I thought it was ridiculous NAB asked me why I wanted to withdraw my own money... staff didn't like my joke and now I have to switch banks
An Australian business owner has complained he now has to switch banks because he was banned from withdrawing his own money over a poorly received joke.
Rohan Cannon took to TikTok to explain that he buys manufacturing equipment from overseas for his business - natural wellness and skincare company CannonBalm - and needed to send the payment directly to them.
'I've got to get it delivered from the factory in China that's been making it, so I went to the bank branch to transfer the money to the manufacturers,' Mr Cannon said.
'They're like, "your international transfer limits too high, what are you transferring money for?" and I said it was for some equipment.'
He then said the staff member told him he would have to ring phone banking over the $3,500 amount, which he did from inside the branch.
The customer service officer on phone banking then asked him again what he wanted to withdraw the money for.
'I said, "I need to purchase goods'" and they're like, '"we need to know what the goods are." I felt this was completely unnecessary to go through it again and explain it to yet another National Australia Bank employee what I was spending my money on.
'So I was like, "I want it for cocaine and hookers" and well now I'm banned from making international transfers.'
The business owner said the staff member explained they could not release his money because the bank could not 'support the illegal drug trade'.
'I said "I was kidding about that but I need to buy some equipment" and they said that it was too late we've got the recording of you saying that's what you want to spend your money on.
'I said, "so I'll never be able to transfer the money I need out of my account internationally?" and they're were like, "one day you might be able to again" and so now I've got to close my account.
'I've got to open a new account with another bank and change all of my banking details just so that I can order the equipment I need to keep manufacturing product in Australia.
'That's how f***ing crazy the world has become.'
Social media users were divided with some taking Mr Cannon's side and others pointing out the bank was just doing its due diligence.
'These banks have no right to ask their customers what they want to with their money,' one person said.
Some argued the banks are required to check for anti-money laundering reasons or that, 'It's because people get scammed regularly and then the banks get the blame'.
'At my local branch if you want to withdraw or transfer more than $2,000 they ask you what are you using it for? and my answer is always the same, none of your business,' another said.
'That's why I don't keep my money in the bank,' another said.
One said they had 'learnt to have no loyalty to any bank, insurance or phone company'.
'If you won't take care of me or help me I will just move. My car insurance just went up by $14 a month... so I said okay I will look elsewhere.' they said.
'Imagine when cash is gone and they have complete control over everything.'

Man who left his wife with a permanent disability then dumped her at hospital is sent to jail
A man who shot his wife while she lay in bed and then dumped her at hospital has been jailed for seven years. Kamal Eljamal, 35, fired several shots through the garage roof of his home in Condell Park in Sydney 's south-west in January 2023. One of the bullets went through the mattress of the bed where his 37-year-old wife, Georgina Vlahos, was laying at the time. The bullet fractured her spine and ribs, leaving her with a permanent spinal disability. After shooting his wife, Eljamal drove her to the hospital and told staff that he 'found her like this'. He then returned home to clean the house. Eljamal pleaded guilty to causing grievous actual bodily harm and using a pistol while not authorised to do so on February 5. Ms Vlahos had forgiven her husband, but the injuries remained extremely serious. 'She will never walk again,' District Court Judge Sean Grant said on Friday. 'A message needs to be sent to the community that if you possess and use a firearm (unlawfully), you will be sent to jail for a long time.' When police arrived to search the property the day after the incident, they found several bullet holes around the house. Eljamal's pistol was never found. 'It is disturbing that the firearm has not been recovered and remains in the community,' Judge Grant said. Eljamal had previously been convicted for supplying illicit drugs and had a longstanding substance abuse disorder, the court was told. Since his arrest in February 2023, Eljamal has completed two stints in full-time rehabilitation therapy and spent time in custody. Judge Grant took his efforts to rehabilitate into account, but was unable to conclude he would not be before a court again. He maintained Eljamal should not benefit from the injuries he inflicted by receiving a lesser sentence to care for his wife. As a result of her spinal impairment, Ms Vlahos requires assistance to complete daily tasks including showering and using the toilet. But there were other people who had been, and could continue, providing her assistance, the judge said. Eljamal was ordered to serve at least four years and three months in prison. With backdating for time already served, Eljamal will be eligible for parole in April 2028.

