Madrid: A Lufthansa flight was flown by autopilot when the copilot, alone in the cockpit as the pilot had stepped away to use the bathroom, fainted, Spanish investigators said in a report about an incident last year that was released on Saturday.
The Airbus A321 flew without a pilot in charge for 10 minutes, the Spanish accident investigation authority CIAIAC said of the flight on February 17, 2024 from Frankfurt to Seville.
Lufthansa confirmed it was aware of the report and said its flight safety department had conducted an extensive internal investigation into the incident. But the company did not disclose the results of its investigation, stating, 'We ask for your understanding that we will not comment beyond the investigation report.'
Although the unconscious co-pilot apparently unintentionally operated the controls, the aircraft continued to fly stably thanks to the active autopilot.
The voice recorder captured strange noises in the cockpit during this time which were consistent with an acute medical emergency, the report said.
Some 10 minutes later, the captain managed to open the cockpit security door using an emergency code. He had completed training for such an eventuality a month beforehand.
The captain entered the normal door opening code five times in vain, which triggers a buzzer in the cockpit for the co-pilot to release the door, the report said.
A stewardess tried to contact the co-pilot using the onboard telephone. It is not possible to open these security doors by force as they are designed to prevent hijackings.
Eventually, the captain entered an emergency code, which allows the door to be opened without assistance from the cockpit. Just before the door would have opened automatically, the co-pilot managed to open it from the inside, despite his illness.
The pilot then decided to land the plane in Madrid as the co-pilot was very pale, sweating profusely and making strange movements.
The aircraft, which had 199 passengers and six crew members on board, landed safely and the co-pilot was brought to hospital. He had already received medical attention while on board from a doctor who was travelling on the plane.
The report found the co-pilot showed no signs of a pre-existing condition from past medical examinations and current tests.
Second person needed in cockpit at all times? The incident prompts a reassessment of the recurring question as to whether airlines should reintroduce continuous double occupancy in the cockpit for safety reasons.
The report urged the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to encourage flight operators to reassess relevant safety guidelines.
It is advisable that a second authorized person should always be present in the cockpit when one of the two pilots has to leave for a toilet break or other tasks, the report said. (DPA)

dpa Rome The Catholic Church has a new pope: Chicago Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected on Thursday as the new head of the Catholic Church after just 24 hours of conclave in the Sistine Chapel. As pontiff, the 69-year-old will take the name Leo XIV. Previously, Prevost served in the Vatican as a curial cardinal, heading the important dicastery - effectively the ministry - responsible for bishops worldwide. Earlier in his career, he worked as a missionary and bishop in Peru and served as the prior general of the Augustinian Order. He is regarded as someone who can mediate well between the conservative and reform-oriented factions within the Catholic Church. Pope Leo, who speaks fluent Italian and Spanish, addressed the massive crowd in front of the chapel in both languages in his first comments as head of the world's 1.4 billion Catholics. For the first time in two millennia of church history, a pontiff comes from the United States. For the past 12 years, Argentine Pope Francis led the faithful worldwide. Shortly after 6pm (1600 GMT), white smoke rose from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel - the signal that the 133 cardinals from around the world had reached a two-thirds majority. Russia says two missing after cargo ship sinks in Mediterranean

Two crew members are missing after a Russian cargo ship sank in international waters in the Mediterranean after an explosion on board, according to Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Ursa Major sank between Spain and Algeria 'after an explosion in the engine room', the ministry's crisis centre said on Tuesday. The vessel, built in 2009, was controlled by Oboronlogistika, a company that is part of the Russian Ministry of Defence's military construction operations, which had previously said it was en route to the Russian far eastern port of Vladivostok with two giant port cranes lashed to its deck. The crisis centre said in a statement that 14 of the ship's 16 crew members had been rescued and brought to Spain, but two were still missing. It did not say what had caused the engine room explosion. Unverified video footage of the ship heavily listing to its starboard side with its bow much lower down in the water than usual was filmed on December 23 by a passing ship and published on Russia's news outlet on Tuesday. Oboronlogistika, the ship's ultimate owner, said in a statement on December 20 that the Ursa Major, which LSEG data showed was previously called Sparta III, had been carrying specialised port cranes due to be installed at the port of Vladivostok as well as parts for new icebreakers. Two giant cranes could be seen strapped to the deck in the unverified video footage. LSEG ship tracking data shows the vessel departed from the Russian port of Saint Petersburg on December 11 and was last seen sending a signal at 22:04 GMT on Monday between Algeria and Spain. On leaving St Petersburg, it had indicated that its next port of call was Vladivostok, not the Syrian port of Tartous as earlier. The operator and owner is a company called SK-Yug, part of Oboronlogistika, according to LSEG data. Oboronlogistika and SK-Yug declined to comment on the ship's sinking. Spanish news outlet El Espanol said on its website that crew members had been evacuated to the Spanish port of Cartagena and that several vessels, including a Spanish Navy ship, had taken part in rescuing the crew. It said the vessel had been due to arrive in Vladivostok on January 22.
