Uttar Pradesh to set up 2,700 smart classrooms, 1,780 already operational
The Uttar Pradesh government is giving a major push to digital education in urban areas by setting up thousands of smart classrooms in government schools. As part of this effort, the Urban Development Department is developing over 2,700 technology-enabled classrooms aimed at improving learning experiences and access for students, especially those from low-income families.As of now, about 1,780 of these classrooms have already been completed and are in use.advertisementThe department said this initiative is helping students from economically weaker backgrounds gain access to modern, tech-based education, leading to a steady rise in school enrolments.
'This effort has led to a noticeable improvement in student attendance and enrolment in government schools in urban areas,' said Amrit Abhijat, Principal Secretary, Urban Development Department. 'We are taking urban education to a new dimension. These smart classrooms are not just connecting students with technology but also preparing them for the future.'The classrooms are being developed under various schemes. Of the total, 1,183 smart classrooms are being set up under the Smart City Mission with a sanctioned budget of Rs 160.83 crore.Out of these, 1,088 classrooms are already operational.KAYAKALP INITIATIVE, ABHYUDAYA COMPOSITE SCHOOL SCHEME TO TRANSFORM THE LEARNINGAnother 190 smart classrooms have been built under the Kayakalp initiative with an investment of Rs 57.66 crore. Under the Aspirational Cities initiative, 913 classrooms have been sanctioned at a cost of Rs 29.43 crore, of which 408 are in use, while the remaining 505 are still being constructed.advertisementThe department has also approved 398 new classrooms under other schemes.These include 25 classrooms under the CM Abhyudaya Composite School Scheme and 13 under the Vaishvik Nagaroday Yojana. An additional Rs 4.25 crore has been earmarked under Kayakalp projects to further boost classroom development.Officials believe this digital transformation is helping bridge the education gap for children in urban areas who earlier lacked access to technology-enabled learning.With more classrooms becoming functional, the state hopes to continue this momentum and ensure every child has access to quality education, regardless of economic status.

Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu seeks funds for tobacco farmers
Vijayawada: Chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu has requested Union commerce minister Piyush Goyal to allocate ₹150 crore from the tobacco board to the state govt to manage the ongoing burley tobacco purchases. He said that the state govt is purchasing about 20 million kg of burley tobacco by spending nearly ₹300 crore as traders did not pick up the stocks leaving the growers into deep trouble. Union minister Goyal visited chief minister Chandrababu Naidu's residence in Undavalli on Sunday and held discussions on various issues. The chief minister explained that the state govt set up tobacco purchase centres at seven locations in Bapatla, Guntur, Palnadu, and Prakasam districts to avoid further delay causing distress among the farming community. "The state govt deployed state marketing agency-markfed to purchase burley tobacco from growers and it was expected to cost around Rs 300 crore. The state's burden would greatly come down if the Centre grants at least Rs 150 crore from the surplus revenues of the tobacco board," said Naidu. He observed that bringing the cultivation of white and black burley tobacco too under the tobacco board jurisdiction would be help regulate the crop properly. Chief minister urged Goyal to reconsider reducing the import duty on oil palm to 10%. He explained that reducing import duty is causing palm oil farmers in the state to receive unfair prices and suffer significant losses. Chief minister highlighted that the decision to reduce import duty could hinder the goals of the National Mission on Edible Oils (NMEO) set by the centre. He suggested the union minister to hold discussions with the US regarding the duties imposed on aqua exports. "The 27% duty imposed by the US on seafood is impacting eight lakh aqua farmers in Andhra Pradesh. The Centre should exert pressure on USA to reduce the burden to relieve aqua farmers," said Naidu. He had also urged Goyal to reduce GST on mango pulp from 12% to 5%. He said that the state govt had already brought the issue to the attention of the Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Kejriwal offers condolences to victims' family in Pune bridge collapse incident
New Delhi [India], June 15 (ANI): Former Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal expressed his 'deepest condolences' over the unfortunate bridge collapse incident near Talegaon of Maharashtra's Pune. 'This accident in Pune is very sad. My deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this accident. I wish for the speedy recovery of those injured in the accident,' Kejriwal posted on X. An old iron bridge over the Indrayani River near Kundamala village in Maharashtra's Pune district collapsed on Sunday afternoon, leaving at least four people dead and dozens injured, officials said. The incident prompted authorities to launch immediate search and rescue operations. According to the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), 39 people were rescued and four bodies recovered. 'A narrow bridge over the Indrayani River in Kundmala, Pune, collapsed. 35 people were rescued initially by local efforts. NDRF, in joint ops with civil administration, rescued 4 more alive & recovered 4 bodies. Rescue operations are ongoing,' the NDRF said in a post on X. The Maharashtra government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the families of those killed in the incident. 'CM Devendra Fadnavis has announced that the state government will provide financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the families of those who lost their lives in the bridge collapse incident on the Indrayani river near Talegaon in Pune district. Additionally, the state government will also bear the cost for the medical treatment of the injured,' the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said in a post on X. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently in Cyprus, spoke to CM Fadnavis to take stock of the ongoing rescue and relief operations. Maharashtra Minister Girish Mahajan, also at the scene, stated that the bridge collapsed due to excessive load as nearly 300 tourists stood on it despite prior warnings. 'The rescue operation is going on war footing. There is a possibility of the presence of a body under the debris... NDRF and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are all working to remove the debris... This narrow bridge was meant for the movement of the farmers, but 250-300 tourists stood on it, and the bridge collapsed due to excessive load... Entry was denied over here with boards erected, even police and locals warned about it,' Mahajan told ANI. Maharashtra Minister Makarand Patil also expressed these concerns and said several injured have been admitted to the civil hospital. 'Till now, injured people have been admitted to the (Civil) hospital... The rescue operation is going on in full swing. NDRF and SDRF have come here for the same, along with volunteering organisations and locals... This bridge was restricted for people and two-wheelers; however, due to excitement around monsoon tourism, many tourists gathered on despite restrictions,' Patil told ANI. Ludhiana (Punjab) [India], June 15 (ANI): Days ahead of Ludhiana West bypolls, BJP leader and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday slammed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), saying 'those who cheated and looted Delhi are today looting Punjab.' CM Gupta was campaigning for the BJP candidate, Jiwan Gupta, for the Ludhiana West bye-election scheduled for June 19. AAP has fielded sitting Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora from the seat, which fell vacant after the death of AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi. The counting is on June 23. Gupta stated, 'Those who cheated and looted Delhi are today looting Punjab. We will not let this happen. The people of Delhi have sent me to Ludhiana. I have come here to tell the people about all their (AAP) acts, all their stories of corruption.' Her remarks targeted AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, whom she earlier accused of causing spurious liquor deaths in Punjab and burdening the border state with a 'Rs 4 lakh crore debt.' Speaking to ANI, she also lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for ensuring Punjab's security through Operation Sindoor, while slamming the Congress for lacking patriotism. 'There was not a single Punjabi or Sikh minister in 10 years of your tenure in the Delhi government,' she said, and further alleged that AAP's Punjab government is controlled by non-locals like Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain. Meanwhile, AAP's Delhi President Saurabh Bhardwaj on Sunday asked Gupta to clarify if the BJP's new excise policy will privatise liquor shops or not? Bhardwaj, speaking to ANI, said, 'I have a direct question for her (CM Rekha Gupta). BJP objected to the Delhi Excise Policy and claimed that liquor shops had been privatised. Later, the policy was scrapped, and the shops became government-owned again. Rekha Gupta should clarify if she will privatise liquor shops under the new Excise Policy. This will reveal who is in collusion with the liquor mafia. She should answer this.' (ANI)
