RCB victory parade stampede: Karnataka Deputy CM Shivakumar calls for calm, says ‘we shortened the programme'

Indian Express3 days ago

Defending his administration after at least 10 people were feared dead in a stampede-like situation outside the Chinnaswamy stadium, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said that he has spoken to the Police Commissioner and his government had shortened the programme organised to honour the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) Men's Cricket Team on Wednesday.
The RCB team clinched the Indian Premier League Title for the first time in 18 years after defeating Punjab Kings by six runs in the final. A large crowd had gathered during the day as a victory parade was scheduled to be held in the evening, which led to a stampede-like situation.
Those injured have been carried to hospitals and Shivakumar said he will visit them later, to not 'disturb the doctors taking care of the patients,' according to news agency ANI.
'I have spoken to the Police Commissioner and everyone. I will also go to the hospital later. I do not want to disturb the doctors who are taking care of the patients. The exact number cannot be told now. We appeal to the people to remain calm. We shortened the programme. The programme ended within 10 minutes. We are trying to make everything normal…Lakhs of people came.'

Shivakumar, had in one of the first statements after the stampede-like situation broke out, asserted that this was not a 'controllable crowd,' and 'apologised' to the people of Bengaluru for not holding an open-bus victory parade or a 'procession'.
'I apologise to all the people of Bengaluru and Karnataka. We wanted to take out a procession, but the crowd is uncontrollable,' he had said earlier in the evening, adding that the police denied permission to hold an open-bus victory parade as the 'crowd gathered more than they anticipated'.
Meanwhile, a war of words broke out in the political sphere, with the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party

Vaibhav Suryavanshi Hits Towering Sixes In U19 NCA Camp Ahead Of England Tour

Last Updated: Suryvanshi will open the innings for the Ayush Mhatre-led India U-19 team in the upcoming five youth ODIs and two youth Tests against England. 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, after making headlines for his explosive batting for Rajasthan Royals in the recently concluded 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League, has kicked off his preparations for India's upcoming U19 tour of England. The India U-19 team will travel to England later this month to take on the hosts in five youth ODIs and two youth tests. The first youth ODI will be played at County Ground in Hove on June 27. 17-year-old Mumbai batter Ayush Mhatre will lead the India U-19 team. The Mumbai-based top-order batter was announced as India's captain last month. He will open the inning with Suryavanshi. Suryavanshi, who won the Superstriker of the Season award in IPL 2025 for amassing a total of 252 runs in seven matches for Rajasthan Royals with a strike rate of 206.55, has kicked off his preparations ahead of the month-long tour. In a video going viral on the internet, the left-handed batter can be seen hitting towering sixes during the NCA U19 camp in Bengaluru. During RR's 10th league match played against Gujarat Titans at Sawai Mansingh Stadium on April 28, Suryavanshi hammered a 35-ball century and helped RR chase down the target of 210 runs in 15.5 overs. By crossing the 100-run mark in just 35 balls, Suryavanshi became the youngest batter (14 years, 31 days) in history to score a century in a T20 match, and he also broke the record of being the fastest Indian batter to score an IPL century. In that match, Suryavanshi hammered 11 sixes, which helped him equal the record of hitting the most sixes in an IPL match by an Indian batter. In RR's last match of the IPL 2025 season, which was played at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on May 20, Suryavanshi scored a fifty (57) against Chennai Super Kings. He faced 33 balls during his stay at the crease in the 188-run chase and hammered 4 fours and as many sixes. First Published: June 07, 2025, 15:27 IST

Mesmerising Visuals Emerge As Kashmir's 1st Vande Train Crosses Iconic Anji Bridge

