Mumbai Woman Gets Ex-Lover Jailed In False Rape Case, Arrested

Mumbai: A Mumbai woman working in a private bank has landed in police net for lackmailing and attempting to extort Rs 1 crore from her ex-partner and IT professional by filing a false rape case after a break-up, an official said on Thursday. Mumbai's Charkop Police arrested Dolly Kotak, who, with the help of her brother and four others, accessed the IT professional's data in the bank and ended up getting him arrested and sacked. Kotak and the five others, including her close friend, have now been booked on the direction of a Mumbai Magistrate whom the victim managed to convince about the alleged blackmail plot and mala fide intentions of Kotak. The magistrate has directed the police to investigate the cognizable offence under Section 175(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and the Information Technology Act, apart from other penal provisions. The woman's intention of extortion came to the fore when she approached the victim's sister, asking her to shell out Rs 1 crore in exchange for withdrawing the false complaint and giving a 'No Objection' statement, the police said. Kotak's brother Sagar, who is already out on bail in a POCSO case, was helped by three bank employees to access the victim's spending patterns, photos and other personal information for blackmailing him, the police said. The victim's ordeal began in May 2024 with Kotak bombarding his phone with threatening messages to extort money. One such message read: "You will never win and die in pain. Give money or die in jail", the police said. Initially, the victim withstood the threats from the blackmailer but in the process lost his job when the "objectionable" details and photos, stolen from his computers and social media accounts, were sent to his employer, the police said. The police said that for almost one year, Kotak linked her mobile number to the victim's email, tracked his movement and accessed his financial information and transactions to blackmail him.

Probe Agency's Conviction Rate In PMLA Cases Over 92% In Last 5 years: Data

New Delhi: The conviction rate secured by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in money laundering cases over the last five years has been more than 92 per cent, an official data said. According to the data accessed by PTI, various special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) courts delivered judgments in 41 cases registered under the said law between January 2020 and July 2025, out of which conviction orders were passed in 38 instances leading to the conviction of 98 accused. The conviction rate is calculated by using the formula of taking the total number of cases in which the accused have been convicted as a percentage of total cases decided on merits on the issue of money laundering, according to officials and the data. Hence, the conviction rate secured by the ED in money laundering cases over the last five years comes to 92.68 per cent (38/41X100) in about five years, they said. The ED has been regularly targeted by political parties in the opposition, claiming its actions were biased and that its conviction rate was "poor". A report prepared by the agency for the 2024-25 financial year said while the legal framework under the PMLA provides for a "structured mechanism" for prosecution, the timely completion of trials continued to face several "systemic" and "procedural" hurdles. The report released in May said a "primary challenge" in this context was that prosecution of money laundering cases was "intrinsically" linked to the progress of the investigation or trial of the corresponding predicate or primary offence. "Delays in those proceedings invariably impact the PMLA trial," the report said. According to the PMLA scheme, which came into force in 2005, the ED cannot register an independent case but has to base its complaint on a primary FIR of the police or any other investigating agency, which is called the predicate offence. The data also said the ED registered just over 5,063 money laundering cases over the same period (January 2020-July 2025) and the courts ordered confiscation of assets worth Rs 55.14 crore in the context of conviction cases. The courts also ordered confiscation of assets to the tune of Rs 15,558.21 crore under section 8(7) of PMLA (cases where trial cannot be conducted) during the same period. PTI NES KSS KSS

Man Gets 20-Year Jail Term For Raping Step-Daughter

New Delhi: A Delhi court has sentenced a man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping his teen stepdaughter, observing there was no straitjacket formula for sentencing. The court said the "twin objectives" of deterrence of crimes and reformation of a convict needed to be balanced. Additional sessions judge Ankit Mehta was hearing the arguments on the quantum of sentencing against the 32-year-old man, convicted for rape under IPC and Section 6 (aggravated penetrative assault) of the POCSO Act. On August 2, the court said, "Accused inserted his finger in the private parts of the victim, amounting to rape or penetrative sexual assault. It was further proved that the convict had watched the victim while she was taking a bath and had also lain down upon her." The sentencing, the court said, had to be commensurate with the relevant factors, including nature and gravity of the offence, how the crime was committed, the condition of the victim, the convict's age and whether the convict was a habitual offender. "There is no straitjacket formula for the same, and as such, both the aggravating and mitigating factors need to be considered. Further, sentencing needs to balance the twin objectives of deterrence and reform of the convict," the verdict said. The court awarded Rs 10.5 lakh compensation to the minor survivor.