Bank of Ireland warns of spike in scam targeting customers
Bank of Ireland is issuing a warning to the public following a dramatic spike in a sophisticated 'safe account' scam. Fraudsters are targeting customers with convincing fake texts and phone calls, tricking them into transferring their money to bogus 'safe accounts', in many cases via Revolut. Advertisement The Bank has seen a tenfold increase in reports of this scam in just 24 hours, compared to weekly levels earlier this year. Customers have been receiving text messages requesting that they call a phone number about a suspicious transaction or activity. The message claims to be from Bank of Ireland, and the message will sound like a genuine Bank of Ireland text, with messages often saying "Do you recognise this transaction?'; or 'A transaction for [value] to [merchant] was declined and your card has been placed on hold' - followed by 'if this was not you / if you don't recognise this / etc. please call us back on [callback phone number]. The callback number will be answered by someone claiming to be from Bank of Ireland, and there has been suspicious transactions and the customer's account is compromised. Advertisement The person will then be asked if they have a Revlout or other secondary account. If they say yes, they will be told to move their money in their Bank of Ireland account into their own Revolut account/ or secondary account. The victim is then told they then need to move their money from their Revolut account to a new 'safe' account. Callback numbers are usually landline numbers including 01 / 1800 / regional codes.

Pregnant teacher, 36, who had ‘sex with pupil, 15, after she groomed him' breaks down in tears in court
A PREGNANT teacher accused having sex with a 15-year-old pupil after grooming him has been granted bail. Karly Rae, 36, was arrested in October at her home in New South Wales, Australia on suspicion having intercourse with the boy, who attends her school. 3 3 Rae is a special needs teacher - but the schoolboy is not believed to have special needs. There is also no suggestion that the student is the father of her unborn child. Rae is alleged to have had sex with the pupil on October 4 last year, shortly before her arrest, according to court docs seen by The Daily Telegraph. Rae has pleaded not guilty to all charges against her - which also include possession of child abuse material and grooming a child for sex. During a bail hearing at the NSW Supreme Court on Friday, so the court heard Rae was initially granted bail, but later thrown behind bars for allegedly contacting the student. On January 14, she rang the alleged victim five times in two hours to persuade him to "give a false version of events", the court heard, which was said to breach a domestic violence order in place. Instead of agreeing, the teen told his mother what had happened and went to the police. Rae was then arrested and has been locked up for the past four months. However, the judge granted Rae bail on Friday under strict conditions, after hearing about her "high risk" pregnancy. Justice Dhanji said: "The applicant is 23 weeks pregnant, due to give birth in September." Evil mum jailed for SELLING daughter, 6, 'to healer who wanted eyes & skin' The expecting mother reportedly sobbed silently on the video link at the mention of her pregnancy. The judge noted her pregnancy was high risk owing to her gestational diabetes and history of miscarriages. But he also ruled that, due to the nature of the allegations against Rae, her child will be unable to stay with her in custody. Rae was slapped with at least 14 bail condition - including home detention, a ban on social media use, and a requirement to report to Toronto Police Station three times a week. The judge also said Rae is "no longer able to work as a teacher" and its "highly improbable" she will make attempts to have sex with a child. Earlier in the week, Rae pleaded not guilty to five charges via video link at Newcastle Magistrates Court. These included aggravated sexual intercourse with a child aged between 14 and 16, grooming a child for unlawful sexual activity and possession of child abuse material. Additional charges include acting to pervert the course of justice and breaching the violence order after allegedly contacting the student in January. Rae's case will go to trial in the District Court and will be arraigned in July.