Last Updated: Vande Bharat Express was inaugurated by PM Modi yesterday. The bridge itself is an architechtural marvel as it provides seamless connectivity between Katra and Reasi Visuals have emerged from inside the Kashmir's first Vande Bharat Express train as it crossed the Anji Khad Bridge on Saturday. As the Vande train moved on the bridge, the video captured the mesmerising beauty of the Kashmir valley. The Vande Bharat Express was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday. The bridge itself is an architechtural marvel as it provides seamless connectivity between Katra and Reasi. The Kashmir's Vande train, a symbol of progress and connectivity, will run daily between Katra and the Kashmir Valley. Earlier, passengers from any part of the country could travel by train up to Katra only. From there, they would have to take road or air route to reach Srinagar and the Kashmir Valley but now they have train connectivity till Kashmir. #WATCH | Visuals from inside of Kashmir's first Vande Bharat Express train as it crosses the Anji Khad Bridge, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday. — ANI (@ANI) June 7, 2025 Further, a couple from Varanasi celebrated their son's birthday on board the Kashmir's Vande train by cutting the cake as it reached Anji Khad Bridge The child's father Rakesh Jaiswal said they celebrated the birthday on train so it becomes memorable for his son named Moksh. 'It was a coincidence that it was our son's birthday the same day PM Modi was going to flag off this train. We thought we should celebrate our son's birthday on the first journey of this train so that his birthday becomes memorable for him," news agency ANI quoted him as saying. Now, the train will not only cut down travel time but also boost tourism and make Kashmir more accessible. The Anji Bridge, on which the train will travel, holds the distinction of being first cable-stayed railway bridge in India. Connecting Katra and Reasi, the bridge has 96 cables. It is designed to withstand the region's challenging terrain and seismic activity. Built by Konkan Railway, the bridge spans the Anji River – a tributary of the Chenab. Situated about 80 kilometres from Jammu, the Anji Bridge is 331 metres above the riverbed and stretches 725 metres across. The total length of cable strand used in the bridge is an impressive 653 kilometres. Over 8,200 metric tonnes of structural steel were used for its construction. Besides the Vande train, PM Modi also unveiled the 111-kilometre Katra-Banihal section of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project on Friday that now allows direct train connectivity to Kashmir from Jammu. A remarkable feat of engineering, the USBRL is a 272-km-long project, and barring the 111-km section, trains were already operating on the remaining 161 km from both ends. Altogether, the project includes 36 tunnels (collectively 119 km) and 943 bridges. The railways ministry believes that the USBRL project – sanctioned in 1994-95 – is perhaps the most difficult new railway line project undertaken in the country post-independence. The journey between Katra and Banihal will pass through 37 bridges with a combined length of seven km. The list includes 26 mega and major bridges and 11 minor ones. When starting the journey from Katra, passengers will come across a number of minor bridges and at least four unique bridges on their way to Srinagar. First Published: June 07, 2025, 15:15 IST

"Top Cop Was Part Of Solution": Kiran Bedi On Suspension Over Bengaluru Stampede

New Delhi: The suspension of Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda over the Chinnaswamy stadium stampede is not "rational and justified", former IPS officer Kiren Bedi said on Saturday, as she joined a string of voices from the police association to condemn the action. "Every case of law and order is unique. We need somebody who has to explain (what happened). He had to be heard. Did the commissioner ignore everybody? How can you just pick up the commissioner? It is unfair. He has not worked in isolation," Ms Bedi told NDTV. "Any suspension which is not rational, justified, explained is demoralising for the entire force. This suspension order is taken like a fly out of a milk. You need to find out if there is a swarm of flies...," she added. The former IPS officer said the people of Bengaluru do not even know who played what role in managing the crowd that had gathered outside the stadium. "He (Mr Dayananda) did not work in isolation. There was a whole headquarters, the secretariat and the political leadership involved," she said. Eleven people - all below the age of 40, including a 14-year-old, died and more than 50 suffered injuries in the stampede that broke out at the stadium gate on Wednesday, when a large number of people thronged to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)'s first-ever victory in the Indian Premier League. A day later, Mr Dayananda was suspended for alleged dereliction of duty, and Seemanth Kumar Singh was appointed to the top post. Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal was also transferred and was replaced by Sudheer Kumar Reddy. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's political secretary K Govindaraj was sacked and head of the intelligence department, Hemant Nimbalkar, was transferred. Four people, including an RCB marketing head, have been arrested so far. The police commissioner is a part and parcel of the whole system that has either delivered or not delivered, Ms Bedi said. "If he is a part of the problem, then he is a part of the solution? How can you remove the solution? She also said that a police assessment is very vital to understand the sequence of events that lead to such tragedies. "Their assessment is very vital to be heard in meetings held by people like the chief secretary... You cannot just pick and choose. It is an administration vs an organisation affair," she said. Ms Bedi's remarks came as several of her retired colleagues in the association criticised Mr Dayananda's suspension and alleged the police were being made a "scapegoat" in the case. Echoing similar sentiments, former Bengaluru Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao said: "Sacking a police officer like Dyanand is unacceptable. He and his team safeguarded the city all night and now, he has been bulldozed," he said. Photo Credit: PTI Mr Rao also alleged that the action was taken at the behest of Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, who are like a "rocket without a tail". "It was their mistake. They brought the (RCB) team on a chartered flight. Mr Shivakumar thought he would identify himself with the youth. A police commissioner and his entire team being suspended is unheard of," he said. He said the suspended officials can approach the Central Administrative Tribunal to dispute the government action since the police association cannot take up individual cases. Sources in the police association alleged a clear violation of the law by the RCB and sought a thorough probe into the matter, "without any political pressure". "In the light of the facts available in the public domain, it seems the police have been made a scapegoat in this case to save face," a source said. "The sequence of events show that everyone at the top level of the government was aware of the program. To say that the police commissioner did not consult senior officials is not correct," the source added.
