNC. Tommy Splaine first scored on a bunt single from Easton Breyfogle. Brendan Summerhill then walked to load the bases and Mason White drove in two runs with a single. A 3-run homer by Jackson Van De Brake gave North Carolina a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning, following consecutive singles from Carter French and Kane Kepley. Arizona starter Smith Bailey was charged with those three runs with five hits allowed, four strikeouts and three walks in six innings. Advertisement Ryan Lynch pitched seven innings for the Tar Heels, allowing three runs (two earned) with five strikeouts. Walker McDuffie took the loss after he allowed the go-ahead run to reach base in the eighth. Murray State 19, Duke 9 The Racers rebounded decisively after losing Saturday's Super Regionals opener to Duke, 7-4. Dom Decker and Will Vierling each drove in four runs, while Dan Tauken had three RBI to send the series to a decisive Game 3 on Monday. Duke took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on back-to-back homers by AJ Gracia and Ben Miller, but Murray State answered in the bottom of the frame with three runs beginning with Jonathan Hogart's leadoff home run. Both teams eventually traded five-run innings, but the Racers blew the game open with a nine-run seventh. The Blue Devils' Kyle Johnson and Racers' Isaac Silva each allowed six runs as starting pitchers. Yet while Jacob Hustedde and Graham Kelham combined to give up another three runs in 3 2/3 innings of relief, Duke's bullpen could not keep Murray State's lineup from lighting up the scoreboard. Seven more pitchers took the mound for the Blue Devils with five of them allowing two or more runs. Gabe Nard and Mark Hindy each gave up three runs in a combined 1 1/3 innings.

It looked for a minute like the Mountaineers were going to try to mount a rally. The Tigers, however, put an end to that. B5 - Auburn 1, Coastal Carolina Down a game in the series after losing in extra innings last night, the Tigers are clinging to a one-run lead. Clinging indeed. The Chanticleers loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth but couldn't get any runners home. Tennessee is the No. 14 overall seed but is clearly one of the most talented teams in the nation. The Vols have been undone this year by poor defense at times and the inability to find the right pitching combination in Game 3s of their weekend series — they lost the third game in six of their final seven SEC series. Arkansas' roster is elite, with great starting pitching, tons of options in the bullpen and an offense that led the SEC in runs scored (by 41!) in league games. We won't get the Liam Doyle vs. Zach Root pitching matchup in Game 1 since the Vols are giving their ace an extra day of rest, but No. 2 starter Marcus Phillips is very capable of slowing down the Hogs offense. One prediction I feel good about: There will be some fireworks at some point in this series. Another prediction: Arkansas in 3 Imagn Images The Blue Devils take down Murray State 7-4 in Game 1 of their series. The Blue Devils will clinch a trip to Omaha for the College World Series with a win on Sunday. That game is scheduled for noon. Imagn Images B8 - Duke 7, Murray State 4 Murray State has outhit Duke 8-to-5 and has had a runner on base in all but one inning but trails Duke 7-4 in the bottom of the eighth. The Racers have left nine men on base. B5 - LSU 7, West Virginia 1 The Tigers have used the long ball to take control of this one after trailing early. Steven Milam's grand slam has Alex Box Stadium ROCKING. Drama in Chapel Hill. Arizona forces a Game 3 by defeating North Carolina 10-8 in Game 2 of the Chapel Hill Regional. The Wildcats surged ahead with four runs in the bottom of the seventh and then held on when ace reliever Tony Pluta — who threw a career-high 52 pitches — worked around a leadoff single in the top of the ninth to retire the next three Tar Heels. Imagn Images We're going to have at least two Game 3s tomorrow. Arizona's comeback is complete as it holds off North Carolina 10-8. The two teams will play Game 3 tomorrow with the game time yet to be determined. What a turnaround from yesterday's 10-8 whitewash. Louisville and Miami are also headed for a Game 3. T5 - LSU 3, West Virginia 1 The Tigers finally get their offense going with a three-run home run by Derek Curiel. LSU's offense has been spotty all season, but the Tigers needed that one to get some life into their stadium. B6 - Duke 6, Murray State 2 Kyle Johnson does it again with a double in the sixth to score another run. Johnson has two doubles and a home run in three at-bats, and he has driven in five runs. What a day for a player who is only in the lineup because of a suspension. He really has stepped up today for Duke. Imagn Images B7 - Arizona 10, North Carolina 8 The Wildcats have answered the Tar Heels' four runs in the top of the seventh with four of their own in the bottom of the seventh, and the Wildcats are six outs from a Game 3 tomorrow. Will the Heels respond again? This game is bonkers. Imagn Images B7 - North Carolina 8, Arizona 8 And the Wildcats have shown that fight again as they've scored two runs in the seventh to tie the game up again. Have to mention again how impressed I am with the Wildcats' fight in Game 2 after being destroyed in Game 1. Coastal Carolina and Auburn are up next at 3 p.m. ET on ESPN2. The Chanticleers will book their trip to Omaha with a win after beating the Tigers in extra innings in Game 1 after a nearly two-hour weather delay. White Sox fall 7-5 to Royals after seventh inning, tie-breaking double
Jonathan India hit a tiebreaking double in Kansas City's two-run seventh inning, and the Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 7-5 on Sunday to avoid a series sweep. Salvador Perez and Bobby Witt Jr. each hit a two-run homer for Kansas City, which had lost three of four. Jac Caglianone went 4 for 4 in his sixth major league game. The Royals also got a big lift from Michael Lorenzen (4-6), who pitched six effective innings for his first win since April 29. The right-hander went 0-3 with a 6.89 ERA in his previous six starts. Miguel Vargas homered and drove in three runs for Chicago, which had won three in a row, matching a season high. Vargas drew a bases-loaded walk and Edgar Quero added an RBI single as the White Sox rallied for three runs in the ninth. But then Witt robbed Austin Slater of a run-scoring hit with a terrific diving catch at shortstop. With two out and the bases loaded, Carlos Estévez earned his 19th save when he struck out Tim Elko swinging. White Sox right-hander Mike Vasil allowed two runs and five hits over 3 1/3 innings in his first major league start. Perez's fifth homer tied it at 2 in the fourth, and the Royals went ahead to stay in the seventh. India drove in pinch-runner Drew Waters with a grounder down the third base line. After Witt popped out, Maikel Garcia made it 4-2 with an RBI single off Jordan Leasure. India tacked on a run-scoring single in the ninth. Tyler Alexander (3-6) took the loss in his first game with Chicago, allowing one run and five hits in three innings. The lefty signed a one-year deal with the White Sox before the game. The Royals finished with 16 hits, but they hit into five double plays. Key moment Witt made it 7-2 when he connected for his eighth homer in the ninth against Bryse Wilson. Key stat Caglianone went 2 for 21 in his first five games with Kansas City. Up next Royals: Following an off day, LHP Noah Cameron (2-1, 0.85 ERA) starts Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series at home against the New York Yankees.
