Romualdez vows 'no backroom haggling' in budget

Speaker Martin Romualdez vowed to heed President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.'s call for a budget overhaul to ensure that flood control projects will be corruption-free. 'The President's message was clear: make the government work better for the people. As Speaker, I am committed to making sure the budget reflects that – every centavo must go where it's needed most,' Romualdez said. "The House leadership is prepared to act decisively on long-needed structural changes to the national budget process, and that these reforms must prioritize accountability, eliminate inefficiencies and ensure that spending directly addresses the needs of Filipino families," he added. Romualdez then reiterated his call for opening the bicameral conference committee discussions, wherein the Senate and House versions of the national budget are reconciled, to the public to prevent money business. 'No backroom haggling. The people have every right to know how their money is being spent. If we want trust, we have to earn it, starting with an open bicam,' he stressed. 'We need to put food on the table, ensure no family is crushed by hospital bills, and create jobs that restore dignity and hope. The House will do its job with focus and compassion. Because at the end of the day, that budget isn't about institutions. It's about lives,' Speaker Romualdez added. In his fourth State of the Nation Address, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. warned government personnel who steal public funds, such as those for flood control projects, that they will be dealt with under the law. —LDF, GMA Integrated News

SONA 2025: Marcos eyes expanding 'Walang Gutom' program to reach 750K homes

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s State of the Nation Address (SONA 2025) on Monday said that the government aims to help around 600,000 people in the government's Walang Gutom program. "Sa ikalawang taon ng ating Walang Gutom program, mabibigyan ng tulong ang anim na raang libong pinakanangangailangang kabahayan sa kanilang nutrisyon," said Marcos in his speech. (In the second year of our Walang Gutom program, six hundred thousand of the neediest households will be provided with nutritional assistance.) (And by 2027, we will increase the number of households reached by our feeding program to seven hundred and fifty thousand.) The President also said that the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Department of Education are also working to push the government's nutrition program in schools and day care centers. (DSWD and DepEd continue their feeding program for daycare centers and public schools, which has provided nutritious food and milk to more than three and a half million students nationwide.) (If we extend these programs next year, with the help of an additional one billion pesos in funding, the DSWD will further increase the number of children who will be provided with nutritious food," added Marcos.) —VAL, GMA Integrated

SONA 2025: Marcos orders inclusion of homeless in 4Ps

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., in his State of the Nation Address (SONA 2025) on Monday directed the inclusion of homeless individuals in the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) and other programs of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). Sila ang pinaka-nangangailangan ng tulong ng pamahalaan,' Marcos said during his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA). (We think of our fellow countrymen who are living in the streets. They are the ones in most need of help.) (To our LGUs, look for them and include them in the 4Ps and other programs of the DSWD. So, we can help them back on their feet and they can start their journey in improving their lives.) He said that under his administration, more than 5 million families were beneficiaries of the conditional cash grant of the 4Ps. The 4Ps serves as a national poverty reduction strategy and a human capital investment program that provides conditional cash transfers to poor households for a maximum period of seven years to improve the health, nutrition, and education of children aged 0 to 18. Meanwhile, he said that the lives of 500,000 families improved under the program. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
